To be honest I have neglected swimming since school preferring field sports but unfortunately the last time I went back to the pool I decided to go into the intermediate group but I had lost my technique (although I can do an average breast stroke) and I couldn’t get my breathing right! He said come back next week and join the beginners! I didn’t want to be humiliated so never returned. However, I have now moved to the south coast and want to be better and more confident for next summer. Any tips for re-learning but avoiding humiliation?

Thank you for the tips. After 5 years I start swimming again. From competive swimming 2 times a day to not swimming. Feels like I have to start over again. But the feeling to swim again makes my very happy. Slowly building it up.

I am interested in swimming again after a three year break due to health. I was wondering how it was going for you and how long it took to get back into the swing of things.

Thanks for reinforcing the take it slow to start. I've been inconsistent on swimming since December of last year and now I can get into the pool regularly again. I just need to develop a good training plan.

I hate to say it, but I only swim to train for events/season. So that means I usually end up having an off season and then I start over from zero each time. This lay-off is nothing new for me. When I start a training cycle I try not to measure distance for the first two weeks. My “workouts” are designed to have fun in the water and work on technique. Having never been a competitive swimmer, I work on flip turns, bilateral breathing, drills, etc. Just basically playing. Nothing more than 50 yards at a time. I know that when I get tired, my form is gone as well. Get out of the pool and make sure to come back a day or two later to continue the progression until I’m building up the yardage again.

My local pools were closed from End Mar to End Jun. Prior to closure my CSS was 1:52 per 100 and breathing every 2 strokes. When pools reopen, it was terrible, trying to swim at 2mins per 100 was a real struggle. Realizing that I was going to take some time to get back my swimming form and with no race scheduled at all. I challenged myself to finally learn to swim bilaterally since I was going to rebuild my swim anyway. It's been 3 months now and I can comfortably do bilateral swimming breathing every 3 strokes and my CSS (surprise surprise) has since improved to 1:48 per 100 so I actually benefitted from the layoff !

@@imkarineseguin , due to social distancing rules, I do about 1x swim in a group. My other 2 swim sessions are usually solo.

I'm fortunate in that my local pool reopened in July but it's only now that I feel at a comparable level to before. The suggestion to half normal swim distance is exactly what I did, and then built up over about 3 weeks. To avoid injury I also mixed up the strokes a lot more than normal, probably swimming crawl only 50% of the time. Once distance was there, I increased the % of crawl to my normal 80%. Then it was a case of gradually building intensity. I'm still slower than before, but do now feel I'm getting there. Over the summer I talked to a swim coach about his swimmers and he told me that they had completely written off 2020 and were now planning towards 2021.

My last intense swim sesh was senior yr 2012. Just got back in the pool @24 hr today and do I got A LOT of work ahead of me but the first step is the most important because once you take that first step you can't take it back I'ma hit the pool everyday now

I remember as I got back to swimming in June when pools reopened after 3 months of lockdown in Poland. It turned out that I wasn't able to swim even 200 meters. It took me over a month to get back to my previous form. And a week ago swimming pools got closed again :/

Hey, so im my prime i would easily swim 15 laps of 50 m olympic size pool non stop daily!! After a break of few years, now I can't recover even aftet swimming just 16 laps of 25 yards pool! Is this normal? If i push myself for more than 16 laps, i need to take a rest day or even two to be able to get back into the pool! 😢

My local pool closed completely in March shortly after a refurb started that, due to Covid-related delays, is not due to be completed until January (at the earliest). :-( I have no practical alternative so it's duathlons only for the start of next year I guess.

I haven’t swam in a year because of the pandemic began back in March, I caught corona virus in January and it’s kinda hard to get back into it considering I’m also a lifeguard, ironic I know. But my lungs are struggling the most. I’m determined to get back into it.
