In the world of boxing, sparring should be a playful yet focused experience, where participants can grow and learn without feeling threatened. It's all about creating an environment where the "fight or flight" instincts are not triggered, and instead, encouraging a state of flow where learning can take place. By maintaining a light and playful atmosphere, sparring becomes a collaborative effort to improve, rather than a high-stakes situation where fear is the driving force. Our video will showcase the importance of this mindset, providing a clear example of how sparring should be conducted to nurture growth and skill development. Get ready to join us on The Sweet Science for an insightful and empowering journey into the world of beginner sparring!

Great to see a sensible approach to sparring being promoted, I really liked the encouragement and feedback during and inbetween rounds. Sammy did extremely well, not only was it his first spar but he also being filmed for a RU-vid upload, well done!

Im all agree with you, light sparring is the best way to learn. One have to be relaxed to learn the correct moves, in hard sparring you became stiff and most part of the fight you think how to not get injured and to inflict as much damage as you can to your opponent, so the technical side became obsolete. Congrats to the kid, he has done good. I dont think that once per week you should do hard sparring, maybe before a competition or real match, but even so with maximum care to injures and with same level partners.

Glad you agree with me my friend , yeah leave your hard sparring for only when it’s necessary, really appreciate your comment brother 👍🥊

This was great to watch, he did really well and you're right you learn more this way. I can see so much of myself in Sammy's performance there (other than I'm 40!) - he looked tense relative to you, and I'm also shorter than a lot of the people I partner with, so I get the frustration of trying to outbox people who have a big reach advantage, and what you learn on the pads is harder to recall against a live opponent. You had some good tips for him though. Good job both.

Thank you brother I appreciate your comment yeah Sammy done really well , I’m pleased he’s been patient about his training and took the time to learn his footwork , fundamentals etc before he wanted to get into sparring , I’m quite proud of him 👍🥊

I think at least 1 time every 2 weeks you should hard spar to get a real feeling of the fight (off fight camps). Tips for the boy: as the coach said move the waist to get close + i would say try to execute different combos and also try sometimes to counter. Try to lead with left hook or directly with right cross (for exemple) and build a combo of 3-4 shots, wait your coach to start attack and try to counter. Also try to add feints! Good job both keep going ;)

Thanks brother glad you enjoyed the video, was fun making it and fun sparring with Sammy, even though medically I’m not suppose to get punched in the head anymore, another reason why I’m an advocate for light playful sparring 👍🥊

I was really surprised how competent this kid looked at his first sparring practice. The reason being that he had prepared for a year prior and probably had practiced at home. The old way of learning was to get brain damage for a year just to prove how tough we all were and er! Stupid😅

Completely agree with you, he has spent over a year with me learning his fundamentals, learning his footwork, learning to slip punches , roll punches , we’ve done controlled partner drills , I never push anyone into sparring I let them choose, and yes the old way was to prove how tough you were, there’s so much to learn though isn’t there, I’d rather them learn their skills first before they start sparring my friend 👍🥊

Yeah, he looked great in there, and really good to see you talking him through it and giving him deliberate patterns to pick up on. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no expert but this to me is a great session 👍🏻

@richardaustin1887 to be honest I was very happy with how it went for him, he was a bit nervous, even more so that we filmed it as well, I’m looking forward to seeing how does once he’s completely relaxed 👍🥊
