I think this is the best breaststroke video I've seen - thank you ! I started lap swimming about 4 years ago in my late 50's - 1:45 / 100 yd breaststroke is a good time for me right now - usually about 7 or 8 strokes after the pullout. Your slow motion replays and annotations are really nice.

Clear analysis - with nice start and stop on the video - so that the viewer can really digest and remember what you are talking about. I like that you point out your own imperfections - relatable - though you are clearly very strong and do a lot of things quite well! Again - terrific use of video - and you give the viewer time to absorb what you are talking about. Thank you.

Great explanation! Really easy to see how much timing effects the stroke. Never thought how much drag was being done by pulling too far back. Thanks!!

for 25 meters, I do 12 - 13 kicks. I have been swimming for about 68 years now, and my freestyle is pretty good, but years ago my instructor said I was not coordinated enough for the breast stroke. LOL, so she taught me the side stroke. Well, nobody swims the side stroke any more, so in Masters swimming I started to work on my breast stroke and I can do it now, it's not very good, so thanks for the instruction. I have more to work on now.

Hey Fares! Thanks for the video, very insightful. Atm I'm training in a 20-meter pool and I'm doing 4-7 pulls depending on the speed and the fatigue level. And since I can do 50 in like 35 seconds, the difference in my pull (in-)efficiency versus yours is obvious. Think my main issue is the leg kick, as I'm totally inflexible and cannot maintain a narrow sharp kick. Also I have been training since last June though, so got ways to improve :)

I really liked this breakdown. I just had Masters Provincials this weekend and swam :41 for the 50 and 1:32 for the 100 (SCM). Luckily I had a video of my 50 and can really see where I can improve, especially in head position. I am from the old-school "can't put your head under the water" days from the 70's, so it is a hard thing to unlearn. Oh, 8-9 strokes for 25m after pullout. I'd love to go sub-1:20 with some technique refinement.

OMG - I can't wait to try this. Have been swimming for a couple of years now after a few lessons and I generally accomplish the 25 m length in 14 strokes! I'm pretty sure I was taught to lower my knees for the kick as I initiate the pull. At 68 and osteoporotic, I can't do the flip at the end of the lane and had pretty much accepted that 14 strokes was going to be the best I could do. Hmmmm...maybe not!

Great tips coach! I will try them tomorrow when I get into pool. I don’t kick off wall hard because the pool length is perhaps 20m. I do soft kick off and take about 9 strokes to get to the other end not rushing float time. Last year around the same time it took me 15 to do the same lap LOL. I was doing breaststroke all wrong.

Great video and analysis! I use swimming breaststroke as my daily cardio for the past 12 years. 1KM in a 25M pool, no rest and finish in 25 minutes; used to be 23 minutes a few years back but aging doesn't help (turning 60 this year). The first 3 to 4 pool length I can finish each at 11 strokes but it gradually goes up as fatigue kicks in gradually. For the last pool length its usually 14 but won't get any higher than that. Though I'm not a competitive swimmer but I still want to improve as having a goal is much more fun than just swimming aimlessly. I will definitely try your technics to try to reduce the number of strokes per length. Thanks!

With little kids, I have them swim breaststroke with a pool noodle under their arm pits. this helps them to keep their arms forward. Also with little kids, I have them do the 2 kicks, 1 pull drill. I set the challenge up for them to make it to the other end of the pool (25y) with 10 or less kicks. The winner gets an ice cream token or swim cap. Great info!

Hey Fares and thanks for another excellent tuition video. At 73yrs I'm just getting back into swimming - used to swim for my local club as a young man.. Problem I have with the kick is because of all those years taught to kick at the same time as the arm recovery.. I find it hard to wait till the arms are out front. But with your video I can now imagine having a cord from each hand to my heels. So when the arms begin the forward recovery, the heels would be drawn towards the butt. It'll take time to get out of the old ways but I'll certainly persevere.

Nice analysis. When I was in college (late 70's) we were not allowed to dip our heads fully underwater so we puffed up our caps to try to prevent DQs. We essentially did the "long glide" drills in practice dipping our heads fully under and we could sense the currently accepted fact that the gliding streamline was the fast part of the stroke. Since the rules required a tip of the cap above water, we often had an upward "rake" to our body positions in meets. It hurt our speed and mostly our endurance as the extra drag was very evident by the end of a 200 BR, (especially LC). Now in practice I do 4-5 strokes/25 yd (after pull out) and can feel the smooth advantage of the long glide. When I race (rarely in Masters), I typically revert to old form in the 50/100 but maybe I would get better with more training/better discipline or better training/more discipline. I do not do the 200 anymore as it causes nausea, vomiting, ridicule, and psychological trauma.

Thank you for the video. I have a question regarding the pull-out. I learn the pull-out from your channel, but whatever I do (measured not in meters, but in seconds) is max 5 seconds duration of the whole process pull and the first moment the head is out of the water to check the clock on the wall in front. Counting the time on this video you do something like around 7-8 seconds pull-out process and then 5 strokes. I do 5-second pull + 8 strokes for a personal record of 25 seconds for a 25-meter pool, (normally I even do between 25-30, if I do 100m at once) compared with your results are not good. I'm afraid that I don't do the pull-out very well because if I push from the wall and start the strokes immediately, I have the same timing of 25 seconds for a 25-meter pool with maybe 10-12 strokes. I know that there are many other details to improve, like the kick and pull strength, but am very curious about the pull-out, and why the final results in seconds are the same if I pull out or I skip it. Definitely, I pull too back as you show is wrong, so will work on correcting this. Thank you in advance!

I'm always trying to work on my breaststroke because I have just never been much good at it. When I try a 50m sprint it takes 42s in a race, and in training at least a few seconds slower. One thing I noticed is the timing of your kick. You are already dropping back down into the water and almost in streamline before your knees even start to bend to begin the kick's recovery. You probably do this without even having to think about it, but when would you suggest to start the bending of the knees (based on what's happening at the front of the stroke)? I think I bend my knees too early and I'm ready to start the kicking action when I am near the top of the pull. Also, you bend your legs a lot compared to most modern breaststrokers. Just an observation that I thought might be costing you a bit of time, due to possible extra resistance, and an increase in time to perform the kick, maybe with limited benefit.

Hi. Thanks for the insights. I do five strokes for 25m but I would be slower than 38" on 50 meters. If I want to be faster, I have to make more strokes and glide less. How to keep that 5 strokes yet be fast at the same time? Increase muscle strength? Thanks for your advice.

Love your videos, really great. My problem is, that I am so flat in the water that sometimes my kick goes out of the water. I lose a lot of momentum in the glide phase. If i sprint in a 50m pool I can do max 1:56 for 100m. Usually I try to go for 1.5-2k straight on a 2:25 pace. But it feels I could do much better…

11-14 strokes (depending on how tired I am), but I have never done a full stroke and dolphin kick after push of the wall so I probably need less. I have a question about breathing, I have a tendency to hold the air and only exhale when I start pulling, is it normal? It looks like you are doing it as well, with me it often leads to running out of air as I am not able to exhale everything before I inhale so every few strokes I need to exhale as soon as I get into the water and I lose momentum. At the age of 40, I start development classes next Friday, yay :)

You mentioned that swimming breaststroke should be fast. My question is, if I'm swimming for general fitness or health benefit and not for competing (i.e. would prefer swimming longer distances than short but more intense) what would your advice be? Noting that I'm also fairly new to swimming so my fitness is pretty poor at this stage, I just managed to be able to swim 300m with breaststroke without taking a long break (25m pool), I still take like a 2-3 second break at the end of every lap.

My pullout is barely 5meters. I then need 10 pulls for 25m in total. So....can we know your pullout distance please? That compares the meters per pull depending on the distance left. Mine is about 2m per pull/kick. I can't keep my breath well and after 500m I really struggle with the pullout as I feel out of breath and shoot up faster. Gasp. So then it becomes 11 pulls.

Hey Fares, I’m swimming at my club champs this evening. 100 free 50 fly and 100 breast. How should I pace the 100 breast? Thanks Izzi

Could you please do a video on how to best swim breaststroke over a long distance, like the 3.8km of an Ironman Triathlon? What is the best energy saving/efficient, yet not too slow technique, stroke count, time of glide etc. Thanks.

Hi there! Swimming freestyle is actually the most efficient way to swim, and I'd recommend that over any other stroke in a long distance race. If you're looking to improve your breaststroke, check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Elb2uTpW7qQ.html

@@FaresKsebati Thanks. Hm, unfortunately I can‘t swim freestyle as I am not able to turn my head sideways that much in both directions due to an accident in the past which limits the rotation of my head. Therefore I can only do breaststroke, but I am training for an Ironman Triathlon in July this year. That is why I asked.

2:07 is my average, but i swimm only long distances. Usualy 2000 to 3000 meter 3 to 5 times a week, so 80 to 120 lanes. Stroke count is pretty high, around 12 to 15. I could do much less or swimm much faster on short distance, but so, it is a pretty good cardio 😅

Hey I’ve been stuck at 1:02 for a long time now. I was wondering what tips you have for getting under a minute in the 100 breast 🧐

I just started attempting the breast stroke. I need a lot more practice (and instruction) on my kick. When practicing the kick on my back, I hardly move at all and may even be going backwards! 😳

How many strokes is good for a 25 metre pool . Consider swimming for fitness ( not for sports )

What would you say about a time of 1:19 on 100m m and 37.04 on 50m (a 25mpool) for a 12 year? He has problems in underwater and turns, so his time is almost the same in a 50m pool.

I have my student 11 years old 50 39, 100 1.24 , 200 2.56 .. As a coach I have noticed one thing.. Breast strikers are born , not made.. Don’t get confused with my statement.. I mean few kids have naturally flicking ( whipped) motion of kick and they excel in 100, 200 breast.. 50 breast is more of pull and tempo game..

@@ashishchaudhary2850 Totally agree that talent is very important for breaststroke. It's the one stroke where you can be bad at every other stroke, but hardly train and just turn up and be competitive in a breaststroke race because you are just good at it.

I do 6 strokes per 25m, or 7 if I'm doing a 50m fast (which is not fast at all)
