This swing thought has helped me immeasurably to tone down my hook. I’ve known for a long time that I’m sliding, but I didn’t have a swing thought to cure it. Keeping my left knee balanced with my right to enable me to jump has been a huge help. Thanks!

Started playing late '60's when "driving through" for power was needed, and the "slide" developed, so much so my right knee (I'm left handed) is damaged. Now using my core to rotate instead of arms, and hopefully incorporating this flex of the knees getting to the "jump position" in transition to deliver the club to its destination point will cure 50 years of a bad habit. Many thanks.

Just watched this a Chris. Been working so hard for over two years on backswing and shallow downswing. All that tons better but my major fault is a lateral movement with my whole body. Love this feeling of the jump position. Something to work on now.

Wonderful stuff and a big thank you! As a low marker I'm constantly frustrated by this problem which as you say, often results in shots being blocked or occasionally hooked - flippy hands as a result of getting stuck. Too much lateral movement, not enough hip rotation. Can't wait to work on this at the range tomorrow! Cheers from Sydney, Aust - Dave

To stop early extension on downswing: . Left shoulder starts down & forward as fall to left side, squat . Right hip & knee go towards target, not out . Pull the Left hip back behind you Early extension is the opposite of that…

Brilliant...great explanation & drill to stop sliding. I was trying to determine what is wrong with my downswing when I hit behind the ball as well as when I go back to my old habit of picking the ball (which is driven by my sliding). The idea of finding that center position of being able to jump straight up is just brilliant!

This video describes my play perfectly (apart of the better player bit at the beginning!). Took a lesson at local range with trackman which highlighted the issue perfectly. Not only was it causing me to hit the drive right (and then further right) with the odd snap hook thrown in but according to teaching pro robbing me of a lot of speed (probably 5 mph+ club head) simply because I was stopping myself rotating properly. If you are on mats (as I was) instead of an alignment stick he suggest getting 2 or 3 range baskets on top of each other by your left foot and try to rotate without hitting them. One question: when I try this drill so I am rotating more and swaying less I feel much more upright in the finish position - almost ram rod straight over left leg and oddly taller. Is this the correct feeling?
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 6 лет назад
Hi Justin, very difficult to say without seeing the swing but i would say that you are on the right lines here and everything you say makes sense, tall at the finish is always a good thing

Good video...but my slide includes my head and shoulders. At the top of my backswing, my first move is a 2 - 3 inch slide of my entire upper body towards the target. - then I start to turn. Any drill to help stop this?

Hi Chris, my non lead leg (the RHS leg) bends automatically and seems to drop very low, especially using irons - is this the same as sliding in the downswing. I feel its an automatic movement by my body in order to allow me turn in the upswing? Will your stop sliding video fix this leg drop? David

Great drill, Chris. I recently was paired with a college player at my local course and he pointed out my slide. He referred to how he was coached to the bow out his knees to fight the slide. I’ve tried doing that but I could not feel the point in my down swing at which I should do that. You’ve made it clear now when you point to the lead arm being parallel to ground and to the start of rotation (feel the belt buckle rotate at that very point). Excellent tip!

Chris. While am normally right handed and also played a lot of cricket as a young man with a strong right wrist- I am left handed at golf; and though I have worked a lot on my game, form, fitness, picked up a lot of tips etc from your videos and others and brought down my handicap to early teens, I still find myself pulling my shots a lot to the right - either by overswinging or the natural inclination - strong right side, right hand and movement of right leg (blame cricket!). If I can contain this i think i could bring my handicap down to single figures. Offset clubs in this regard dont help much of course. I rarely if ever slice so that is not a problem. Any tips or specific aspect to focus on. A number of tips and tricks are helping - like the glove under the right arm or the visual circle of the path and arc etc. I was encouraged to ask because of this clip. Thanks

I've started to do this to encourage better hip rotation but for me, it's no guarantee. However, it certainly appears to give more freedom to move the hips out of the way relative to straight feet. Good luck (though hopefully by now you've licked this one!). Cheers

I have this issue in my golf swing, a slide which creates too much of a reverse k. I assume , as you are performing a drill, that you are exaggerating your movements somewhat. I see two things that you are doing that I don't. 1) body compression, 2) you actually increase the spacing between your legs. I don't see your trail knee kicking out toward the ball any. Am I seeing this correctly?

I have come to believe that it is almost impossible to have too much of a lateral shift of the hips (from over the back foot to over the front foot) as long as it is accompanied by the right amount of hip rotation. When the two go together the right way, a lot of weight shifts from the back foot to the front foot, but the front hip won't shift more than it should towards the target. Do you agree?
@fairwayfreunde

I'm no expert, but what if you swing like Michelle Wie or Justin Thomas? It looks to me that they are never in a position to jump in their downswing. But maybe they straighten the left leg to prevent sliding?

Chris....It’s not just you but all instructors but anyway why make golf swing sound so complex?? If the guy has a swaying issue, he lacks the basic concept of golf swing. * Shoulder rotation is the focus, not hips or back! The whole bottom half just needs to seemingly remain quiet throughout whole swing. There obviously will be slight hip rotation in backswing but should never be a focus there at all. *The forward swing should also have a focus of remaining quiet in Lower half to ensure no forward sway. The natural forward motion of shoulders in forward swing ensures golfers finish appropriately. *players could just play with angles in backswing until they get it right.
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 5 лет назад
Hey Terrell, thanks for watching and appreciate your comments and views, there are no rights or wrongs in golf, which is why it is so great to discuss and debate. However, I do have to disagree with many of these points. I can almost 100% guarantee you that if a golfer who sways has a greater understanding of how to move better, they will still sway! Also bio mechanically we know that the lower body influences the upper body, so focusing your attention in the upper body is unfortunately gong to have limitations if the lower body does not function somewhat correctly. I’m certainly not suggesting that what I teach is better than anyone else, the correct way for everyone or the fix to all bad golf, but I have been coaching for over 20 years, have studied both the golf swing, the body and maybe more importantly, learning styles which has enabled me to get to the point I am at today and coach the way I do 👍
