By far the best video on Sumo! He teaches concept, setup and execution in less than 3 mins vs the 20+ min other videos out there on the Sumo Deadlift. Great vid!
Everybody talks about the benefits of pulling sumo, but I have to say as a person with long limbs and a short torso that even if I practiced sumo for a ridiculous amount of time, I will always pull more conventionally. Your individual bone structure plays a huge role in choosing your deadlift stance.
Nostradingus Yes, but you should pull conventional because sumo will get you GREAT carry over, even if your sumo is way less then your conventional, it will make your conventional go up.
I can't speak for others, but for me I don't think sumo is a accessory for the squat or conventional. I am personally much stronger at sumo than conventional, but it is really hard on my hips and groin so I only pull sumo once every two to three weeks. I focus on snatch grip deads and stiff legs to build my sumo. I just feel personally sumo fucks with my squat to much to us it as an accessory.
Bulking dude Yeah especially if you squat with alot of hips, it will mess with your other lift that uses the same muscles there is no question about it.
As I write this, I'm watching this video as I'm in the gym, learning how to sumo for the first time. I'll start light, as you recommend. Very educational; thanks very much!
This is how I deadlift been doing it for years. I am 6'3 and this lift actually saves a lot pf wear and tear on my back. On some jobs when heavy lifting is required they teach you wide stance back straight. Sumo style helps you maintain your center of gravity better and you use more of your legs rather than your back but sumo is not for everyone.
I agree. Im 17 and have been working out for 3 weeks now. I tried sumo first time today and when i failed a normal 130 kg deadlift i went straight for sumo and got it up quite easy. Idk if its because i have very long legs and arms with a short torso but it just felt reqlly nice
From my point of view Larry truly knows what he's talkin' about. This particular day I trained exactly the same exercise; it's amazing how much your legs - hamstrings - need to focus on that fast-schock movement when you go up. And I just find myself enjoying' this exercise. Thanks a lot for showin' us all those tips you mentioned.
At my high school, they pretty much make us do sumo deadlift or trap-bar deadlift. Very rarely will we be assigned to do a normal conventional deadlift. Sumo deadlift has worked great for me so far, and I recommend any lifter to try it out.
I always do a sumo deadlift with a straight back as it is much easier on my back. 90% of the videos on you tube emphasize bending forward to execute the movement. This video validates what I'm doing is still effective. Thank You for posting...👍🙏
Played this video during my ME deadlift session instead of music and PR'ed. I cannot thank Larry and this channel enough for helping me break a plateau. The simultaneous breathing and tension stopped me from yanking and falling forward. His elaboration on feeling partial tension before the lift greatly improved my start.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on sumos, this is how I do them but many videos I’ve seen on RU-vid the body isn’t kept as upright and looks more similar to a conventional deadlift in terms of how the back looks. Good to see this version though as I think this takes the weight off the back
he's definitely telling you some real wisdom by not rushing it..... once you get injuries you're not the same... work it up slow and gradual nothing will stop you
@@ryansisco2492 my body type is completely wrong for conventional, my is completely horizontal in my deadlift set up which makes it really difficult for my back
Thanks so much. Conventional deadlift I couldn’t do correctly no matter how much I watched videos and trained it. I still haven’t got sumo down perfect but I’m repping more weight and it’s so much better on my back. Only difference is my sticking point went from getting off the floor to locking it out at the top
Thank you for this video. My form was shit and I was stuck around 450 max on deadlift 485 conventionalI could 15 rep 405 but my max just wasn't improving. My hamstring was also hurting every deadlift session Realized something must be wrong. Took 2 weeks off and saw this video. Went to the gym a week ago and hit 500. Never knew my form sucked so bad but after one video I increased my max 50 lbs due to my form. Deadlifted again today and pulled 500 for a triple... once again. Thank you for this video. On my way to a new goal of a 600 lb deadlift
Great video and great advice , thank you very much , this has helped me immensely in getting the lift right enabling me to lift heavy with proper form and minimal risk of injury
I came back to this vid 11 months later and i decided to sumo deadlift a week ago and surprisingly ive been doing everything he said well except the HUGE breath. Natural lifters instinct can save you sometimes haha
I used to pull sumo all the time or I'd cycle between sumo and conv just to work on both but this year I noticed my conv lift started to smoke my sumo. So now I just keep pulling conv it got me into the 400 club 😊
Just found this video. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I agree with I’m sure the whole thread when I say: After seeing this video I would want you as my coach. Masterclass level.
I use way too much lower back in conventional deadlift and I am not really properly using my legs, do you guys think doing sumo deadlifts will help me improve my leg activation and concentrate more on my legs just by the nature of the motion ? Please help!!
Just watched Dan Green's video, he mentioned 3 common sumo mistakes one of them is hip(sit back too mch)too low which is exactly what he's doing in this video.
Bart Kwan Why is he using straps? Does he do all his training with straps until peaking for a meet? I've seen a lot of pro's using straps, but than read the exact opposite
my lower back is a bit messed up from spending my teens sitting all the time and working as a taxi driver so this really spares my lower back from conventional(yes i keep my back straight i've had competitive lifters comment that it's fine but it just ain't right for me)
bluex610 Im 6,2 and regular deadlift never felt right because my knees where always in the way. So ive been doing sumo pretty much since I started lifting
