Everybody loves a good waterfall image with a long exposure, but I'm here to show you how to capture more detail and motion in that fascinating tumble of white water.

I have recently subscribed to your channel. I watch Thomas Heaton often and a few others. I enjoy that you often include others in your videos and of course your humor! Not only do I get some very nice photography content, it's presentation is fun and entertaining. The instruction in this video was clear to the point complete enough to easily follow, yet didn't drag on, to me a winning combination. Thank you for your efforts and sharing your passion.

It's been pissing it down for a few days here in New Hampshire - got to get out over the weekend to a few of my local favourite falls. All the best - keep em coming. Going home to Liverpool and North Wales in a few weeks - even though some of the North Wales falls are brilliant, not sure I'll better your shots here...

Hi Gavin, I see people have already reamed you for using the eraser tool instead of masking. Here's a little tip to help when you're stacking your layers. If you hold down the shift key while dragging from one window to another the new layer will align perfectly with the original layer if they're both the same size. Thanks for all the great info and laugh out loud fun...cheers mate!
@stevelyles

Great image .... l wouldn’t recommend the destructive workflow of the erase tool .... a layer mask allows for the same adjustments which could be further fine tuned at any time .... regardless your videos are bloody brilliant 👍😂♥️

Terrific vlog, Gavin - I'm new to this processing lark so could you tell me whether I should put my raw files through Adobe camera raw before importing into Lightroom? Can you stack photo's in Lightroom (Classic) or does it have to be done in Photoshop? Thanks.

Enjoyed the video. Just wondered why you did not use a layer mask instead of the eraser. I like the texture you get with 1/8 s which would be my preference for fast water as well. Did you consider taking the shot in one frame with a higher iso.

Gavin, have you ever been to Sol Duc falls in Washington State? if not it’s a great opportunity for someone that loves waterfalls as much as you. I was there in 1994 but have not been back since. I shot the falls on film at the time and went for a classic view of the falls and then a view of the moss covered branches over the top of the falls. i think you would enjoy it.

I use Raw Therapy on Linux and have been meaning to find out how to combine shots in that software. Must get round to it.
@garretmkiii
@garretmkiii 4 года назад
RT is very limited, but gloriously easy to use. GIMP is much more powerful software for combining photos, has all those fancy features like luminosity masking, yadda yadda... If you've gotten bored with RT, try Darktable for your raw development. Many more features than RT, such as masking and a large variety of processes you can run on your images. If you're looking for a native Linux HDR program, I've been using Luminosity HDR for a couple weeks and have to say it's confusing AF. Lots of options, lots of potential results, but I'm not too sure which way is up yet. Like most linux software, it's powerful, but the interface is kind of trash.

Awesome work and great result. Try using a mask and edit the mask to blend your images as opposed to erasing your original image. Makes it easier to revisit your edit and make adjustments later on. As your processing skills improve a few years down the track you may want to re-edit some of your previous photos. Will save you some time. If the image is complex then also try using luminosity masks if a manual edit is too hard. "LOOK AT THAT BUSINESS" < love it!!
@fototripper
@fototripper 5 лет назад
I often use layer and luminosity masks Bruce but I'd rather do a complete re-edit than revisit an edit. From all the workshops that I've taught I still find that some people have difficulty with the concept of layer masks but they never have difficulty with the Erase tool. Besides, I've got to leave something to talk about in my upcoming online photography courses ;)

The eraser tool! Holy smokes! You may want to re-think that little nugget of destructive editing in favor of some good old fashioned masking. Once you erase those pixels they’re gone forever! This is easily one of the best photography channels on the Tube, so tuck that eraser into the bin of forbidden tools and let it collect dust along with film photography and streak-marked underwear. . .

@@fototripper Well, all the parts you erased are gone. Sure...they will be there in the other file, but it makes no sense to switch between files if it's not needed. So...no reason NOT to go with masks, as the results are exactly the same. But masks gives you the benefit of not erasing actual pixels from your image but hides them. You know I'm right, man. Just use masks ;) It's better to teach others this too ;)
