If you know how to throw, you don't have to get rid of your opponent's lapel grip.

Great technique, but what about stripping a grip from the ground? One of my biggest issues is when I'm in someone's guard and they just lapel grip me and work up from there. Also, how does one break a deep lapel grip, like grabbing up behind the neck (i.e. 1/2 of a basic ghi choke)?

your using both hands, all u have is your feet. your opponent however has another hand and 2 feet, u need to think what if he had a knife in his other hand, ur dead.

why do martial arts if ur going to simply use it as a sport, Im not talking about ufc. but what if somebody grabbed ur shirt in a lapel grab and had a knife

Its a great technique, but if you compete, a two handed break is a shido

I got into BJJ both as a hobby/sport and because I figured every guy should know how to defend himself. The more I've practiced and trained, the more you realize the limitations of martial arts on the street. I may be good at submissions and takedowns, but that wouldn't help much against 5 people. BJJ is an awesome and almost unbeatable style for one-on-one confrontations, but that doesn't make it smart to fight a knife with your bare hands.

There is no practical way to fight more than one person at a time unarmed if your opponents aren’t 5th graders. As soon as you attack one the other hits you over the head, takes you down, or gets you in a choke. Unfortunately that’s the reality.

Yeah. If you know hot to use a knife then it's hard to lose, even against a martial artist, but I feel like a lot of people who engage in completely unprovoked attacks often lack what seem like basic fighting abilities, so martial arts are pretty useful. I know that 2 girls that were in my Judo club alone have used Judo to protect themselves. Actually, I believe in both cases, after the throw the guys were done...they didn't try to keep attacking.

People need to relax and accept the video for what it is, a teaching aid, not a life saving technique for the mean streets of *insert name of local city here* This technique is obviously for sport, not street. Much the same as karate/TKD competition sparring being mostly useless on the street, so is this, neither are meant to be. It's a chess-like game of wills and technique, not fighting. At any point in this video Stephan would of punched if demonstrating self defense.
@underdg22
@underdg22 11 лет назад
Anyone who practices martial arts purely for self-defense instead of as a sport needs to start using their brain more. The odds of injury training a martial art are much higher than the odds of getting hurt or robbed on the street. Plus does anyone think kicks, punches and chokes are good weapons against knives or guns?

Done this before and it works well on a gi but not so well on a short or jacket. It can work but a training partner of mine ended up getting a ripped shirt The other problem is because it is only really effective on a gi, it can take too long to release the grip.
@aznravenflame
@aznravenflame 11 лет назад
First, that is a situation. Second, people do martial arts for sports all the time. Not everyone wants to fight in the street or stay in a bad neighbourhood. I have never used martial arts in safe Singapore.

dude there are hundreds maybe thousands of techniques in jiu jitsu. and i assure you a world champion jiu jitsu practitioner would not use this technique in countering someone who just grabbed his/her shirt lol

Its ok. I have a judo mind too. This video and the other one is NOT exactly "kumikata 101" per se. But at least, it will give beginners a head start into the grip fighting game. Man, I just wish Rhadi Ferguson was here!
@FlashySenap

The way I see it, training and competing is not really the same thing. In a Dojo you train your body but when competing you're training your mind. Almost the same emotions you see when you're confronting a hostile person in the real world, you feel when you step onto the mat facing an opponent you, in most cases haven't seen before. It offers the ability to work under pressure and to handle your emotions so that the required techniques can be allowed to be used more efficient.

I can see the technique works in terms of removing his hand from your lapel but im not sure how comfortable i would be in committing 2 hands to his 1 hand, because he still has the other hand free to strike, seems like you are wide open to take a punch and he is free to deliver it as soon as both hands are used against one hand. i could be wrong but it seems slightly illogical...
@sparkyk24
@sparkyk24 11 лет назад
Also, some martial arts are strictly non-violent. For example, some monks or other people (including Jet Li) will never fight back, even when attacked, but do martial arts to stay in shape, competition, and for discipline and a strong mind.

Is that already in the new rules sanctioned by the IJF for 2013? I still see Judokas breaking a lapel grip with 2 hands during tournaments.

@matreyia
@matreyia 11 лет назад
this is grappling, not street combat. In the street, you should not even pay attention to the grip. If anyone is foolish enough to grab your shirt and sacrifice his arm/hand to engage in a grip, simply palm, punch or dart your fingers into his eyes. Then run. A classic Wing Chun solution which is not usable in sports combat with rules.

Sport Judo has some pretty stringent rules. At the end of the day it's not always about using the techniques to the T as much as giving you the techniques to open oppurtunities for yourself.

how about a key lock on that grip? i doubt somebody would be that dumb to hold a grip like that.
@philoalethia
@philoalethia 10 лет назад
Nope. A good key lock requires control of at least the upper body. You don't have that while standing. Also, no one just stands there and holds the grip. They get the grip and then use it to drag you to the ground, do a throw, etc.
@BandakaKush

This is sport application. In the streets, if someone were to grab your jacket or shirt like that you could do a standing armlock instead.

Couldn't you just tuck your head underneath his arm and go for a judo throw.
@philoalethia
@philoalethia 10 лет назад
It often looks like you could do so, but having been on both the receiving and delivering end of this, it can be very hard to duck under a strong lapel grip. Also, ducking under -- which is often done to try to escape a cross-grip -- makes you vulnerable to other serious attacks.

Now how do we apply this when the opponent would respond with a punch to face and really just trying to destroy you while starting with intimidation?
@cybercop0059
@cybercop0059 11 лет назад
Really would not be able to escape it. Say the world strongest man grabs you. You will not escape his grip. You will have to punch him in the weak spot or somewhere else to stun him. But you will not be able to escape his grip.
@Presence_o_Mind
@Presence_o_Mind 7 лет назад
Why the hell would you be trying the roll with the world's strongest man? Gtfo of there! Lol. Smh.
@chrisc2671
@chrisc2671 6 лет назад
Yeah, you are right man, absolutely. Such a good point. Say you're walking to the local shop to get some milk in your Gi and the strongest man in the world grabs your lapel you might have trouble getting his grip off. But most of the time when you wear your Gi you are fighting people in your weight division.
@MaxLohMusic
@MaxLohMusic 6 лет назад
Really would not work either, Kamen. Let's say one day the world's most pain-resistant man, winner of Guinness World Records, for whatever reason decides to assault you out of the blue. Your punches in his "weak spots" will not register and you will not be able to escape his hugs.
