the upbringing of girls has to change because everything starts in childhood. whenever I tried to have boundaries as a girl, to defend myself, to argue, my parents stopped me and that killed all the self-esteem in me. I'm working on it , but as a teenager I couldn't stand up to anyone at all even when I was in the right. Just a good little girl. If I'd had what you had, I'd have ended up in an airport bathroom crying because the guy was mean to me. We have a lot to learn.

I remember when I was about 12 and a little girl who was around 4-6 would literally bully me and belittle me and all I could do is cry, and since I’m getting older people are getting meaner it’s hard to defend yourself when u can’t even clap back a little girl for making fun of u.

I feel you,my family is also very toxic, I was taught to be silent whenever someone older than me insult me,...or even hit, punch me, I never have the right to stand up or else I will get judge and harrash even more. That destroys me, until now I still have to suffer.

Exactly, people are always like, "don't take it so personally, chill out" but proceed to make everything so personal and disrespectful. Well I won't take it no matter who you are. I'm the type of person who would NEVER put others down or disrespect them without a reason. I just don't care. You know why? Because I was that person to always let go, say nevermind, understand others' frustrations and stupid comments, but hell no, I'm no more that stupid. People just love to take any kind of advantage of you and your personal space as well as boundaries, or lack of them. Not anymore. It takes guts to be a genuine and respectful person, and once you cross the line with me, you'll lose my respect for you because if I don't respect myself, who will?
@simranshehzadi9430
@simranshehzadi9430 8 месяцев назад
Reading the comments made me realize I'm not alone and there are people out there who are working on themselves, failing then trying again and never giving up... also people thinking I'm short tempered when I stand up for myself? people thinking I'm a crybaby when I'm unable to stand up for myself and have a breakdown instead? it gives me courage and motivates me to keep going especially after knowing that I'm not the only one facing these issues as nobody really talks about it irl. Y'all inspire me

I had a boyfriend who didn't see our relationship as... a relationship. He told a friend of mine who he wanted to cheat on me with (it didn't work out, she told me immediately afterwards) that we were just "smash buddies", and he was never clear to me that that was all he wanted from me, probably because he knew I'd refuse that idea. After breaking up with him he came to me like 4 days after, having the audacity to play dumb about everything, and when I told him what he did, HE ACTED PISSED because he was played just as well as he was trying to play me. We were friends before all this, and he came to me today asking to go back to that. I basically said, "No way, bastard, you're delirious."

I had to cut out so many toxic people from my life because they didn't respect me or my boundaries. I used to think something was wrong with me for the amount of people I've had these situations with especially within close amount of time. I'm now here with much more healthier friendships & relationships around me and currently healing from my past trauma from the past toxic relationships. Thank you for sharing this as it generally helps

@tarasdiary
@tarasdiary 11 месяцев назад
@DazedDomino Honestly it depended on the situation with each person, some I just literally cut off without a word because of a build up & then they pull another thing that made me done and I no longer have the energy to try talk it out with them. I wouldn't cut someone off without attempting to try talk stuff out first, but if it came to the point where it's literally not working and they keep disprecting me & my boundaries I was out just like that. I've had rare situations where I literally told the person to have a good life and goodbye then I just cut off after that, I haven't got time for arguing with someone who choose to not listen multiple times. I generally had a lot of love & care for these people and put my full 100% in, so having to cut them off was a hard choice but was the best thing for me to move on and have room for better people who generally appreciate me and the relationships are both ways & not one sided. I'm not perfect either, I can make mistakes, but I generally do admit when I do make them and have always apologised to the other party for them - I just never get an apology back sadly.

perfect timing. i had to stand up for myself today in a situation where i was totally being disrespected for a month. i said how i felt, and cut that situation out of my life. but i have been feeling anxious and guilty about it all day! for literally standing up for myself like what!?!?! anyways, this really reassured me that i made the right choice, even though i'm used to being the 'nice person and people pleaser' all the time. thank you!!

You will continue to feel anxious about this, every time you do it, until you get to the point where your brain/ego stops shooting the negative hormones through your system. It has been trained to behave one way over a lifetime, and it's your responsibility to fight this battle with it. But do it nicely: "brain, thank you for trying to protect me, I'm going to be okay though and this is the right thing to do.

I was having a bad day today, I just cried, and I started typing, "how to stand up for yourself & set boundaries". Earlier this day, this neighbor, despite having 9 kids, couldn't keep his hands out of my business and started insulting me about the income I make while working from home. In many situations in life, because I was brought up in a way that my parents would just shut me down whenever i try to explain myself, later in life, whenever someone is being rude to me, I literally get stunned. Afterwards, it makes me feel really bad that I'm not able to clapback. And that's exactly what happened earlier. This video of yours is a blessing. I just subscribed. These words were very powerful: "You don't have to like yourself in order to be deserving of respect." Thank you, Simone. I've always hated myself too because of my weight, and that adds up to my lack fo self-esteem and confidence.
@b.k.701
@b.k.701 3 месяца назад
Your weight is not the defining trait of your character. I'm certain you can make a list of things you do like about yourself if you gave yourself the chance to do so. The fact that your boundaries were violated and your reaction was to look up how to set them effectively rather than giving in to hopelessness already shows me one item on that list. Also, he insulted you about your income? That's rude as heck. Some people really never learned any manners. Sorry your neighbor sucks.

i am the same way, i never react to a situation immediately because im worried that i might be the one who has to change something instead of someone else, and because of this i always sit on it and think about whether its a me problem or a them problem, and then if i realize its not me then i feel like its too late to bring it up again. if you find a solution to this please let me know :')

me too and as simone said, i think it’s because we don’t like ourselves. your perception is just as important as any other’s. so if you felt disrespected, you have all rights to react to it, and maybe the person will explain it wasn’t their intention and will apologize :)

Idk if this will help someone, but sth I've noticed, also by listening to these tipps is: Imagine someone is getting affected and hurted because of u not standing up. I guarantee u won't be able to be silent for too long. Imagine u had to defend a little kid when u want to defend urself. Just imagine this. It's so powerful. Like for me these mother bear instincts just kick right in and I just get this attitude of: get out of my f* way. Hope that helped, loved the video ^^

Thank you so much. I wish I had known you earlier. Watching this video reminds me of every single time I have let things go and not stand up for myself. People you don't realise how important it is to do that. When I last stood up for myself I was being called dramatic. I questioned about it every single time and I was dumbfounded but now I can think clearly how much had I allowed people to treat myself poorly. Please stand up for yourself it's not dramatic it's necessary.

You won't believe this but I think universe is sending me signs. There was a guy who I always helped even though it meant putting myself at inconvenience. No matter how bad the situation is I still try my best to help others even though they don't help me enough. I trusted and supported him when everyone was against him. Irrespective of all this, he would show his entitlement and not value my efforts and be a lil bitch. Long story short, it was just this morning that I confronted him and said that I'm not going to help him anymore by compromising on things I'd do for myself. I'd do wonders if I put even half the effort on myself. I've had enough of his entitled-ness and need to step up my game. After saying all this to him, after a while I felt bad for being rude, but that's right when this video got uploaded! Now I know I did the right thing! Universe definitely sending me signs!

I'm really glad you included "pick your battles" as part of the decision making in conflict resolution (which encompasses this topic). Especially if you're a woman bringing up conflict to a man, make sure you're safe before you bring up the conflicts. I don't blame women for being extra cautious around men. If I was in your shoes, I'd be scared too. Its 100% reasonable and you have to adapt to the situation and the current state of the world.

FINALLY! A fellow clapback queen. I was feeling bad for being so quick to shut shit down, like maybe I'm an overly angry person. It's made people I'm hanging out with at the time uncomfortable in the past. I had to have an internal conversation with myself that their discomfort is their problem. I'm allowed to stand up for myself. More recently, I've had coworkers and friends pull me aside and thank me for saying what they were too nervous to say. I just try to be mindful of who's a jerk and who's going through something and acting out of character, but otherwise, I'm golden.

Society thinks that we're mean and heartless for speaking up for ourselves, we literally have the most caring heart, that's why we care what we feel and would not be able to stand the feeling of having to think what we could have said back and just letting it all slide, it hurts thats why as normal human response we stand up and let our thoughts out, being rude is depressing yourself until you feel worthless because of what other people do to you, that is being heartless.

I wish I had seen this video yesterday because I had to stand up for myself today( I don’t know if I technically stood up for myself because I was pretty scared and shaking but I did) so recently I have moved classes to go with my friend( kinda stupid cuz we broke up soon after) and in this class there was a group of girls that always laugh abt EVERYTHING. There was one who starts the laughing sessions so I’ll just call her “M”. So I noticed that M always looks at me and laughs with her group. At first I was ignoring her and kinda feeling bad cuz someone who laughs ALL the time is probably miserable(based on experience) but then after some time I got sick cuz I don’t go to school to be laughed at. Today after school I asked to speak to her outside class(her annoying friends still peaked from the door to overhear) and I asked her if we have a problem and why was she laughing at me. She literally told me that she wasn’t laughing at me and she doesn’t remember doing so. She gave me a look as if I was crazy or smth and kept denying and I didn’t know what else to tell her so I walked away. Now I kinda feel embarrassed cuz I’m starting to think I might have made the whole thing up in my head(cuz I have a lot of anxiety)

When I learned about boundaries, I started saying no to my brother because I wasn’t being his servant anymore. I’m not selfish I’m just setting boundaries between me and the world. He would start sayin please and slowly start screaming at me until I scream at him too and it would be mentally draining to me, he would sometimes start housing his hands to maybe push me so I would fight back but of course he was stronger and he would hit me. I don’t really stay around him now and but for some reason he thinks it’s all my fault that I “annoy” him.

I get scared unconsciously when people yell or speak in unpleasant tone to me. Even if I stand up for myself my voice gets smaller☹️ so for example I’m speaking in normal tone but s1 is trying to take upper hand by yelling and when I yell back at them they get back in their place. But i honestly hate so much raising my voice, that most of the times I don’t. So since I’m not yelling when I argue people start raising their voice and I get progressively scared.
