How to stop overheating GOPRO Hero 10 (and Hero 9)

Is your Gopro Hero 10 or Hero 9 unusable due to overheating problem? I have a workaround that eliminates overheating. Metal cage such as the Ulanzi G9-5 can act as a heatsink to cooldown the Gopro as long as the cage isn't exposed to direct sunlight.

Dear mate! You should also put 0.5mm thermopads, before you close the case, those are used to not permanently and without messing provide good contact. If you would use something like: TERMOPAD GELID GP-ULTIMATE 15W^m then this thing would never overheat at all. But you need to find 0.5mm or 0.25mm (which will be difficult). They do compress 50% or more. I am using GP10 on a bike, and it never did overheat - even highest bit-rate 5K30fps - just the battery dies. Any air flow will also help tremendously.

Great suggestion! It was already too tight sliding the gopro into the cage, but I will give it a try in the future.

I have the same Ulanzi G9-5 case, and I also added thermal tape to the bottom plate, but the system could still shutdown due to over-heat @4K60fps or in some case 1080p60. Anyway it is much better than without case or other brand metal case. My ultimate solution is to remove internal battery and battery door, using external power bank for max heat dissipation. Don't forget, battery generates a lot of heat as well.

I've tried removing the battery door and such on both of my 8 and they still overheat at 1080@30fps

would have been great cameras if they focused on fixing the overheating and not so much with anything over 4k

I found that I could extend the time before overheating from 25 minutes to more than 65 minutes by using rubber bands to hold a small damp (as moist as it can be without dripping) sponge onto the stock heat sink on the back of the Hero 11 Black Mini. Does GoPro sell a larger heat sink for this camera?

I put an Ulanzi door that has a charging hole in it. Gopro 9 4k60 (Narrow Boost) walking during the summer at 28C no shutdown. It only shutted down one time when I removed Boost.

UDTRADER, I have a question. What is the model of the Ulanzi case you have on this video?

Great video! I am curious if the microphone on the GoPro is muffled at all when using the Ulanzi G9-5 Metal Cage. The reason I ask is using the GoPro on a windshield, I do not have a place to put an external microphone.
@udtrader
@udtrader Год назад
Gopro has one active microphone right below the lens and there is a gap between the mic and Ulanzi case to capture sound. If you attach a Mic Adapter, then you can place an external mic anywhere. amzn.to/42G6Tem

G-9-5 vs G-9-14 Why choose one over the other? Also do these cases accommodate the camera media mod from Go Pro and if not what external mics do you recommend?
@udtrader
@udtrader 2 года назад
Both cases are great, but it comes down to preference having mic adapter mounted center/bottom or side/vertical making one configuration tall/centered and the other wide/unbalanced. Neither cases support media mod. As for mic, I use Godox M2 wireless (amzn.to/3zpaJMl) and Rode Videomicro. (amzn.to/3z6XfTY)

Hello. Thanks for this video. I am paraglider and i am used to film during many hours. I got Hero 2, 3+, 7,8,osmo action and insta360 one R 1inch mod. I amstill using the last 3 cameras (hero 8, osmo action1 and oneR) at the same time. I got many problems with gopro even if i did 6 hours continious films. But overheating and bug issues are crazy. One question: why didn't you test your camera onto an external battery (powerbank) to really know if your camera is overheating or not?!? If your camera evacuates the heat enough then it doesn't matter if it is filming 6 or 7 hours. On my sport (paragliding) it is quite common to start the camera on the helmet half an hour before the takeoff and then filming 2 or 3 hours and sometime many hours more. The wind and low temperature with the altitude is not enough to avoid gopro crash. But i didn't test with a cage. I just bought 2 brand new aluminium cages yesterday for osmo action and insta360 oneR (Ulanzi plus with booster battery). I am quite sure it will help dissipating the heat. BUT i think there is a very important property you maybe missed. When you are using the cage inside, not directly exposed to the sunlight, then i guess the color of the cage makes no difference. But outside, especialy with no wind, i am sure the black metal cage will be very hot in few minutes just because of the sun. I recommend to use white cage or mirrored/metalic grey color so that the sunlight doesn't increase the heat instead of trying to dissipate it! Hope maybe Ulanzi and this kind of company will think about their colors when building cages. Cheers. Denis.
@udtrader
@udtrader 2 года назад
@@denisgallego3130 You are absolutely right! Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight will cause the metal cage to transfer heat to gopro instead. I will take your suggestion and baseline test the gopro without battery in the next firmware (1.20?) release. Thank you.

if gopro started using aluminium as the original shell for their cameras it would fix the overheating easily, it would make it somewhat harder to make it waterproof though but thats pretty much nothing. also the price would be also be more expensive...

You can remove screws off the front lens cage on Ulanzi G9-5 to attach other lens. Otherwise, there's a variety of metal cages available for Gopro.

I returned my hero 10 today because Im not going to jump through ANY MORE hoops to get this thing to record for longer than 15 mins at 4k 60fps. I bought this to motovlog at 4k 60fps, but that aint happening. Super disappointed. Any advice? Ps: My hero 10 overheated at 4k 60fps in 15 mins in the media mod going 40mph strapped to my helmet. If that isnt cooling it off, nothing will. This is absurd.

your not stopping the overheating problem, if you did you wouldnt need the metal case. you just allowing the filming to continue. the heat would then go to the metal casing which means it will become hot for the user to possibly handle. and if the gopros original case gets really hot, just imagine how hot the metal case will get
