1. Mindset 2. Babysteps- don't overdo, take it one step at a time (literally) 3. Some good running shoes 4. Don't give a shit what people think 5. prioritize
i have to be honest, as a physician i love when overweight patients start running but they fail to take it slow and most hurt their knees so bad because they are overweight. TAKE IT SLOW. hurting your knees can immobilize you and cause you to gain more weight
start recommend low heart rate running. it makes people able to run longer sessions and you don't feel like you gonna die during the run. it also adds less stress on the body and less chance of injuries. started with this type of running a month ago, and instead of dreading going out, i now look forwards to my runs and actually enjoy them, which i never would have imagined
@@strictlybusiness2262 i started MAF training 3 months ago. back then i was in so bad shape i couldent "run" faster than 10:30 - 10:45 min/km, so terrible slow. today i ran 7.5km at 7:40 min/km, so basically 3min/km faster. the improvement for me is mindboggeling
For me it was Achilles tendinopathy. Went to hard to fast 🤷 Now I’m mixing it up with weights and cycling. 1 hr weights ish, 5km run, 15 km bike ride, working much better than doing 20km walk/run per day as an obese man 😆. I think I have healthy body fat percentage now though.
I’m a runner that’s overweight and has never ran before. Thanks for the tips man, you hit the nail on the head with people who have never been overweight making videos for overweight people. My shoes are in the mail and I’m starting when they arrive. I refuse to be this size this time next year
Hey oTURLo! That's fantastic, you took the first step and have the right mindset. That's half the battle. Wishing you good luck on your running journey, let me know if you have any other questions once you get going :)
@Cian I’ll never get people with your mindset. Whether they did or didn’t isn’t any of your business. So you not only inject yourself somewhere your opinion isn’t necessary, but you choose to be negative. I promise you life is so much easier when you’re not being unnecessarily negative.
@CianWho made you the authority of “ridiculous behavior”? You’d think as the head of it you’d avoid ridiculous behavior. How do you know they’re not a runner? They didn’t respond to you. They could’ve at this point run for marathons than you, at a faster pace even. Either way, you don’t know. He could be sitting on his couch, or running marathons. And despite what they’re doing, you feel the need to assume that they must not be running. Is that not ridiculous? You have nothing to point you in one direction or the other. But, I digress. Any genuine “runner” wouldn’t cry and wine and mope about how “offensive” it is that people aren’t running. Literally who gives a single flying f*ck. Waste your time on running if you love it so much, instead of commenting negatively on things that don’t concern you in the slightest.
You are right, it's SO hard to find a previously overweight person or fat person who currently runs, opinion. I found one video where the woman kept calling herself a previously "overweight" runner and at the end of the video she said she'd "finally lost her 10lbs". This is SO disheartening to someone 50kgs/100lbs overweight or more. I am in week 4 of the C25K an still run at 6am in the dark. Your videos and progress have been very inspiring. Thank you.
Great advice!! I love the first one “I AM a runner” ….I need to start thinking like this!! 6 weeks ago I couldn’t even run 30 seconds without feeling like I would collapse… now I can run 2 minutes at 4.5-5mph.. it’s all about progress vs. perfection #Babysteps
@@TaterTotTati333 - I have a peleton tread so the beginner classes helped me alot. I work on speed & distance. I started with walking/jogging intervals or hiit classes …one minute walk then jog 30 seconds…once the 30 seconds didn’t feel so hard for me I moved up to 45 seconds, then one minute and so on. now I am able to hold my runs for about 3 1/2 minutes at 6mph a time before I need to recover and walk again . It’s taken me a few weeks but again it’s all about progress and baby steps to get your body where it needs to.
1 year ago I weighed 270 pound. Last week I dragged my now 190 pound body through my first full marathon. Weight loss wasn't really intentional, just kinda happened when I started intermittent fasting (eating 1-2 times a day within a 6-8 hours "eating window") to fix my digestion. Probably cuz of a (larger than recommended) calorie deficit, I lost about 50 pounds the first 3-4 months. Started running in april this year, mostly cuz of some mental health issues. Got completely hooked, and today I'm feeling better than ever. If weight-loss is your goal, I think your main focus should be your diet - eating less is (surprisingly) the way to go. If happiness is your goal, start running :) I recommend forefoot running (landing on your toes basically) to avoid injuries (heel-striking is not very kind to your knees, especially for us heavy-weighters). Just start really slow, your calves will need some time to adjust. The tips in this video are great, consistency is key! I hope you find your motivation to run. For me it was a preferable alternative to panic attacks, hehe... ((Im good now, but can't seem to stop running))
I'm down to 340lbs through dieting and recently started lifting weights. My wife said I needed to start jogging to help lose weight faster. Came here for advice on how to start and found your video. Good stuff dude
Tell your wife to shut her skunk hole and that you’ll lose it when you lose it. You can’t start jogging off top being heavy. Gotta take ur slow. You’ll hurt yourself. What an inpatient twaht she is No offense bruhv
Such a great video, especially #4 for me. Lots of time on the treadmill before I went outdoors. However, I'm still overweight (250 from 360), but I've stopped caring what others think. 😆
@@BrendonCamm yessir, last week I picked up the Clifton 7s and my knees are thanking me lol I'm 5'8 210 lbs retired military.. Just looking to get rid of this pregnancy weight I gained with my wife
These are great tips. I have always say I want to run/walk a 5k. I’ve been saying that for years and having extra weight does not help. I have officially signed up for my first 5k.
So crazy how this was recommended to me after I went for my first run of the year. I was 292 pounds and I've slowly lost the weight down to 242 so far. I've eve got a pair of Hoka trainers haha I would recommend them to everyone, so comfortable. Great video
Well done Brendon!!! I know the struggle! I was 266lbs and lost 100 in about 2 years. I'm so happy you found your love of running. Great video and great tips for your views! Congrats on such a great channel!
That's fantastic!! It's really darn tough to pull yourself out of that mental state to change your life for the better eh? Congrats on such an amazing transformation and thank you for spreading your journey and experiences for others to get inspiration from. We'll have to have a chat sometime on our journeys! Have a great week Dave, thank you for the kind words and taking the time to tune in :)
Thank you! I used to run 20km on weekends (about 5 years ago), and about 2km on working days when I had time, and gradualy stoped and gained lots of weight. Few months ago I tried running. First evening I managed to run 400m, I felt fat squishing my internal organs. Second day I ran 800m. Then I stopped. When you sad: ,,Imagine you are runner…” , something just cliked in me. I don’t want to run to lose weight. I want to lose weight so I can run freely.
Brendon, I just really want to say thank you so much for this advice. I am a sophomore in High School who is obese but I really want to join Lacrosse. I know that running has not been something I've practiced before but I am so determined to push myself even harder than I normally would. This video has taught me so much.
Hey Radachel! That is such a great attitude to have, you can achieve whatever you put your mind to with that type of thinking. I'm happy you found the video useful, if you have any other questions please let me know. Good luck with your Lacrosse and running!
I hope you got some value from these tips! I know how tough it is to start running when you're overweight ( or in my case... obese). But I promise you, YOU CAN! If you have any questions please let me know, I'd be more than happy to help you along on your journey. Appreciate you all taking the time to tune in, have a great day! 😎
I had a question! I’m very obese ( and anemic) sometimes I’ll run and get chills and feel faint. Is there any tip or routine I can start off with to get my heart pumping? I’m to used to speed walking but I would like to push myself to running!
Listening to this eagerly. I finally hit 296lbs and couldn't take it anymore. Running is total hell on my feet so I'm taking it easy on how much running I'm doing and trying to learn how to run without killing my feet. Hopefully in a couple years I can do a video like this. Excellent encouragement my friend, thank you for taking the time uploading this.
Running was absolutely awful on my feet when I started as well. I had to try a bunch of different shoes and then eventually I found some that were manageable, but yeah taking it easy to start and getting the running movement down is the best way. Good luck with your running journey, I'm looking forward to your own success video! :)
@@502Loco If you're asking me, things are going great. The major change is moving to a much cleaner diet (more veggies, more lean high quality protein, waaaaaaay less sugars and worthless carbs, eating only carbs that come with good nutrients like oats, beans, etc. I've also been lifting weights for the past 13 weeks and gained noticeably more muscle. Weight is down by roughly 30lbs.
@@RedfishCarolinawhat’s it like now? I thought running 5 minutes while fat was bad advice, since he’s correlating tendon strengthening with time with the shoes.
The first tip about mindset is absolutely amazing. I was 18yrs old and 83 kg at 5 feet 3....very undeconfident and not at all comfortable running. However when i switched my mindset to being a runner...it really helped. I am now at 5 feet 4 and 66kgs....best shape of my life.....THANKS A LOT
I ran in my 20’s but running in the Army made me hate running. So, I stopped and gained 70 pounds over a decade. At 53 I am finally running again and it is great.
@@BrendonCamm I took up the idea of slow jogging from a book I picked up in Japan. I started running after 9pm or before 5am so no poor soul has to see or hear me running. :)
I started running in 2018 at 220lbs I was down to 160lbs two and a half months later maintained until 2022. Now in 2024 I have put on 100lbs and am trying so hard to get back into it but it is so discouraging the pain and exhaustion I feel. I have to remind myself to start slow like I did the first time. Thank you for the video, we are our own worst critics forsure.
I'm 45, at the end of june 2021 I was 296lbs. I started by walking 2km/day.. then fast walking, also I cut off 90% of red meat and 90% of sugar off my diet... by end of july I started jogging. Since then I dropped to 263lbs! I am soooo amazed by what jogging did in my life. Yes the pounds off are great, but the progress I did in my mind is what really matters. Baby steps was what got me through the begginer's shame. Now I am addicted to jogging and pursuing new goals. These tips are awesome!
Thanks for this video. I used to be a runner, but I thought that I couldn't anymore because of the strain on my joints and legs. Point 2 really resonated for me. I don't have to run for miles, I can just start with 5 min each day, stretch and recover. Allowing my body to get used to it again!
I am a 16 year old kid… trying to lose weight and found running and want to begin and this motivated me so much! Tomorrow I’ll try to run 1 block… since I barely could run 2 laps around a track 😅…
I agree with the not wanting to hurt part which is why I don't have a personal trainer or a gym partner I don't want anyone yelling at me or forcing me to do something that's going to hurt. so far it's been 3 months and I lost about 20 pounds on my own
What i find helpful was having a routine first . So my routine is every night , breeze walk for 30 mins first. Then i will slowly introduce running into it. Right now im down by 3 kg already. Still overweight but i will get there . (Ps i cant run much due to having a bad knee)
My biggest issue is my mind believes I'm 17 again. I worked out religiously before I started driving a truck, in 6 years I gained 150 lbs, so being at 370 it makes me mad because all I do is see myself when I was 17 and I can't physically do what I used to in the gym. This video really helped me figure a lot of things out when it comes to the mindset of things. Baby steps it is
Hey Michael! I know that feeling well. I played Rugby & Football through high school, and while I couldn't run for the life of me, I would go into the gym and lift. When I decided to add exercise back into my life I felt pretty defeated, everything was hard. But taking the small steps and having the mindset that these little things will add up makes it much easier. Good luck on your journey man! Have a good day :)
I really appreciate this video. I’ve been sober and clean for two years now and it’s time to tackle my weight issue. I have a wife and kids if I don’t start working on my weight I won’t be around to see them graduate from high school. Im almost 40 and was very active in high school. I have lost motivation over the years and I’m ready for my physical change. I went out today for five minutes and I felt like I was going to die lol but it felt good I can’t wait to do it again tomorrow. Thank you!
Hey Matt! That is a fantastic start, in the beginning it feels absolutely terrible, but it will only get easier the more time you put in! Keep it up, thanks for tuning in :)
These tips are good. My goal right now is to run for 25 mins. So I go outside, run as much as I can, take breaks and can’t head home till the time is up.
Man you nailed it with the mindset thing. I've been running for just a couple weeks shy of a year now and I was very clear from the start that everything I was doing, exercising, eating less cake and fewer burger, ACTIVELY managing my caloric intake- was to feed into running, not losing weight. I have sooo many pairs of shoes now... Down from 230's to 180's. Currently training for a half.
Hey man thanks for the tips. About 8 years ago I dropped from 266lb to 210lb, at first I could only run for 5 mins but then I got addicted and was running for up to 50 mins within a few months. Then I suffered a knee injury and fell into a depression because I couldn't run anymore without excruciating pain. I'm now 322lb (lost 17lb from walking the last few weeks) looking to get into running again with a dodgy left knee.. I'm hoping its repaired enough :D
Hey man!! That's great that you're slowly getting back into it, I'm hoping for the best for you!! Knee issues are one of the worst things to deal with. Let me know how your knee makes out as your start running again :) Have a good day!
Hey man, thanks for this video. It's nice to see you reply to each commenter and give unique advice to each person's situation. That's really cool of you. Great tips on this video as well. I was 273 lb a while ago, I'm down to 215 and want to give a shot at improving my cardio for physical, but also mental health reasons. Appreciate the tips brother!
Hey man! I really appreciate the kind words. I remember feeling kind of lost when I was starting out with my weight loss and running so I want to be as responsive as possible for others who are going through it. That's a very impressive amount of weight you've lost, I know how dang tough it is. One of the driving factors for me to lace up my shoes everyday is for mental health reasons, running is a powerful thing. Wishing you the best on your cardio journey!
Hey, thanks for the video. I've looked up a lot of videos and you're right that they are from well meaning people, but people who have never been 300lbs. I started walking almost a month ago and I am up to walking 3 miles. I tried to do the interval walk run (more like jog for me) that is recommended of 1:1 and I just couldn't do the minute. Someone else recommended 30 second jog and 90 second walk. I did that for two days and I found that I could do 30second jog and 60second walk. I started out doing 5 intervals of that and then the rest of my 3 mile walk at my normal pace. I am up to 8 intervals and while I was exhausted, it didn't stop me from walking the rest of my 3 miles after the walk:jog intervals. My goal is to get up to 1 mile of the intervals and then little by little increase the time I jog each time.
I’ve gone from being completely sedentary with type 2 diabetes to running 5 days a week. I know I need to lose weights but I said to myself- I’m running for my general health and fitness - especially my mental health. I knew if the focus was solely my weight I’d get disheartened if I never saw change. I focus on how good it makes me feel . Some days are easier than others
Overweight , newbie here. So true about baby steps. I hurt my knees a few months ago and said I'd take it easy this time around. 4 weeks now into prepping training with the just run app and 4 weeks more to go to my first 5k. I am doing this for me! 🎉
Started at 380. Hoka Gaviota 3 and Brooks Beast were and still are simply amazing shoes for obese runners. 4 months later I’m at 330 now I’m starting to get the confidence of getting out there to run
@@DavyDave1313 I went today didn't even finish the video; read ur comment and another guy whose similar startimg weight comment and thought if they can do it so can i.
@@DavyDave1313yes! Facts. Even if you're doing the treadmill, slower speed, steeper incline is the ticket! I went from 428 to 182 in two years. Seriously the walk a lap jog a lap method was the best for me, then run the straight away and walk the corners, then next thing you know you're doing the whole mile. I got up to a full marathon. Stick with it.
I got into swimming first and now find running a little easier. Not even thinking about the weight, it's not what it's all about, it's about a good mindset. Thank you for the video❤
Lots of great tips here! Something to add is to change your path up. I was running the same loop for a while and then changed to a bike path and I was able to go for longer!
Thanks so much Deepak! Those 10 pounds can be the toughest to lose, they seem impossible... but just keep on pushing and I'm sure you'll be successful!! Appreciate you tuning in, have a good evening :)
Thank you so much for this. I'm the youngest child in my family and all my three older siblings are overweight and my mom is constantly on my case about forcing me to lose weight quickly with keto diets and exercises. This helped a lot. 💗
Hey Chimeziri! If you lose the weight quick using a diet that you don't truly enjoy you'll always gain the weight back. You have to find what works for you and that you enjoy doing :) I'm happy to hear this video helped, if there's anything else I can help with please let me know!
Underrated video dude! You were instrumental in me beginning my pursuit of running. Got some decent shoes (Nike Downshifter 10s, could be better but they were in stock and fit well), and started with a little run/walk routine for maybe half a mile. Now, two months in I just got back from over 2 miles and I’m constantly improving my pace too. Haven’t touched a scale since before Covid because I don’t want weight to be my motivation, but I want to lose weight in the long run and trust the system. I really appreciate your tips and your encouragement.
Wow, now this just made my Monday evening! I am humbled that I played even a small role in your running journey. That is absolutely the right attitude to have, losing weight is just a byproduct of living a healthier lifestyle and running :) If you need anything or have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out on here or Instagram! Congratulations on the success you've had so far, can't wait to hear your progress after 6 months!
Yeah he got my subscription too for the wisdom and personal experience insights. Down 70 and still ashamed to run shirtless. Running like mad, if you have some mid-journey mentality tips they would be greatly appreciated. Still a ways to go @ 270lbs from 340
Hey Paul! Thanks so much for subscribing, means a lot. My best advice for mid-journey mentality is to remind yourself the hardest part was getting started, and that it will only get easier as time goes on. You're down 70 pounds, that's amazing! Keep up the great work!
I've been a runner at various points in my life, most notably during my military stint, but I never really learned to love it. At 55 I've recently taken it up again because I wanted to lose some weight and feel more healthy. For some reason I'm just really dialed in now and enjoying the hell out of it. I've started to lose weight, but my perception has changed from 'I'm running because I want to lose weight' to 'I want to lose weight so I can be a better runner'. It's hard to explain and I don't know where this change of attitude came from, but I really welcome it and I can't believe I'm enjoying running this much.
That's a great mindset to have! It's funny how we can hate running for such a long period of time and then all of sudden it becomes a passion. I hope you have a great day, thanks for tuning in :)
382lb watched and read comments went out and jogged for first time in 9/10 years. went a few hundred yards ; seen someone I know felt a bit self conscious but who gives a fook she don't know anyone I know anyway what will she care. Feel so great for going been putting it off for years. Just do it guys
Love all of this video! BUT for the ladies and any BIPOC who would not feel comfortable or safe going to any neighborhood, find a school track or run when it is early in the morning or midday. Some people around is not a bad thing for safety. Also, try a local high school with a track. My local school left their track open during the pandemic for runners. And of course, it is never crowded. I highly suggest that you do not try to run to secluded because it is not safe. I know this may seem cringy to some but I’m American and these are the steps we gotta take, sadly. Anywho, I LOVE this video. Thank you!
Hey Trish! That is such a great point, I'm going to pin this comment to increase the visibility. This is something I always take for granted living in a very small town on the east coast of Canada, but something that is so important to be aware of. In the future I will be better in raising awareness of these issues to make sure all of us runners are taking the steps to remain safe :) Thanks so much for taking the time to tune in and leaving a great comment!
I can see where you’re coming from but I think that applies to everyone. I’m not “bipoc” but I live in North Philly. There are many areas I simply can’t go at night because my appearance makes me a target. I know countless people who’ve been assaulted and robbed walking, biking or running home at night. Just a month ago a temple student was shot and killed walking home. A couple weeks later two were shot leaving a party. I don’t think any of that is a bipoc only problem
I used to run and it felt so good. Seems like ages ago. l want to start training again, this time I’m 50 lbs overweight and feeling overwhelmed. Just looking for inspiration and came across your video. Thanks for the tips! I appreciate it. 😊
This was a really good take and helped me reframe everything in a way no one ever has. Honestly, taking Itty bitty baby steps sounds so much more attainable than doing a mile of 30/60s day one. Cheers, mate.
Dude, thanks for your honesty and candid information on all of this! I struggle with my weight and diet, but love running. Really appreciate these tips!!
I’m 5’3 135 lbs and have been slim my entire life however I can’t run more than 90 seconds.. maybe its a mental block but I don’t like the feeling of the heart rate when it’s over 50 bpm. Watching this in hope that I can override the anxiety.
You got this, Chad! One day at a time. Some days will be easier than others, if you have an off day don't let it discourage you..get back out there the next day :) good luck with your journey, thanks so much for tuning in!
I was 210 and 5ft 7in. I did brisk walking for a month to lose the first 14lb to make it easier on my knees. I did couch to 5k to kick off. 7 months later I lost 28lb and run 6 times a week I run 12km every weekend and 5-7km weekdays. I have more energy than I did 10 years ago. Turn 50 this year. I hope you started. I hope you didn't give up. You can do this!
I was a runner 20 plus years ago. Just decided to start again. This video was very helpful. I will definitely watch more of your videos to keep me on track. Thanks!
Progress isn’t linear. It’s like getting a truck out of the mud. But once you get to being able to jog for 30 minutes things really open up for you. Personally I feel a switch in me go off at about 20 minutes where I feel like I am in the run, not like I’m running. It’s like I’m observing myself run. I still feel pain, but it’s more of an observation of pain like I’m flying and my cockpit is going off with alarms for low air, pain, cramps, soreness. Every time your plays a trick to stop you, and you push it, be happy because you broke a barrier. With that said, don’t set unrealistic goals at first where you are set up to fail. Set up and knock down some easy wins
@@BrendonCamm, more than you know. I've been trying to start running for around six months. Twice I started, made it a couple of weeks, and found an excuse to stop. About a month ago, I was diagnosed with Diabetes. Now I'm serious. Thank you for your kind reply. I'll be watching.
I can not stresss enough how much difference good fitting shoes does. More expensive doesnt equal better. Go see a running specialist/foot guy/ whatever they are called in your country, even if it cost you a little bit of money. Find out if you pronate, or if youre neutral or have other stepping issues. I started running in a pair that were old and neutral, i pronate and i could probably run about 500m before my feet started to give up and hurt. But a specialist helped me and i got a pair of New balance 860 and they stopped all the hurting.
My look on life has started to change and you've affirmed it. Too many people our there say go hard non stop, set super high goals and go to achieve them. But nah, if your mindset isn't correct (which I think is a massive problem in our society today) you won't ever reach those goals. You have to change how you look on life. Change your bad habits to good. Have to retrain how you look at life.
I love the change your mindset advice! If you think you are a fatty... it can be a self-fulfilling prophecy.. so don't let it be. You are a guy who is just trying to "lose a couple pounds".
Great tips. I've tried running twice following beginner plans. Both got me burned out. This time I will design my own plan, designed for me specifically
I’ve been having great success with jogging and walking. Full on running is too high impact, my feet and even knees hurt. But a jog/walk combo? Brilliant.
1.) reframe mindset. Most start running when overweight. Better to shift your identity to a runner who is overweight. This will build confidence of being a runner not an overweight person. Runners come in all shapes and sizes 2.) take baby steps. Go out for a short amount of time and stop even if you think you can go longer. If you push yourself you’re gonna be soar and crampy. 3.) proper footwear. A lot of foam, will compress and protect your joints. Start low and slow and with proper gear 4.) find a quiet a street, not wanting people to see you. Embarrassment from the jiggling and sweat. Limit exposure 5.) prioritize recovery and mobility. You’re likely in a sedentary lifestyle so body may be tight and not moving. Get proper stretching routine before and after run.
300+ here, another tip to consider, try running early on the morning or at night, so the climate is on the colder end of the spectrum... It is a nightmare trying to run at 10am when the sun is high in the sky and hammering you.
I'm 5ft 11 (180cm) and 270lb and I have the stamina of an old man. I hated the gym and now I'm obsessed with weightlifting, I'm hoping I can change my mindset to running and end up loving it
Hey Becca! Had a good chuckle at the stamina of an old man 😂 If you were able to change your mindset about the gym I think you'll have success with changing it towards loving running! If you have any questions let me know :) Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for the advice here. I really appreciate it. Exercise is my biggest hurdle at this point. I've actually lost about 40 lbs over about a year and a half just from switching up what and how I eat. I've never actually had an issue shedding weight, it's just getting into the mindset to put out the effort to exercise consistently. One of the things I realized watching this is I probably need to be more patient with my progress. I try and tell myself I'll ease myself into it, but I always end up ramping it up too soon and wearing myself out to where I don't feel like doing it.
Hey Kyle! That's definitely what I found - I tried many times to go from nothing to running/exercising everyday. It was too much all at once, but when I took the time to ease into it that's when I became able to sustain it :) Thanks for tuning in, good luck with your journey!
Hi Gildridt! I'm so glad this video helped you out. Running at the start is sooo difficult for everyone, take it day by day and reflect often on where you currently are compared to where you started. If you consistently get out there you'll no doubt make progress!
This is great advice. I'm so tired of "size doesn't matter" in many of these YT videos. They simply disregard the overweight population. I do think they are trying not to hurt feeling, etc (and steer clear of bad publicity). But any idiot watching their videos can see they outweigh this person by 40-100+ lbs. I've never been 300lbs. I got up to 214lbs a couple years ago. I'm still ~200lbs at any given time. It is very hard to run heavy, especially if you want to increase your speed. I started running with a HR of 165+, even for 11-13 min miles. I'm now at ~155 bpm for my 10 min miles. But I do not see this going down any further unless I drop the weight. I've added about 2-4 miles of walking every day in an attempt to reach ~15,000 steps. My diet quality is good, but I consume way too much food (2-3 turkey burgers + a plate of sweet potato fries, giant bowels of spaghetti, etc). Your video is much needed on YT. Thanks!
Hey Brendon! I'm overweight and I want to start running because I want to lose weight and build strength! You're completely right, most people weren't obese to begin with so they don't really know the struggle. Thank you so much for this video! Wish me luck because my mental health keeps pushing not to run ahahaha I jusst end up zumba dance work out at home because I'm so shy.
Great video. I've been doing the NHS couch to 5k and I run around our suburb at night. I use Nike Air Max AP. They seem pretty comfortable for me and I started at 273lbs. Used to use Asics when I was fitter but Nike actually seem a good fit for my wide feet.
Thank you for sharing! I have been wanting/thinking about running and even attempted it a time or two but since then have put on more weight and these tips definitely make me feel like I can give it a descent shot!!
Hey Dominique! You can absolutely give it a good shot :) The hardest part is getting out the door, even if you get out for 2 minutes it's better than nothing! Thanks for tuning in and good luck with your journey.
Hi Brendon, I just want to say the biggest ‘THANK YOU’ for your amazing video - this is truly the very first video that I’ve seen that makes so much sense and gives me hope which is from an ex-overweight person. As you say, those that run and have never been overweight cannot really understand how it feels to start running. I have taken all your tips on board and will put them in to practice on my Tread - biggest thanks and best wishes for a prosperous New Year 2024. 😊
Started my running journey today (Currently at 225lbs- 5’8). Was looking for tips for overweight folks and came across your video . I have a subscribed to your channel. Great info and thank you so much for the motivation.
AWESOME video!! I tried running again a few years after high school (and +40lbs) and gave myself serious shin splints after 1 run trying to do “too much too soon”…. Aka pushing myself too hard (and not considering that my bones aren’t used to the impact of running… not to mention running with additional weight!) That was in 2020/21 and I’m ready to try again!! Thank you so very much, these are great tips!!!
I was never that serious about running, but 10 years ago I could run 2.5 miles in about 20 to 23 minutes, at a bodyweight of 145 lbs. Then I stopped running and focused entirely on weightlifting and over-eating. Now I finally started running again weighing 200 lbs (with a lot of abdominal fat), and I can barely do 1 mile in 13 minutes. 😫 My plan is to do 1 mile, twice a week. Then do it 3 times per week. I'd eventually like to work my way up to 5 miles, 1 to 3 times per week. But man, running at this heavier bodyweight makes such a difference!
Eyo! I'm currently 271lb down from 390lb at my heaviest. I recently went for a run, expecting the usual 30 seconds then death! But to my surprise I decided to crack on and ended up running for around 15-20 mins non stop. This is the furthest and longest sustained run I have ever done! I truly believe it was purely because in that moment I wanted to find out what my limit was, instead of the usual which was always just "I'm really uncomfortable so I'll stop for a bit!" I really think running is something I'm going to try and keep up as I want to try and get another 70lb off in the next year or so. Some great advice on here anyway pal so thanks!
im overweight start running 1 and a half months ago. and i couldn't even finish 1km without stopping and run out of breath, but i push through, now im doing 10k every day and my long run 21k on the weekends is all about consistency and mental toughest
I'm a treadmill runner, because it's been snowy and icy all year, but my best advice is get good gear, like shoes and a moisture wicking shirt/shorts. Second, music is a great motivator, it takes my mind off the numbers on the screen in front of me and gives me the extra oomph to run one more minute or walk an extra 30 seconds when I'm tired. I feel like I can breathe better and for longer while I run compared to my first week.
Hey man I just wanted to give you big thanks! This video inspired me to start running 5 months ago when I had 114kg. It was super hard to start and I could not run for more then 1 minute. Today I crave to run every day and I've lost 23kg in the process.
OMFG this was so good!!! It is true only another person who is or was overweight understands the thoughts and fears of running. I get very self conscious. I just started back to the gym...this time for real and for keeps. I am walking on the treadmill and i recently started running for like a couple of seconds. Today is day 3 of running . Imma try and do at least 10 seconds today. Thank u for that mantra "I am a runner that is a bit overweight" THAT helps!!!
Hey Kaila! I'm so glad you found the video useful :) I even get self conscious running to this day, it's natural! Having that mindset that you're a runner with a little extra weight really does help. Good luck with your journey!!
I ran track in high school, been sedentary since. That was 15 years ago. I've been starting to work my way up to being able to be active again. With all of the excess weight I have, even walking is a literal pain. I got to this video after just getting my first running shoes to use when I walk, and eventually run. I realize that the pair I got might not be great for my current ability and fitness level. I got the Endorphin pro and after watching this vid, I'm convinced that I may have made the wrong purchase. So any advice for a fellow runner who's now needing to lose weight? I'm walking 5 min intervals for about half an hour each day currently. Should I just go straight to running, and work my way up from the absolute minimum I can do without getting hurt? You got a new follower! Watching your video got me really hyped to go back to my true love of running after being a slob for 15 years! Thanks in advance!
Hey JC! That's great that you're getting back into an active lifestyle. You're right, the endorphin pros may not be the best choice for what you're looking to do, great shoe - but not ideal for walking for jogging. For your walking intervals do you walk for 5 mins and then take a break? If so, I'd say hold off on the running until you can walk for 30 mins straight and then start incorporating some run/walk intervals. Gotta build back up that aerobic engine! If you're currently able to walk for 30 mins straight I'd try adding in a little amount of running during your walking intervals (like 5-20 seconds to start, very small amounts) and build from there. Really appreciate you taking the time to tune in and for subscribing! Let me know if there's any other questions you have :) Good luck!
Yaaaas. I needed this. I used to be a runner but had a terrible accident and had to stop for a long time. Now im doing adf and trying to get it back and drop my old weight. Thank you for these tips.
I would like to reinforce the baby steps part. I have bad meniscus in both knees. I’ve been walking a lot just to strengthen my legs and build up to running. I’ve had knee pain in my right knee so I bought a compression brace for it. Went a bit while wearing the brace then my left knee started hurting. Ordered another brace for it. I’m currently trying to recover. I went a little too hard and am paying the price, temporarily. I highly recommend anyone overweight getting into walking or running to invest in a good pair of knee braces. Even if you don’t have knee problems like me, you more than likely have created a muscle imbalance for yourself by being sedentary. This muscle imbalance will cause knee pain and hip pain until you correct it by walking more. Baby steps though. If you’re feeling pain take a couple days off until the pain completely subsides.
I'm glad ...the first thing u mentioned was "u should think like u r a runner who is a little overweight " instead of u r a fat person trying to loose weight by running.......this is the thing I myself forgot .......I'm a football player and I'm literally embarrassed now to run in public as I have put on a lot of weight and ...I know I have run for longer time during matches and now I can't even run for a few minutes.......but I'm happy I have changed my mindset now ..... I'm doing what I love to do and I have did this before right? So I must stop being embarrassed now to run in public😅😇
Thanks for the video Brendon. I'm not TOO heavy (185lb) but I have little to no endurance but I'm aiming to become a LEO, before you can even get into academy you're required to at least make a 14 minute 1.5 mile, so I'm looking to start training
I start my running journey after I recover from a current stomach bug. I ran collegiately decades ago, but after I quit, I got fat, then transitioned that to weightlifting. I have reached all my goals in lifting, and due to just wanting to get healthier and finding a new challenge, I want to return to running. I have tried, unsuccessfully, a handful of times over the years, but I am forcing myself to be successful this time by registering for a 5k later in the year. I weigh about 240, not all fat, but much more than I’m proud of.
Some good points. Suggestion: @1:11 & @3:46 the video shows heal striking - maybe revisit this video and replace with a suit demonstrating a strike that is between ball & mid-foot strike.
