How To Stitch a Dead Mouth Shut

This is a short instructional video about my methods of closing a dead mans mouth. Morticians use various tricks to keep the decedents mouth closed and I haven't showed them all here because I just don't use the towel or a needle injector for example. I show how the mouth of the deceased person looks like, which is much different from what is showed in the movies or what many imagine. The most reliable one is suturing the mouth shut. I've done it many times now and it is by far the best of them all. Sometimes all I need to do is to close the mouth with a tissue paper or just with my hands. Rigor mortis plays a big role here, wheter I'm opening or closing the mouth. Sometimes the rigor mortis prevents me from opening the mouth even slightly and I need to wrap the head with something to catch the fluids that can come out of the mouth or nose while I'm turning the body on the side to dress it for the funeral. Closing the mouth is the hardest part of preparing the body for burial and the most rewarding one when the job is done properly. Since, for various reasons, I cannot show all this on a real dead body, I decided to act as one, doing all of the stuff on myself. It wasn't an easy video to film but I think that it was well worth the struggle and I had lot of fun making it.

This is why I need to make my final arrangements. I don't want embalming, blood out and fluid in, sewing and gluing, then put in coffin, viewed and buried. Just want a natural burial.

If you or your family want a viewing, your body should be prepared. Unprepared bodies look creepy! Mouth open, eyes partially open, skin discolored. They actually look like a zombie. If you ever have to identify a loved one you'll see what I mean. Prepared bodies look fake but unprepared bodies look like nightmares.

I hope that this video has left you with more answers than questions, but if you have any, I will gladly answer them. I forgot to add that I have used Teriyaki and Barbecue sauce for the "stuff coming out of them" part. It was supposed to be shown in the outtakes at the end but I completely forgot about it.

I sutured a deceased’s mouth using this method for the first time last week. Most mortuary work I’m fine with but I’ve always avoided mouths because they make me uncomfortable. I managed to get it done but need to practice a lot more, one day I’ll be able to do it in a couple of minutes without hesitation lol

Ive laid many patients out after death and families always request the dentures to be put back in. Sometimes rigor mortis sets in quickley and it cant be done and there is no way i would pull and push on the deceased...their dignity is more important.................so so sad
@MartinsGraveyard
@MartinsGraveyard Месяц назад
You can always fill the space between the closed gums and lips with tissue. If you form it the right way it looks very convincing. A picture of the person while alive helps a lot with this. Better than the sad caved mouth in my opinion.

I'm waiting for more videos in this topic, it is kinda taboo and hardly anyone has talked about it before in so open way. The dead people's faces you pretended were truly terrifying, seemed so real. I've been to many wakes of grand and great-grandparents yet just saw my brother's body and I could tell they glued his eyes shut: he wasn't embalmed; he was straight out of cold storage. That is the worst viewing experience ever; My baby brother was 30 years old.

The needle injector can break the mandible so I prefer suturing the mouth closed.

What if someone has an overbite and can’t close their mouth normally? Do you break the jaw?

I never had such a case so I have no idea.

I have watched an autopsy before as well, and can't really grasp why.

You probably have a case of a so called normal human curiousity. A harmless disease, that I suffer from since early childhood. Nothing to worry about 😉

That is partly the same reason I entered the funeral industry but also with the fact I have a genuine desire to help people. It was just the right thing for me to do!
