Nosebleed or epistaxis is a common condition which can happen to anyone at any time. Although it’s very scary when you see blood coming out of your nose. But nosebleeds are usually harmless and can be treated quickly and easily at home.
The most common cause of nosebleeds is dry air. This dryness can cause cracking in the lining of the nose making it easy to bleed. Other common causes include picking your nose, blowing your nose too hard, or injury to the nose. In rare cases, nosebleeds can be a sign of high blood pressure or some types of blood disorders.
If you experience a nosebleed, stay calm, sit down and lean your head forward. Don’t lie down or tilt your head backward. Pinch the soft area of your nose together for 10 to 15 minutes and breathe through your mouth. This will help stop the bleeding.
If the bleeding does not stop after 20 minutes, or if the nosebleed is severe, you should seek medical attention. To prevent nosebleeds, it is important to keep the inside of your nose moist by using saline nasal spray, Vaseline gel or a humidifier. Avoid picking your nose or blowing your nose too hard, as this can irritate the lining of your nose and cause bleeding.
Also, if you have a recent nosebleed, avoid doing heavy lifting, bending down or blowing your nose very hard, for the next 24 hours to avoid bleeding again.
