Breaststroke is arguably the most challenging stroke to swim correctly, which is why so many swimmers do not execute the correct breaststroke technique. Learn how to fix some common mistakes so you can swim as fast as Adam Peaty!

You wouldn't believe how many videos I have watched trying to get a simple answer to the change over from pull to kick. This video has both the best analysis I have seen so far due to the slow down of Peaty's pull and a logical explanation of how and when the kick begins. I also like how you were able to demonstrate the dropped bs raised hips. It makes your video a good one for the beginner swimmers that I coach. Thank you very much.

I’ve been a breast stroke swimmer all my life (56y :-) ). This all makes very much sense to me. I did not receive much professional training in my time. When I go swimming, I often keep speed with the crawl swimmers next to me. When I look at this, I understand why. One tip, to keep my hips high, I try to touch the water surface, from beneath, with my heels, during the glide phase. Then I know sure that I’m hanging horizontal.

You´re the only one who made me understand why I am sinking by talking about the hips and the core. Thanks! I´ll try to keep your tips in mind. :)

I'm 37 now and competed as a breaststroke specialist all through my youth. I think there is something intrinsically different about powerful breaststrokers, as they tend to be very average at other strokes, whereas fly and freestyle swimmers often struggle with this discipline

Thank you so much....this helps a lot. Breast stroke was my best when I was younger...but it was different then. I wasn't allowed to do it for a few years so now I can learn it over again without the bad habits. We never raised our heads out of the water that much so it is something to get used to. Just enough to get a breath and no more

Hi, thanks for the video. I'm a beginner, when I try to swim this technique I have difficulty staying under the water, in a side view I see that my head does not go fully into the water, but only up to the end of the forehead...even when I try to dive and swim under the surface of the water, I very quickly float and rise up, why is it happening?
@ellajames8666
@ellajames8666 9 месяцев назад
Hi! I’m not sure if you still need help, since it’s 4 months later, but there’s a drill that we called “knock knock drill” that might help with this. After you shoot your arms forward, while your arms are fully extended, knock your head once on each of your arms. Your head should be hitting your arms just at or just behind the ears. Then finish the normal breaststroke pull and kick and “knock knock” again on the next stroke. This helps train the proper head position in breaststroke, which is having your arms just at/just behind the ears during the glide. Our bodies follow our heads when we’re swimming, so training your head position may help your body stay in the water a bit better. (I swam competitively for 10 years. My coach made us do this drill a lot when I was first starting out.) Hope this helps!

I wanna say something, breastroke is not the weakest stroke, its just the slowest compared to the other 3, its actually the most explosive stroke, if you compare it to the other 3 you need more explosive power specially for the kick

@MaxSwims
@MaxSwims Год назад
This is quite a rare issue because most people struggle to get near the surface. You’re probably dropping your head too far down, which makes the hips/feet raise too much. Experiment with how far you need to lower your head until you find a good balance 👍🏼
@20shourya
@20shourya Год назад
@@MaxSwims thanks for the advice, yes I suspect it was due to a delay between having my arms completely streamlined and then kicking which would mean that the posterior would also be quite close to the surface.

@PoisonedFirefly

Actually the kick you suggest causes a lot of knee damage. It's safer to open your knees and pull the legs upwards. It's less damaging on the knee joint and a more natural movement. Especially for those who are doing normal training.

These are good points, but disagree on breaststroke being the most technical. The breaststroke is the easiest stroke, because the kick is more powerful, so you can work with both your legs and your hands. With front crawl, the flutter kick is absolutely rubbish for a beginner, so they get tired quickly. Trudgen stroke is then a better solution and synergises with learning the breaststroke kick. Also for back crawl, I'd replace it with elementary backstroke. Wayy more efficient..

Well i must admit, of all those years of swimming, i found the guy doing wrong breast stroke even good😂😂 cause the whole time his nose was above water and there was not a single splash in whole stoke, so usage wise, if we want to swim why would anyone chose the slowest stroke, but i found that first guy swimming too effortlessly and quietly and that is all about swimming. Yes if we want to compete in breaststroke, we should follow the correct technique only

I never could swim breast stroke. My feet will not turn out enough to get any propulsion from my kick. Scissor kick works better, but never liked the kick and glide. Just too inefficient. I do like the over arm side stroke better, in part because it is a lot faster than breast stroke. Only record in existence was set by a Brit, Jack Tyre in 1895, so over 125 years ago. He swam 100 yards in 1:02,5, The OSS was dropped from competition prior to the 1900 Olympics in favor of the much slower breast stroke, because it was more gentlemanly because there was less splashing. Now, unfortunately, it has been pretty much forgotten.....

LIE prone, head only goes up and down, hands go under the body, NOT out to the side. I notice the swimmers hardly move forward with this stupid modern stroke of lifting up and diving. what a waste of energy. prone is more efficient.

wait, so.... the hands are supposed to do only those little arcs? from 12:00 to 9:15 position and then be tucked below the body? I always though I am supposed to do bigger arc, to let's say 7:25 position and then tuck them below. It seems strange to me that it stops that soon... Because I thought that the biggest efficiency is when your arms are perpendicular to the body (e.g. from 10:10 do 8:20 or whatever) because then you are pushing the water straight back (no pushing the water sideways like in the earlier phases), so it pushes you forward the most. I have never liked breaststroke and never been good at it, so I am obviously not doing it right, but the presented hand movement in the video makes even less sense to me...
@jakem834
@jakem834 Месяц назад
@@panda4247 if you keep your arms back too long, you lose efficiency. If your pull is strong enough, you can go to that 9:15 position and quickly bring them back for the next stroke
