+goatstaog Easy for you to say. Your not a hugely influential youtube user... Being who he is and how many people trust him he should have at least joined the wires together properly before soldering them. I did plenty of soldering in high school and I'll agree this was a sloppy job. So many people will now use this as a reference when anyone who knows how to solder correctly would cringe watching it.. I am a long time subscriber of Scotty. This video doesn't show his talent. He must have had a case of the Mondays making this video.

We solder differently now. We no longer twist/intertwine the wires together but put them side by side and have another single wire to wrap around the two wires you're binding together , then solder it. We usually hold the solder iron below the wires while holding the soldering wire above the wires and let it seep through. Always remember to put the heat shrink over one of the wires before soldering.

I did this for an O/D off switch in my Ford. The wire that runs through the column shifter and into a proprietary connector in the steering column snapped loose from excessive wear, and I was able to pull the pins from the connector and run new wire through the system. I'm so glad I did this, because I know Ford would have wanted me to buy a whole new shifter with a new O/D off button on the end; for a lot of cash, and I wasn't about to do that. It's definitely worth your time to learn how to fix your own vehicles, and it's also very rewarding!

All those sharp ends you left sticking out will poke through that eventually.Wrap the wire as you did, but make sure all the ends are wrapped nice and tight. Bigger is not better as you said, but a flat tip of equivalent size is better. I use a chisel tip to work on surface mount boards! They hold more heat, and just do a better job than the conical tip.
@timramich
@timramich 8 лет назад
+goatstaog Nah, not really. I tin my wires first, then trim them a little (so no sharp ends), then fold them bend them into a U, put them together so they can't pull apart, and then smash both U's as small as they will go with needle dick pliers, then solder those together, and then I heat shrink them (with heat shrink added before the wires are put together, of course). The way he did it is kinda sloppy. You have no idea if the solder has absorbed all the way in and if the rosin cleaned all of the wire. Tinning is a must, unless you're just trying to flip a car quickly and cheaply.

I agree on the sharp ends being smoothed out, definitely will look more professional. However, I have left sharp ends sticking out many a times and have never had them poke through heat shrink tubing. They only way I can see that happening is one either uses very thin (cheap?) heat shrink, which is unheard of for me, or one's aggressively manhandling that area.

Protip: Also, spend a few bucks (literally) and get yourself the Helping Hands from Harbor Freight. It has a nicely-weighted base, magnifying glass, and two alligator clips to hold your wiring if you have unsteady hands. It keeps your wiring nice and steady so you can use both hands to operate the soldering pen and the solder. I went to school for Electronics and PC Tech before I had to learn about car repair as a necessity (and now a passion), and I've had a similar one without the magnifying glass for 18 years. So I can say from experience it is a very handy tool, that you can also use it to glue broken trim (without gluing your fingers together) and, for hobbyists, it's also great for detailed painting of small parts!

I remember I thought I had to tear apart parking light wire and solder things on my Tacoma because the light would always flicker and eventually won't stay on. I can take the parking light assembly out, and the light would flicker or stay on depending on how I move it around in my hand. It was eventually I found out that the bulb had these metal leaves that bend out to make contact with the assembly, but were not bent out enough to make contact. That was a fix right there that had me so relieved, and allowed me to leave the wiring alone.

AS long as the solder flows completely. You must "tin" or apply solder to tip and hold and heat up wire then apply solder to wire until in flows. Never sand tip, but clean every time with a wet sponge. A proper solder connection is the best over butt connectors, wire nuts...

Hey scotty i took your advice and fixed my vacuum leak (i think). Can you believe that changing out my exhaust manifold gaskets not only cleared up my stalling issue but also now my exhaust isnt leaking water like a sieve. I used to always have 3 puddles of water under the car from the exhaust and grey smoke out of tailpipe. Now there is ZERO water and no smelly or smoky exhaust. Doesnt make sense to me but i'll take it. Thank you. Now, on my scanner i have a Case Ground reading of -.15. I know thats high. My engine block ground strap was hooked to a firewall screw that had a rubber bushing on it. Bought new strap and hooked it over the the green ford screw that signifies GROUND. The PCM is also grounded up to this green bolt. The only ground i havent messed with is the ground from my battery terminal to the front of the rig. I have a feeling that that terminal ground isnt the "CASE GROUND". My reading from negative terminal to the case of the alternator on my multimeter is .09-.10. I know thats high as well so i'm wondering where could the issue be? Everything is grounded where it should be. Should i replace the ground from the PCM to firewall or Terminal to frame? Thanks for all the great info Scotty. You've saved me tons of money and taught me to be a problem solver and not a parts changer.

actually a good soldering tutorial if you only want to do wires. it doesn't matter if it's ugly as long as the connection is solid. could have gone one step further by adding electrical tape to protect from pokey bits. you can also use a propane torch or butane torch lighter for shrinkwrap, bics are not very good though.

I highly recommend Raychem "Duraseal" heat-shrink crimp splices, available at the orange home improvement store. Use them with a ratcheting crimper and shrink them with a heat gun. They're lined with adhesive that will flow and seal the joint. I've had better experience with crimps than soldered connections in environments subject to lots of vibration. Watch the heat with the Duraseals, because the shrink temperature is fairly close to the melting point of typical PVC insulation.
@KompulsaOfficial
@KompulsaOfficial 5 лет назад
That joint turned out good, but it is easier (and is more likely to yield a good result) if the wire is coated with flux first. The solder will flow between the strands of wire very quickly and easily. 🙂

When getting a soldering iron only get chisel tip because you can do both thick wires with the flat end and thin wires with the sharper end. Also with that kind of thick wire you are soldering you should soak the copper wire with flux then you drag and drop solder to the wire and make sure you keep adding more flux once the solder stops flowing into the wires

+doublewide6 "Rosin core" solder is actually a hollow tin shell filled with flux in the center. That's why it's important to touch the solder to the wire and not the iron, because otherwise the flux won't touch the wire before burning off.

Well, it beats "twist-n-tape" but the wire work hardens from vibration where the solder ends. So a soldered connection in a car should always be hard mounted, fixed, attached to something so it can't vibrate and work harden and fail. That's why crimp connectors are normally used--not splicing. With a good ratcheting crimper, not the "tool and 500 crimps for $5!" crap, it will be quicker and more reliable than solder.

+Cody Davis technically speaking waterproof butt connectors are considered the best way to make a splice on the engine itself, because of vibration issues, although I have literally never had one of my side by side solder splices fail and I use them on the engine, too. Anywhere else you should use a normal solder joint, with waterproof heat shrink tubing.

Martin Espinoza yeah all my connections are under the hood. for my tail light hook ups i used water proof plugs. i have some wiring inside with butt splices. for radio, speakers, seat belt plug, oem gauges etc didn't put no contact grease on them. they're all tucked under the dash, not worried about corrosion, because things like that need replaced and upgraded every couple of years anyway

@brianpiper3188
@brianpiper3188 8 лет назад
+4UIncognito Here's my advice: 1 Check all grounds. Tracing from the battery, there is typically one to the engine and one to the body (rubber body mounts prevent solid contact between the two). The one to the engine could be your cranking issue. Check for misc. ground points near fuse boxes and computers, that could be your door lock issue (was for me in my 05 Chevy Colorado). 2 Check the battery terminals (you had the battery tested). 3 Have the starter and alternator tested. The starter could be worn out and the alternator might not be supplying sufficient voltage. Hope this helps!

My brother in law's Ford ranger had oil drip on the wiring harness right where all the wires connect and plug into the ECU, it melted the wires together and shorted them all out, so I had to take and carefully splice them all apart, put shrink tube on each wire that was exposed, then rebundle it up. And then he hydrolocked the damn thing a month later. Apparently he thought it was more important to save $20 in coolant and just put water in his radiator, ate out his head gasket. Sad story. Well... maybe sad, but I was definitely pissed lol.

Scotty - If you have an Optima Yellow Top "Deep Cell" Battery which is 3-4yrs old and the first cold morning you come out to start the car it doesnt do anything except "Click" So You replace it with another new YellowTop and everything is fine and dandy for a week. Then Your new battery is fried and dead with only 5V, just for the hell of it you test old Batt and the sucker says 12.4V so you put in your OLD battery and it starts and runs everything FINE then dies again a few weeks later, so you buy a 3rd Battery, now in vehicle for 2 days. Is It possible for these type of Batteries to Self Charge in freezing envoirments sitting in the back of a Chevy Express Van? They arent leaning against the metal side of Van touching terminals or anything like that.

Hi Scotty, my jeep patriot 2011 vibrates a lot (and make noise) when it doesn't move in drive. However, when I put into neutral or park, vibration disappear. Increasing rpm also stops the vibration. Do you know how to solve this problem?
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 8 лет назад
+Zhejun Zhang transmission is going out, typical on those. That or the torque converter inside the transmission has gone bad. Of course check the fluid to see if it's just low if you have leaks

@frenchcanadianbastard9998
@frenchcanadianbastard9998 8 лет назад
+DJ WEZ WALLY You can check if you need to change it really easily, sometime the bearing is loose and sometime it's loud, on a loud bearing the wheel can lock and on a loose bearing you can lose the wheel while driving, on a loose bearing the wheel will be loose and on a loud bearing you can hear it while driving

@scottykilmer

+Jorge Hidalgo pray it's a bad o ring, remove the dist and replace that ring on the base. IF not that, but inside seal and inside of dist is also oily, you have to replace the whole dist

I'll pray it's not that, cause that dist is basically new (the old one had a terrible oily problem inside) TY!

Hello, Scotty, I recently changed the radiator in my 2009 Subaru forester. Lot's of transmission oil went out of it what is the best way to check the transmission fluid while the tranny is hot or while it's cold ? On the dipstick on the transmission there is 2 different measuring scales one for warm and one for cold, also what is a good transmission fluid brand, This is an AWD car and it needs some tranny fluid thanks !

Is it better to use a thicker gauge wire than the recommended?
@timramich
@timramich 8 лет назад
+Corpse Flogger It's pointless, as the rest of the wire will still be a smaller size and be the bottleneck. Car wiring is generally too thin. The manufacturers put just thick enough wire in to not be a safety hazard, but anyone can tell that the wiring is too thin when they see other lights dim when the turn signals are on.
@corpseflogger5296
@corpseflogger5296 8 лет назад
Tim Ramich Sorry I meant in the context of full replacement of the wire.
@timramich
@timramich 8 лет назад
+Corpse Flogger If you replace the ENTIRE wire, from one connector to the other, meaning pulling the terminals and either crimping new ones or kinda un-crimping a terminal and soldering new wire to it.
@timramich
@timramich 8 лет назад
I don't care for thinner solder for car wiring. For automotive wiring I use a 100-watt soldering gun (a triggered gun, not a pencil iron), and 0.062" 60/40 rosin-core solder. If you're working with nice pure copper, then I'd say go for the thinner stuff, but that is rarely the case in a car that needs wiring fixed. The thicker stuff and hotter gun gets the wire clean from the rosin (flux).

I got a question Scotty if u see this or anyone else out their if you got some advice that'd be great. was going to replace the fan belt and serpentine belt and timing belt on my 92 Mazda protege 1.8l 16 valve SOHC. theirs 4 small bolts around the big bolt that turns the engine over on the harmonic balancer and they are all 100% completely stripped. the heads of them are basically circles. I'm going to end up buying new bolts when I put it all back together but I need to get the old ones out first. any advice? I know they sell kits to remove stripped screws but I watched some videos and it seems like all of them are just for carpentry type screws that u use a screw driver for. I did spray the bolts with some anti-seize spray and I'll try again tomorrow but. they're super stripped it's hard to even get a hold of them with a vice grip.

@helivesonforever
@helivesonforever 8 лет назад
Yeldarb Q You don't need a gauge to do a rough check. Get a screwdriver and push in on the little nipple with the cap off. Fuel should spray out, if it doesn't, then you have a problem with the fuel system behind the engine. Do you hear the fuel pump whine for a second or two when you turn the key on? If not, you have an issue with the fuel pump, probably a wiring issue or ground issue. You can "rent" a gauge set at any auto parts store. You pay the price to buy it, but when you return it you get all that money back. They're like 20 bucks I believe. Either way, you get it all back.

I'm actually dealing with some wiring issues in my Jeep. Its causing my radiator fan to not kick on, paid a friend of mine who owns a shop $75 on two occasions to fix it, both only lasted maybe 2 days so now I'm broke and don't know what to do or even where to start
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 8 лет назад
+Dpa SFT check the coolant temperature sensor that turns the fan on first, and the wiring that runs off that. If not that, often a bad main computer, in which case you can wire the fans to run off a toggle switch you can easily turn on yourself to run the fans and bypass all that computer crap
@Dapsters
@Dapsters 8 лет назад
+Scotty Kilmer thanks for the reply Scotty, would you be able to do a video or recommend one that is good for bypassing the computer stuff? like the video, but the soldering was horrible. when I need to solder wires. I dont twist them at all. Just put tin on both wires, then hold the wires together (180degrees) and use the iron to melt the sides. Will never break and a much tidier job than the twisters.

Several issues, 1. Learn to properly solder. 2. That heat shrink will let moisture inside. Always use a heatshrink that has a glue inside to make the connection water tight.

You won't have to worry about fixing any wiring yet, but just to be sure does it only do it when the engine is fully warmed up and just idling? If so, that's because of the lower speed the engine is running at and it's totally normal to see a car sometimes do that.

What causes wires to go bad? Do they rust / break apart from age?
@TheServano
@TheServano 8 лет назад
+Terrence Gold Ususally wires will stay good for a longggg time as they are insulated from the elements and such. WIres typically go bad when they either rub the insulation off, ground out, or have too many amps going through causing them to melt. However, Fuses typically prevent that as they will melt at a lower amperage then the wires.
