I have been saying I am ready to learn Krio, so in today's vlog we see if I can learn some basic Krio words and phrases. And as always it was hilarious! Let me know what you think~
Krio is an English-based creole language that is lingua franca and de facto national language spoken throughout the West African nation of Sierra Leone.
Krio is spoken by 96 percent of the country's population, and it unites the different ethnic groups in the country, especially in their trade and social interaction with each other.
Krio is the primary language of communication among Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad,[ and has also heavily influenced Sierra Leonean English.
Krio is native to the Creoles who are freed slaves from Britain, The United States and West Indies. It is mainly derived from English but has influences from other African languages (Yuroba for example), European languages (such as French) and also contains some expressions found in the West Indies.
As of May 23 2022, Krio is now on Google Translate. Check it out - translate.google.com/?hl=en&s...

NOTE: The writing system used here is the recommended orthography used in schools and colleges in Sierra Leone. The orthography uses phonetic symbols for some vowel sounds in krio.
An important thing to note is that each symbol represents ONE and only ONE sound, and each sound is represented by only ONE symbol. The vowel sounds are usually the problem. Below is a guide to the pronunciation of the vowels of Krio.
1. ɛ as in English ‘bed.’
2. e as in English ‘day’
3. ɔ as in English ‘cot’
4. ʌ as in English ‘cut’ (not found in Krio)
5. ə as in English ‘ among’ (not found in Krio)
6. o as in English ‘bowl’ or ‘boat’
7. u as in English ‘fool’
8. I as in English ‘seat’

The guy is right. Pan is a krio word translated in English as 'on' which was brought over by the Maroons from Jamaica. The only issue with it is that non- native krio speakers (the other tribes) use it wrongly. Some pan expressions include 'Amos pan dem? (how many of them?)'. Timap pan dem (stand on them) Put am pan me back (put it on my back). Wetin yo dae pan? (what are you up to)? As we can see, pan is clearly a Krio word brought over from the Caribbean by the Maroons. However, it must be used correctly.

Suggestion: can you do a video comparing Gullah and krio? Gullah (South Carolina -African American language) it’s similar to krio as the Gullah ppl went to Canada and then came to Freetown in the 1700s bringing over the language. Krio has some Gullah words. There was a girl in Sierra Leone who took an ancestry dna and was confused why it said 6% Native American Indian and listed South Carolina community. Many Sierra Leone’s don’t realize they are part Gullah.

English is the official official recognized language and yet a lot of us cannot speak it. It is sad. If we are going with Krio, which nearly everyone seems to know, then we need to standardize the grammar, spelling etc.
@AuthenticAfrican
@AuthenticAfrican Год назад
You are right. It should be this way but everyone in the world does need to know english. It is the international language of business. It all starts in the schools and at home....Krio is standardized and taught in school, but people dont remember it and apply it in everyday live.
@iTuber012
@iTuber012 Год назад
@@AuthenticAfrican honestly in the provinces, kids should be taught in their local language and have English as a class within that school to build their English skills over time. So if in Bo, they should be taught in Mende, Mende should be standardized, grammar standardized etc and the non Latin alphabet for it adopted and used. The Mende alphabet is called kikakyu I believe. Repeat this in Makeni with Temne etc etc in each province. Once they reach middle school, instruction should switch to English. I honestly don't see why Krio is the standard language. It is strange when it has no official legal recognition by the government Private non government funded schools can do as they please obviously
