I'm 52 yrs. old & my DAD taught me this knot, but he called it a BARRLE KNOT.
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 6 лет назад
+John Vanyo Sr, I can see why he called it that,, it does look like a barrel. This knot is actually the single improved-clinch knot. There is a double improved-clinch knot where instead of taking the single tag end of the line through the hook, you double it over and tie the same knot. Not really sure if it is stronger. Thanks for watching!

The barrel (or Blood) knot is used to the two lines together. Real useful after a line break to get back fishing quick.

My dad used rubber bands as a stop on slip corks, it worked but you needed to keep the rubber band and line wet when you slipped it up or down.

5 years later, here I am watching your video, Davis. Thank you for the nice tutorial that actually shows it works. I don't have a boat; I can't afford one BUT I appreciate that you catch some good fish I am salivating right now. Scale, gut, make a few slits on both sides and smother them with turmeric powder and sugar and deep fry them. Oolala! Now I'm going to watch your latest video to see how you look and sound like fast forward 5 years. 😊 Happy fishing from Warren, Pennsylvania, Davis!

I used to bobber-fish for Northern with my Dad. We used the round bobbers held on by wire loops and turn the wire to the side so the bobber would slip but I could never figure out how to use those thru-the-bobber type. Back then, 1960's, we didn't have pre-tied knots we tied on tiny rubber bands. It worked. Now I know this way, thanks so much 60 yo Daddy's little girl,

Wow...259 dislikes by idiots commenting on his vid telling him how to do 'better' what he just showed us how to do. All of these "experts" giving him advice and thumbs down probably couldn't catch fish if their lives depended on it. By the way, good video brother 👊 I enjoyed it and appreciate the time and effort you took to try and teach others a skill you have learned.

Better to use a swivel to attach a leader with jig. Round swivel won't get stuck in bobber stem. The jig will. Also if you use a lighter test for the leader, when snagged and have to break off the leader line will break and you won't lose your bobber and have to rerig the whole setup.
@stevengonzalez4957
@stevengonzalez4957 Год назад
I have a tip that might be beneficial. One of the best lessons I had learned with crappie fishing (especially using jigs) is using jig heads that are made of light wire. The commercial jig heads (RR and such) use heavy wire. If one is fishing for crappie in brush, light wire jigs are absolutely the best. If the jig gets snagged, you can gently pull the jig loose, without disturbing the crappie gang hanging out down there. Light wire will bend and come unsnagged exponentially easier, resulting in fewer lost jigs, while minimizing the disturbance of the brush pile one is on. Look for some independent jig makers in Texas for those with light wire jigs. I hope this helps, because it worked for me!

Recommendation - use a smaller pencil bobber to minimize the tension the fish feels when it get's on the jig and easier for you to see bobber movement.

Thanks for this video! I did not know how to use those slip bobbers mainly because I always cast and retreive or straight line jig over the side. That is just a really great effective way to get suspended fish. FYI: when I was a kid fishing back in the 60's they would have a knot diagram on all types of product packaging called the "fisherman's knot." It was the "clinch knot" which is now "improved." It always said to make 7 winds around the main line. I still do it. Putting the tag end thru that last loop is the "improvement." Appreciate the time you took sharing a great technique!
@FloppingCrappie

Thank you for watching, i'm glad I could help explain the slip bobber. I still see the knot diagram on some hook packages, but not all companies do that anymore. I wish they would because it does help quite a few fisherman out.

I have found the fused braided lines work every bit as well as monofilament in a spinning rig. And the knots hold better and are easier to tie. I haven't used mono in years. It doesn't tend to spin off the reel in a tangle either.

Super helpful. I'm new to crappie fishing so this helps! You can tie the improved clinch super fast with forceps. Make a loop with the line like normal, but insert the forceps through the loop. Turn the forceps 4-6 times to create the wraps and then grab the tag end with the forceps and pull it through. Then just insert tag through upper loop. Takes 2 seconds to tie it with forceps when you get the hang of it.
@FloppingCrappie

long tag ends will not wind correctly on the reel, and will not feed well through the eyes of the rod. Try trimming then after pulling the knot tight.

you don't need the bead, nor the thread stopper. Just tie on a piece of line to your main line with a uni-knot, the stopper should stop there. My only gripe with the slip bobber is when i fish from shore and drag/jig the jig to shore it gets stuck in the bobber hole. I'm sure the slip bobber technique isn't for shore fishermen, but I like that the bobber can be used as a weed guard when fishing in tullies/reeds.

Good job. It was understandable, and I now know how to use a slip bobber. Was wondering why you had to redo the rig and why you emphasized using artificials and not having to go get bait when at 12:00 minute you clearly have a live minnow.
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 6 лет назад
Kenneth Garrison my bobber stop was slipping so i re-tied a new stop on the line. And the 12:00 minute mark was not a minnow, that a really small crappie that fell off the hook. I can see how you though it was a minnow though. I didn't have any live bait in the boat with me when I filmed this, but I have used minnows on this type of rig. It's just cheaper to use plastics since live bait is sometimes hard to keep for days.

Good video but might I add using a swivel between your main line and a leader. I like using small diameter braided line on my spool (hi vis) that's between 8-10 lb test. The line works its way through the slip bobber much quicker than mono, getting to depth faster. Then tie a swivel with a 6lb fluorocarbon leader. I also like to put a slightly larger bead above the swivel so it doesn't jam into the bottom of the slip bobber. Your jig head (or sinkers and Aberdeen hook) gets tied to the 6lb fluorocarbon. Then if you do get snagged and have to break, you only lose your leader. Your slip rig stays in tact. One last thing, I usually like to double or triple tie the yarn slip and cut the tag ends short to ensure it don't have a chance to jam into the bead.

Thanks for the tutorial. I always just drop the jig, and follow it down with my rod tip, but in deep water, this gets a bit tiresome. Having a slip bobber seems the way to go. I seem to remember there was a way to make your own stoppers with braid and a small coffee straw, but I've never tried it. Again, thanks for the video!

thank you for the informative detailed explanation,,i would think to avoid getting snagged you need to cut the tag ends of that slip knot shorter,,i would also use a swivel between the float and the jig to act as a stopper and less tangle say about a foot away from the jig but i suppose your method works fine so long at the bobber tube dont get inserted in the jig arbor,,but i prefer to use tooth floss to make my own slip knot,forgot how to do it properly though,,been a while but the fishing and crappie season craze is catching on me lol have not been out there in years

If you trim some of that lead off the bottom of that jig and then wrap the shaft with dental floss, and then put some gel glue on the dental floss, and then you slide your jig up on there and hold it for a second. Your jig will stay on much better, and last a lot longer.

Did you say you could also use the polamer knot for vertical jigging?

I dont think I mentioned the polamer knot in this video. The two knots were the improved clinch knot and the loop knot. The loop knot will provide a more lively action to the jig were as the improved clinch knot will give you a better feel of a bite ( I usually use this knot when fishing live bait)

Nice man! Do you ever use minnows or crappie nibbles and can this same set up work for either of these scenarios?

Yes, you can use minnow or crappie nibbles with this setup as well. I would recommend an Aberdeen hook and sit shot if you're using minnows

Moisten that knot before pulling it tight and it will slide down no problem. I usually just put a little spit on it. Keeps friction from forming and won't tweak the line that is creating the knot. Friction can warp and compromise your knot.

I feel like a loop knot would be great for this method. Thanks
