How to Sound Like Slaughter of the Soul

Trying to get the guitar tone (and the whole mix) from At the Gates' Slaughter of the Sould in this Blinded by Fear cover using the information they've given us on how it was recorded. I think I got pretty close, though it wasn't easy! At the heart of the guitar sound is a Metal Zone boosted by an HM-2 into a clean solid state amplifier, hardly what anyone would recommend, but the success of the album speaks for itself, and certainly not despite the production.
Here are the important plugins I used in this:

This was a fun challenge, and not easy to try to get this to sound like the original album. How do I do?

I think you'd love the amptweaker deathpedal, so close to their tone.

Very cool run through! You are right with your conclusion, I would argue that everyone involved in recording this album couldn't recreate it %100 sound wise. Which is all apart of the beauty of each project sounding different and unique.

It would be very difficult, probably impossible, especially when it was all done analog, it's not like they can just open it up in their DAW and see where everything was set.

Sounds really close!! Thank you for doing your homework! Of all the people on youtube that demo the HM2 never use it as a "clean boost" for either an amp or a metalzone. That I think is a severely missing component of this pedal that people miss too often. I love ATG's version of the chainsaw tone.

Thanks, I agree it's a cool and unusual use. I wouldn't have thought to try it if not for them!

@@NickLeonard I think when they eventually "graduated" to tube amps, they'll use the HM2 to boost their 5150s.
@NickLeonard
@NickLeonard 2 года назад
I was just doing that for an upcoming HM-2 shootout, though I was just running the AHM5050 sim on the overdrive channel. Works great for a big chainsaw sound, but I'll have to try running it high gain with the HM-2 as a boost

Great job, especially with doing every instrument (I was only expecting the guitars). Yeah, my ReaEQ looks pretty funky too...lol. It is taking me some getting used to, since Reaper doesn't have Bass, Mid, Treble on their Mixer (that really screwed me up at first but the ReaEQ does give you more control, once you get the hang of it. Once again, great video.

I have lots of EQs, but I use ReaEQ for most things put of habit, and it's a great tool. Once they added resizing, it got even better. There are some free 3-band or semi-parametric EQs out there too

Very interesting. As far as I remember, from the pictures, one of the pedals was in the loop (I think it was the MT-2). Maybe you could try to place it after the amp?
@NickLeonard
@NickLeonard 3 года назад
I hadn't heard ATG talk about that, but you could be right. It works either way, though you need to set the pedal a little differently after the amp, the top end is smoother running after the amp. Ever since Ola talked about using it in the fx loop, everyone is, though in '95 I'm not sure anyone was using it that way. Cheers!

I use a cheap compressor BEFORE a metal zone, instead of in post, and I have it cranked to really boost it. I also don't run it in front of my amp, I just use the Metal Zone as the pre amp.
@NickLeonard
@NickLeonard 2 года назад
that's a cool idea, sometimes I like a compressor on high gain tones, though it can introduce more noise too. Ever since Ola figured out the metalzone preamp trick, everyone uses it that way, but there's no real evidence of it being used like that until a few years ago. Boss themselves said they designed it to go in front of an amp. I do agree it's better as a preamp, and you can do that in the box either without a power amp or with something like the Ignite TPA power amp sim. I've tried that and it works well, though it's not how Slaughter of the Soul was done!

Great video! Also, as a fellow Marylander, stoked to see the MD flag in a video I clicked on ATG guitar tone. I would love to see a similar video on Bloodbath's guitar tone from 'The Fathomless Mastery' as I can't seem to find much definative info on how they achieved it.

GIRUGAMESH! \m/ I don't know what they used on that, might be able to find out, but I know they use HM-2's or similar. Sounds like a blend between an HM-2 and a tube amp, nice percussive attack though. It's got that chainsaw sound but pretty clean.

@@NickLeonard Combing back to this, after doing more reasearch. There is less information available about the guitar tone on that album than there was 5-6 years ago when I initially started researching. A lot of forum posts deleted or just gone from the net. Anywho keep up the vids! Just watched the one about scale length and remembered this video/comment hah!

I have an EMG 81 and the final result wasn't like yours at all. Had to do several tweaks but eventually got it sounding great. I noticed the guitar at the beginning of Slaughter of the Soul is mixed differently than the rest of the album. The panning is more centered, but also the tone is quite different. Any tips on how to achieve that?
@NickLeonard
@NickLeonard 2 года назад
I'm using passive pickups, and yes, different pickups will have a different tone (eq) and gain, so you would have to adjust those. Mostly tweaking the metal zone or amp eq. For the start of that song, it's just the left guitar panned 100%. It doesn't sound like a really different tone to me. I'd bet it's the same, but when the right guitar and bass come in, it sounds way different. If it is a pedal change, it could be having the HM-2 off, but I don't hear a big eq shift like that would do.

Honestly if you got a guitar with EMG's you'd get it that it that much closer, it'll give it that compressed/pushed sound that they got on SOTS , or black album

If my records are correct, at this time it was a .66 on the low A, and the rest are ultra slinky 10-48 It's a 26.5" scale length, usually in drop A, but raised to B standard for this song.
