Hey Matty, stellar video as always. A piece of advice from somebody that has been using the heat brush daily for the last 6 months- best to follow the same washing procedure and then applying a heat protectant (like argan oil) before straightening. Also 200 C (400 F) is said to be too damaging on the hair. 160 for thinner sections and 180 for the front thicker sections would be better. I use the blow-dryer+ brush to straighten it in a general direction and then the heat brush at 160 for the final straightening and to get the dips out. Try it out. Might give you a better look.

Awesome guide here always appreciate more people getting into using heat since it can be a real game changer once you understand how to use it, and can completely change outlook on what your beard can be. Heat changed game for me but the big thing is finding techniques that actually work for you, its very easy to mess up, just have to keep trying. I'd say biggest thing most people run into and struggled with, myself included for a long while, is simply pushing hair into face too much. Hairdryer or Brush? For me both, blow out underside and work with pick to get all tangles out, stretched outward look kinda crazy, gently pat it all down with a heated brush starting from sides and following rounded area of face, i never brush front under chin area straight down but always from angle as otherwise flattening the front can look really silly on me, more natural following curve of face. Cold shot with hair dryer after straight down. imo always always put oil in first couple minutes before using heat (right after drying from shower typically), for me at least significantly helps health of hair as someone with longer beard who uses heat every day, and has been at this point for years now, with that and good designed-for-beards wash products still feels as good, as soft as ever since i started doing that.

I periodically use a heat brush, usually when my wife and I are going somewhere or a family function etc. Day to day I work and well take me as I am. When I do use the heat brush I use beard balm prior to heating, not sure if that's right or wrong. I haven't used your texturing paste although I'm on my 2nd bottle of your wash and I love it. I was so surprised at the longevity of how long a bottle last. Thanks for the tutorial Matty!

No I've tried to use it so many times that I just gave up because it wasn't giving me the results I was looking for. But after watching this video. Now I understand the actual use of it. And I'll tell you what. My beard came out probably the best it's ever had. Thanks for the video in the tips

Thank you for this! My beard grows in kind of a weird way. On the right it grows almost perfectly straight down. On the left once it reaches a certain length it grows in a wave that curls sharply back and to the left. It ends up looking ridiculous. I used your tips for thermal straightening and it looks so much better now!

I'll for sure try more heat and tension. The specific issue I have is my beard is almost all gray now and the individual hairs have gone from mostly straight to having a mind of their own once I grow my beard out. I've tried trimming the really wild ones over the years, but now that it's all gray that's kind of a lost cause LOL. If you ever wanted to address a gray beard specifically it would be grand. Keep up the awesome work and I loved the actual science in this video!

i'm with you on the gray. my beard naturally curls and waves bad once past a certain length. i apply oil after the shower and let it sit a few minutes while i get dressed. i actually use a comb to pull the hair side to side while applying heat. after a couple "sweeps" you can see the hair go straight and then i comb down while still heating. once it looks good, i do the cold shot to lock it in. it can still be a bit puffy on the sides but will relax shortly after, at least for me. i feel like the beard oil is key, find one that works well with your beard

I've got another heated brush, which works remarkably well for what it cost me, ie not a lot. I've found it works best if you run it through your beard real slow, so the heated blades stay longer in the beard, if you know what I mean. Having said that, it's probably time to go out and buy a blow dryer, I like the look of your results with that. Thanks for another informative video!

For the last week I’ve been using both a blow dryer and touching up any fly-always with a beard straightening comb. Because I have an all white beard, I’ve dialed the temperature down on the blow dryer and use two bars on the straightening comb because I was experiencing some yellowing of my beard if I go above three bars. I treat my beard with coconut and apricot oil when I get out of the shower. Would that create an issue?

Awesome video-I Wash beard - Pat dry beard 80-90% - apply beard oil and let set for 5 minutes- blow dry medium heat through out beard and under beard- run cold shot from blow dryer and then use heated brush on setting 320 no more- use only on puffy parts- I use only on sides and mustache- and beard will look amazing. Got this method through Dan C and have been doing well over a year and routine takes about 10 minutes- every morning and out the door. Ty for sharing detailed video.

I've been using a heated brush for years. I have a short-medium length beard and I find a combination of using a beard oil or butter right after helps to make it look more natural with less overly-straight parts and less flyaways. Highly recommend. I wouldn't use it every day though, too much heat probably isn't too good for the hair.

Hello I'm a black dude with 'nappy' curly hair. So as of now i'm using the heated brush method. Trying to keep a long story short. As a kid growing up around and was raised by a lot of females. I eventually got tired of hearing that blow dryer sound. So when I got old enough to grow long enough facial hair. Coupled with bad advice from the women in my family. I first started out with the 'smelly' chemical relaxers. But later I realized all I really needed was heat to relax the hair instead. With a brush and hair pick. It Started to straighten out just fine. With the added bonus of using proper beard products. I was able to keep my beard straight and tangle free. Of course till It got wet from washing. Then I just repeat the process to straighten it again. The heated brush works great in this process. Hasn't let me down once, or damaged my beard hair at all. Been using it ever since. It's gotten to a point now in length where I like to braided from time to time.

Awesome video! I love how much time you put into your work. I’ve only tried a blow dryer once. I wasn’t too thrilled with how hot it made me. 😂 I prefer the heated brush. Specifically, the Aberlite Pro. My beard is naturally a kinky mess. I prep my beard by getting it nice and wet, then dry it about 75%. I add oil, wait a few minutes, then go to town for about 10 or so minutes. Once I get it all straightened at 340°, I lower it to 280° and come up from the back of the beard and utilize my hand on the front as a backboard. This helps get rid of that collapsed look.

Great vid, thanks for the tips! My current system is to towel dry after a shower, apply beard oil, then use a blow dryer and carbon comb - my beard is long and full but I can still run a comb through it thanks to the oil warming up and going slowly. Quick question - Should you always use max heat on blow dryer? I've always used medium so as to avoid nuking my beard every day. Thanks for the insight anyhow, I didn't know cool air helps hold the form after the heat, I'll give that a try

It really depends on how curly/resistant it is. The more heat the more it will smooth the hair out… but the more it will damage the hair too.

@@mattyconradgrooming so it's a balancing act... I guess the same is true for tension on the hair whilst straightening - finer comb/bristles vs. how much tension it takes to pull hairs out. Cheers for the info

Hi, I have a question. Since my chemo my beard has grown back, but it seems to cover my chin and cheeks less than it did before, causing my chin and cheeks to be more visible through the beard. Is there any way to kind of help this thicken up again, or am I just out of luck? haha
@mattyconradgrooming
@mattyconradgrooming 4 месяца назад
How long has it been? Hair can definitely grow back differently after chemo therapy…. There are sprays and powders you can use to give it a thicker look but you might just need to give it a bit more time to recover.

@@mattyconradgrooming been about 6 months or so. The length is back. I'll give it some more time and see if it gets any thicker. Thanks for the reply!

I feel like the heated beard brush is better for shorter beards.

i have a really sparse beard on my cheeks, so if i straighten my facial hair it looks really bad, since all the holes are more visible (the curls kind of cover up a bit). Going for the 3rd month, but really thinking about shavin'it :/

Like I mentioned at the end. It’s not always the best option.

Hi Matty, great video. I wonder, assuming you don't have curly hair, what does hair and skin colour have for an effect on styling. As I'm a blonde with a white skin I sometimes feel that you kind a notice the flaws of your styling more than you do with contrasting skin and haircolour.

So heating beard is not harmful at all? I am still a little afraid for using heating tools to heat the beard hair, I thought it could cause beard to break
@mattyconradgrooming
@mattyconradgrooming 3 месяца назад
Oh, it’s definitely harmful… But probably not to the point of breakage. It will just dry it out which is manageable with decent care products

I have used blowdryer a few times but since i have a very narrow diamond face shape it looks extremely stupid laying flat on my face.
@mattyconradgrooming

Yeah that’s exactly right… for a diamond shaped face you want more fullness.

The problem i have is that my beard is grey and grey hair is a totally different beast to tame,hair dryers dont have an effect,it sticks out whatever i do or put on it
@mattyconradgrooming
@mattyconradgrooming 4 месяца назад
Grey hair is often very coarse and resistant. More heat is required.

I think it would be extra handsome if you cut your beard nearer to jaw line and little longer from center. Not lumber jack style. But I get it if you like it that style

Eveeyone is raving about these heated brushes but i still dont see why honestly. The blow dryer still seems better to me. I use a blow dryer and im still not sold on these heated brushes. Guess im just gonna have to get one and try it for myself.

yo, hold up, so you're telling me that super-dry stuff goes into a dry beard and holds down the fly aways? i shower at night, apply oil, style and sleep a few hours later. the problem with traditional beeswax/oil based balm is you need to apply to a damp beard. and we know you can't re-wet the beard or else the styling unravels, so that stuff would be a game changer. am i right to assume this?

I find they work better with the beard still a bit damp. I let the brush heat up while washing the beard, towel dry and then immediately hot brush it.
