Truth is, most of the time, we collect lures because we like how they look, they arn't exactly any more effective than each other at catching fish as long as you have certain basics down right. A transparent one that doesn't rattle too much, and a solid colour brightly coloured one with a loud rattle, for each category. Then you get different types, shallow and deep diving cranks, suspending, popper (1 walk the dog, 1 cupped), and vibes. After that, you have jig heads + soft plastics. Each of them serve different purposes - surface, to moderate depth, to deep depth. But if you're a beginner, get a small shallow diving slow floating crank bait that is relatively cheap and go round casting into snags and stuff. After that, it is all about learning how to mimic panicked fish/injured fish movement, or prawns, or whatever it is you need to mimic
What I have heard is to try and match the hatch. Find a lure that is similar to what the fish is feeding on. I haven't had much success with lures though.
@John Yeah I haven't done a lot of lure fishing just shared what I've learnt from others. I've seen videos of snapper caught on spanners but it really depends on what your targeting , what they feed on and there hunting style. I personally will go with live bait any day.
Depends on the fish In your area, he says speak to your local tackle store because they'll inform you on what kind of fish are in your area. You don't want to go using a lure for one type of fish in a lake that's stocked with another type of fish.

Give up on bream luring if you're doing land based. Highly impractical and super boring because you will get 0 fish for a long long time. Or lose lots of lures in high difficulty areas (casting technique and accuracy is VERY important here as you can't retrieve lures used for shore based breaming - you'll only be using vibes/jigs). Tips though, go to sand flats and try for flat heads. Very good beginner lure fishing. You can also try to catch blowies at the same time, if you are able to hook up blowies with hardbody lures, you're doing it right. (they chase relatively fast, and won't always strike if they suspect enough that a lure isn't food -- however, they do strike a LOT, so if they don't strike, then you're definitely doing something wrong, and if they DO strike, well, that's 1 part down, it doesn't mean it will work on other species, but you're doing something right at least). Get a diving minnow/shad hard body and do a 'slow roll', so it dives and attempts to dig a little trail as you retrieve it back to you. If a flathead is close enough, it should strike. If the sand flat isn't as flat, and has lots of weeds and rocks and uneven bottom, flatheads may still be around, but it requires more technique with a suspending lure. The retrieve will be slower, and filled with lots of jigging motion to make it seem like an injured fish trying to 'swim' to shallows to recover. (Usually this type of fishing is more fun than pure flats, because you WILL get to see flatheads rise from the bottom and charge down your lure, but it isn't as easy though, so you may spend tons of time catching only blowies or nothing at all).
few hints to people who start lure fishing - make sure ya lure looks like baitfish that you can see in water for eg if u see prawns find lure that looks like that next thing make sure ya find fish no point doing 100 casts and there is no fish easy tip look for fishing chopping bait or deep drop offs and work around that !
still haven't caught a dam thing on a lure,yep i do all that stuff and luers would be ezy to use as i go camping/hiking but have to stick to bait as luers just do not catch fish as regularly as baits do
+kurt brayford Hi Kurt, Sorry to hear you haven't caught any fish on lures. They do work but yes, sometimes bait can be better in certain situations. Bait or lure, the most important thing is to be fishing in areas populated by the fish's natural food (baitfish, shrimp, etc.), with some kind of water-disturbing structure, and at the right time of the tide/day. If you can tick those boxes then half the battle is won. Good luck with your future lure fishing efforts.
there is always a difference and will be with the lures. fishing area (sea, river(big/small), pond, hills waterfall etc.) the best is to use a small lure like the size of your nose hole, small is always good and effective.
+Srib Hi Srib, if your lures are spinning then the front towing eye might not be straight, or they are being swum too fast. The speed at which a lure can be moved varies a lot from lure to lure but most swim better at slower speeds than fast. I suggest checking the front eyelet and if necessary making small incremental adjustments with your pliers to see if you can straighten the action. If you are experiencing this with all lures then try moving them slower. Are you trolling or casting? And what specific lures are you using?
He said talk to your local store because he doesn’t know what fish are around everyone’s location, sure he could have sat there and named 5 thousand lures you can use or give you the tip of going to the store around you and asking. A good allround lures are the squidgie soft plastic in bloodworm in 50-80mm Use a braided fishing line daiwa j braid is a good start dont use jarvis walker crap a 6lb fluorocarbon leader to connect to your braid is a good allrounder for river fishing you can connect that using a alberto knot Pick up a decent budget rod such as the daiwa aird or the atomic arrowz series and match that will a decent budget reel like the daiwa aird lt Make sure the rods graphite and around 1-3kg or 2-4kg rod is good . Also hardbody lures such as the atomic shiner work well My main fishing setup is Rod 1.5-3.5kg Reel 2000 size Braid 6lb Leader 4lb After that its just a learning curve im a land based fishermen and you will just start learn things and catch more fish once you have a decent setup i will give a few tips though 1 i found bream pick up the soft plastics and drop it so you have to watch your line for bites a good intercator that fish has picked up a soft plastic is that you will see you line flick once or twice when you see this set the hook 2 if you using bait bread works extremely well on a size 8 hook for big and small bream 3 get out there and have a go you cant get good at fishing unless you fail and learn sometimes i might only catch 3 or 4 fish Other times you might catch 14 . It just depents 4 weather and tides make a huge difference when fishing . They can mean the difference between a good day of fishing and a bad one Anyway i hope that helps . And btw don’t watch videos by jarvis walker or buy any of there products there crap even the lures are crap Oh i find areas that a good fish holding ground are jetties and wharfs or anywhere where theres structure .but open sandflats work well on a rising tide and once you got a fish you will know it . The first few times you use soft plastics you will usually miss a few fish you will usually pull the hooks on the fish or feel the bite and forget to strike.but after that its just smooth sailing. Yes I do as long as there not to whippet like the traditional Jarvis walker fibreglass rods shimano eclipse baitcaster is good yes graphite rods are much more sensitive stiff and lighter but at the same time much much more expensive and you have to be super super careful with them they snap like anything fibreglass take a lot of abuse but also are heavier and usually floppy depending on the rod and specific material used ugly stik golds are a great choice anything you got is better then nothing remember your grandfather would have caught fish on sticks literal sticks or hand lines .or fibreglass rods old heavy ones
A great fisherman but shit brand. They great for starters but Jarvis walker needs to bring out high performance rods. Stuff that doesn't rust up after a week.

Oliver Joey How long you leave your lure in the water during each retrieve will depend on your choice of lure and the prevailing conditions but it's important to remember that there is no rush to get your lure back to your rod. Many fish prefer a lure that stops and starts, with the pause often being the catalyst for a strike, so be sure to make it a good pause of a few seconds at least, between each lure movement. And work the lure all the way back to your position in case a fish is following. As for how long to fish around each area, a general rule of thumb is that you should keep casting until you've covered the area well and if you catch fish keep working the same area until the action stops; or, if you don't feel any strikes during that time then move on to a new area and then cover that well with your casts, and so on. +Gobind Khalsa That's a big question! ;) There is no one lure colour that is best for every situation because there are many variables, such as the target fish, water colour, time of day (i.e. how much light), etc. A general guide to use is that you should fish with natural looking colours-those that mimic real baitfish-when the water is clearer; and bright loud colours when the water is dirty. If you are just starting out and were hoping for a simple answer to try then I suggest you could start with a simple gold/black combination. That works for me on many fish but please don't let that suggestion stop you from trying other options, it is only one of many colours I use. I think the gold/black pattern works well because of the contrast between the two colours and how that appears as the lure rolls, more so than the colours themselves, so keep that in mind when choosing other colour combinations. I hope that helps.
Make sure you make your rods stronger because they can't support much weight, I clean my rods and reel about every week but they will only last for about 5-6 months untill it fully snapps, not hating just saying
