Dileesa Hunter Do you think everyone can learn to sing or is it just for those born with the gift?
@smileymore25
@smileymore25 9 лет назад
Erica mercedez & Dileesa Hunter that's what I have always wanted to know. My daughter went to a vocal coach for 5 months and I didn't see any improvement in her singing so I stopped taking her. Now my niece is getting ready to go to someone for vocal coaching but I'm telling my sister if u don't see any improvement in a couple of months stop taking her and save your money. No one in our family is gifted in that area so I was wondering do u have to be born with it or can anyone be taught?
@Dileesa
@Dileesa 9 лет назад
SMILEYMORE Erica mercedez i think singing is like any other art whether it be drawing, doing hair, cooking, etc... some people are naturally better than others. Some people will always be bad singers no matter how much they are taught to do the right thing, Intuition a 'knowing' at some point has to kick in order to be successful. 3 months of vocal training with a good coach is enough time to know whether or not you have potential. If youre progressis painfully slow, (like you finally master opening your mouth or matching pitch after 4 lessons singing is NOT for you.
@pune37tAnG

I think most of the issues u have with her voice are actually style choices. I believe she knows how to sing the "correct way", but she decides to sing a different way to produce a unique sound.
@thatsoulkidbtj
@thatsoulkidbtj 6 лет назад
pune37tAnG no singer that is aware of improper singing technique actually does it for stylistic choices. They do it because it's stylistic first without realizing it will damage their voices later on because most popular singers did not grow up studying vocal pedagogy.

I like her sound better during the braxtons album and her first solo album. I think she tries to sound like toni on purpose. I think she idolizes toni so much and wants to sound like her Although she has a beautiful voice, im not a fan of it anymore. Much better in the 90s early 2000

Subscribed to your channel. I agreed with everything here. I do think Tamar lowers her larynx to give her lower register some depth and character. Darkening her timbre provides expression of the gloominess or sultriness she's trying to portray (signature Braxton sound I might add). A lot of times there is no right or wrong way of singing. Our voices are natural instruments that can be molded to convey a feeling and set the ambiance of the song, so it doesn't always have to be constant. It takes flexibility and control to switch up placements with expertise. Mariah is a prime example of this
@LauraLaurelsWorld
@LauraLaurelsWorld 10 лет назад
Aren't you supposed to keep a low larynx?
@theelpr5104
@theelpr5104 10 лет назад
Laura Laurelle You're supposed to keep a neutral larynx. You have to keep it in the middle/neutral so that you have ease with notes. People think moving it down helps with low notes and moving it up helps with high notes but it really makes them weaker and less resonant. And in the end, can cause extreme damage

No she's not. There's an internal opening to the throat regarding the "yawn" that's being missed here. She doesn't just "uhhhh" by itself. Mess around with how a wailing cry opens your stomach in what feels like a reversed fashion, which is what gives the brassy quality and opens up certain things like some closed-off/shrill head-notes . Basically she's crying her true feelings out...not shout-singing....all this while holding that "yawn" as if she's throwing up words/sound while wailing without it being for attention.

Great video Dileesa!! I love your videos as well as your gift!! You have an amazing talent & you use it beautifully! I agree with a lot of your points on Ms. Tamar as well! She most definitely does sound better in the higher part of her range. & she also does cheat the audience with her vocals! I guess she's trying to show off her control? SN: I can not wait for your full Beyonce voice analysis! I would like to know what you think about her vocal growth over the years because her voice has changed quite a bit! & if you'd like any special clips to watch before making your video on Beyoncé, I'd be more than happy to refer you to some great RU-vid ones I've found.

I noticed that too! She has an interesting cool, metallic, brassy sound. It's not particularly warm up there, if you get my meaning. She definitely mimics her famous older sister's style. I actually like it because it just gives that sensuality even though for Tamar it makes for a muddy, less clear sound that is artificially deeper and darker than it is

It is a matter of taste but in Tamar case, she is singing wrong. If I am not mistaken, Tamar said she did not want to sound like Toni. Toni has her own distinct style of singing. Tamar on the other hand does not. She need to find her voice. Sounding like Toni singing isn't it. Like Dileesa said in her analysis, it sound like Tamar voice want to come out but she compresses with singing from the back (like her sister) instead of the front (which is technically the correct way especially with the genre of music. Trina and Tracey doesn't sound like Toni at all - check out their singles. Tamar has a beautiful album. I like 85/90% of her songs on her album but when she sings live, I cringes. Dileesa should not sound better than Tamar live but she does. Tamar always have a hard time hitting her notes especially the high one. I am a bit surprise to know she is a soprano. I am not hatting on Tamar but her live performances reveals all of her singing issues. She does sound a little better but she has a long ways to go. Studio recording is much different then live performance. In studio recording they can get you to sound like anyone you want. I wish Tamar well. I have and LOVE her album. I hope she will consider hiring Dileesa as her vocal coach. No shade to whomever she has but Dieesa clearly know what she is talking about. Dieesa, what would be the first you do if you were Tamar's vocal coach? I would teach her how to breath correctly.

Um huge Tamar Fan and I can honestly say I learned a lot from watching this video. People are allowed to critique people and it not be considered them "coming for them" so please chill out. Dileesa this video is an incredible rave. I love it. You get right down to the nitty gritty. I do that stuff with my low notes too. Maybe Tamar would get great direction from you if she wanted to take you up on your vocal coaching offer to her too. I don't know about in her case but singers if they are self taught work intuitively and often aren't aware that it is possible for them to improve and replace habits that aren't in their best interests with different options. Seems to me you have a lot to say about this sort of stuff. I love your videos and you have an upfront personality that makes you a lot of fun!!
@TeeCG
@TeeCG 10 лет назад
I agree with you about Tamar...very talented but she tends to want to "show off" as opposed to really connecting with the emotion her songs are supposed to convey, I love your videos and would love you to do a video discussing Toni Braxton’s voice. I just think her voice is so uniquely special; both she and Anita Baker have those airy, ethereal voices that I could listen to all day. So often we over celebrate Soprano voices and many think that if you can sing high, that means you can sing better than those that sing lower; many don’t understand or see the skill that it takes to sing in the lower register. I’m not a vocalist but I am a lover of music (damn near all genres) and a huge fan of distinct lower voices (Toni Braxton, Anita Baker, Sade, Phyllis Hyman, Brandy, etc.). I don’t know if you are a fan of Toni’s or have really analyzed her voice but there are some videos on youtube that actually showcase her FULL range very well; many just think she can sing low and have no idea just how dynamic her voice is. See “Toni Braxton Live Vocal Range: A2-C6” and “Toni Braxton Vocal Showcase: D3-Bb5 (Seven Whole Days Live).” Also see “Shadowless (acoustic in AOL Sessions) - Toni Braxton” which really shows how technically skilled she is…amazing control. Please check these out when you get a chance and keep up the good work

To be honest I have never really listened to her. I was aware that she was related to Toni Braxton and apparently she was on the reality series as well. The few times I have heard her she did remind me of Toni for sure! Your video makes me want to go check her out further. Thank you for your professional opinion on what makes her voice shine and what also might be holding her back. As a singer my self its call vocal contortions ti give difrrent textures and tones. Its some what like what Tata vega does. I know plenty singers like brandy for one that use their lower register and use it correctly. In my opinion its just the soundvof her tone at thus lower register. Toni braxton use of her voice is flawless and she is a very skilled singer and that's just her tone. It doesn't sound like the back of the throat to me. Every body tones are diffrent and just because their nit light and bright tones doesnr mean they singing incorectly

Hm. I definitely wouldn't describe Tamar's voice as "light and bright" category. I think that she has a warm soprano tone. Her lower register is husky imitating her older sister's Tenor and her upper register can be shrill, nearly weak as we've heard in "Love and War" (particularly the 3rd verse on the "weeeeee" part), especially when she explores those big notes in full voice, it's almost like she's pushing past her range. And you neglected to talk about how she misplaces runs. Without a doubt, she's a solid singer, her album recordings display her gift. She's coming to my hometown of Chicago in June and I plan on seeing her live. I'll come back to the video with a full synopsis of my experience. Love you, Dilessa!

Tamar's voice is definitely bright. The "shrillness" you're talking about in that part of Love and War, for instance, isn't so much shrillness as it is brightness. The higher up a soprano goes, the more of that bell-like sound they'll have. Like Dileesa said, Tamar's voice blossoms as she ascends into the soprano tessitura. That sustained Love and War note is an F#5, well into the tessitura of a skilled soprano like Tamar. Any shrillness you might hear is really more a result of the fact that her voice is relatively small and she's at her volume limit. Any smaller voice (it's called a lyrical voice) will distort once it starts to reach the upper bound of its volume. She's actually got one of the brightest voices around right now... haha. Generally the lighter the voice, the brighter the tone.

i definitely think its light and bright. she tries to make it husky and dark but its not. I don't think she misplaces runs at all!LOL I can't wait to hear your analysis of the concert. Thanks for watching!!

I know nothing about vocals but that light bright feel is what made me a fan. She sounds best when she doesn't try...rehearsals and singing with her sisters. That's where her voice really shines and feels weightless. And Tamar knows exactly how to place her vocals in a song. That's one of the things I love about her. Perfect example is her duet with Robin Thicke. She turned a beautiful but dull song into a fuckin masterpiece. Her live performances on the other hand...smh

Since she was Toni’s back up singer for so many years, she seems to wield the same brand of sensuality and vocal tics her older sister is famous for (breathy, hollow, muddled). Not only that, Tamar’s much lighter, ringing, metallic Soprano voice is also reminiscent of Mariah Carey’s in her belts…. unlike Carey's slight warm brassy tone, Tamar has an intense, cold metallic sound at the top of her voice

Awesome video Dileesa!! I think the only thing that actually bothers me about Tamar is her pitch issues, she doesn't seem to focus on that. However, when she does focus on her pitch, she slays.

I think you are spot on in describing Tamar's singing style. And I have to agree with you when you say her voice sometimes lacks continuity. That for me is my biggest problem with her. As much as I love her and think she is a brilliant singer, the lack of consistancy throughout the song makes me feel like she doesn't give the full package. Otherwise I love her music very much and am proud of where she has gotten herself thus far.
