One year ago I uploaded a video called How to train a hawk the first week. In that video I go through my steps on how to train a bird of prey. In this video, one year later, I discuss and go through the steps I take to advance her from that first week and take her from a hawk that just flys round a series of perches, to a hawk that confidently follows on through woodland. Flying a hawk takes a lot of work, and its not just hawks, training and flying a bird of prey can sometimes take weeks, even months of work. Some birds do not even unlock their full potential until after years of flying. Training hawks can be broken down into different steps. Each day for the past week I have been taking these steps and filming them with a brand-new hawk. Hawks are exceedingly popular falconry birds of prey; however, my birds are all used for education rather than hunting. This is not exactly a How to train harris hawks tutorial. This is just the process I take when training birds of prey. If you are not a falconer but are interested in falconry and the training and flying of birds of prey, then consider subscribing for more future videos like this. If you are a falconer and use different methods to what is shown in this video then leave a comment about what you would do differently, I am always up for discussing and trying new training techniques.
If you are planning to get a hawk soon or thinking it might be something for you in the future, then although this video may help, after watching this it does not mean you are ready to go and get and train a bird, there is a lot more that goes into it than this!

I’m glad to hear that, RU-vid auto generates the captions and I don’t think I have control over it so they probably struggle with some words with my accent 😂

Hello, great video. I teach a hawk that he can only hang on his hand for a reward from the front. So he gets used to flying me over. Which is good as a hunting preparation. Free tracking lasts about an hour and has 3 arrivals for a reward. Have a nice day.

uhh I'm planning on buying a falcon and let me know if a 1.10 m x 1.5 m x 1m tethered is enough for a hybrid made of an American kestrel mixed with a peregrine

The first year: You either make or you break the raptor.

Do you usually go on your own during your hawk walks or take a dog or second hawk with you ? She could start hunting 🤔

Usually by myself or with friends, I know she could hunt but I do displays and don’t want to put an actively hunting hawk in an arena

Great video! What other species of raptors can be trained to following on?
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry Год назад
Most species could be trained, Harris hawks are just very natural at it as they are a social species, I unintentionally trained my Eurasian Eagle Owl to follow on while on pest control sites!

How do you avoid screaming in harris hawks. I understand that you avoid feeding in the mews, or feed down a chute. That you reduce weight slowly. That you get them killing and feeding up as soon as possible. Any other tips?

Is a harris hawk enough for a 1.20 m width x 1.5 m length x 1.7 m tall aviary or it could be tethered
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry 2 года назад
I wouldn’t say so, a Harris hawk would need more space than that

Where can you flay a hawk? For example can you fly one in a public park?
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry Год назад
It’s not particularly safe to do so, you need to speak to private land owners and ask permission to fly in a safer environment
@andycampsall3832
@andycampsall3832 Год назад
@@MercerFalconry In your experience are most land owners agreeable and do some charge you?
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry Год назад
I’m good friends with the land owners I fly on, but that’s not how I got the permission, I didn’t know any of them before I asked. None of them charge me but I always make sure to put together a nice basket of things for Christmas

Hi, I've recently become interested in Falconry and would love to start however im not sure where to get one from or whether to get a Imprint or parent reared so i was interested in your opinion as after loving all your videos I feel like you might have an idea of what to do in my case.

@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry 2 года назад
Hi, I would suggest as a beginner to go for a parent reared bird, if a bird is imprinted incorrectly it can lead to some very annoying bad habits, I also thing a parent reared bird will teach you more as a beginner as they are often not as forgiving with training and weight management. To be able to find a breeder I would suggest first finding a falconer local to yourself, or a centre, and asking for help. If you search for the Falconry Hub on Facebook and join it you can put up a post saying your location and that you are interested in learning and would like some help from someone in your area. I hope that helps direct you in the right direction!

Falcons have a completely different style of flight, they go a lot higher up and then stoop down, I don’t train any of my falcons to jump between trees following me, I swing a lure for them to try and catch, following on is really just a Harris hawk behaviour (with some exceptions). A falcon can be trained to wait on but this is where they gain height and stay in the air above you waiting for you to flush prey out. Those dimensions are on the small size, I think you could get away with it but I would make something bigger

Am l the only one suddenly getting these hideous text readings on every yt vid clip? l don't remember opting in to this ridiculous distraction affair, the spelling mistakes are beyond parody.''Harry's Socks'' (Harris's Hawks ) ffs.This is despicable , totally ruining every vid it infects,almost as bad as the banal hipster,totally moronic 'muzak' intrusions,adding zero to the content.
