Bob, best wishes for a safe & enjoyable Thanksgiving! I was running 2 Pro Vap 110's by myself which did speed up treatments but still a lot of hassle measuring out OA charges. I debated trying to run a 3rd but that was just too much to juggle. I tried the Pro Vap EZ 110 and found it MUCH faster than running 2 110's and found that I can get about 70 shots of OA out of it before the nozzle begins to clog. Talking with Larry Welle @ Pro Vap, we tried raising the set temperature from 250 to 270 and the clogging issue improved. I later bumped it to 280 & added exhaust header wrap, and it works well. I see you go in through the entrance with your Pro Vap 110's. I keep an Imirie shim with an upper entrance for ventilation and spacing for food patties. Do you see any advantage or draw backs to discharging the OAV in the upper entrance as opposed to the lower entrance if available? On my double deeps, I discharge an OAV charge in both to ensure maximum coverage. Sure would appreciate your thoughts & opinion on this.

From this video, seems the procedure needs to include tapping the cap when the provap is inverted/inserted, to ensure the charge drops into the bowl at start. Notice at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ACqrvbNJC7w.html

I have tried several methods of OAV treatments. The best year I had wintering was the season I tried a burgess yard fogger. I run around 40 hives. The yard fogger crapped out from the acid eating the pump guts. Oxyvap takes me like an hour to do 5. The provap110 makes it easy again. I can treat a yard with 30 colonies in an hour including drive time getting there. Will be treating this afternoon. I think the yard fogger year was a fluke but it was so easy to treat that I was religious about it. Pick your method but the point is treat religiously. (Often) Another drawback to using the yard fogger is the price of that high octane everclear or gem. (198 proof)

We've had very good luck with OAV treatments in winter when the bees are broodless. It works in the fall also, we just have to do it several times.

What holds the wood entrance reducer in place while you treat? What keeps the ProVap upright?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 4 года назад
The vaporizer and reducer simply sit there. The reducer is a 1/4 x 3/4 strip with a slightly offset hole for the vaporizer tube to go through and sits loosely on the tube and landing board. We have the advantage of a 3/8 entrance which allows the tube to rest up against the underside of the brood box. A 3/4 entrance might work differently and allow the vaporizer to sag to low.

Do you use anything besides OA for mite treatment throughout the year? If so, what and when?

We treated all overwintered colonies with Apivar in late July to early August if mite numbers were close to 1% or more. Splits started with cells in the spring or summer usually have low numbers so maybe not needed. We did two OA treatments in winter when bees were broodless and had zero mites in all alcohol washes until at least mid April. OA treatmeant worked very well. Highly recommended.

Hi Bob, Will this method work with open mesh floors?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 4 года назад
It's not as effective because much of the vapors escape.

Is it safe to have syrup and pollen patties in the hive during treatment?

I'm not an expert on this but because oxalic has been approved for use with honey supers on I would say it's probably OK.

Bob, do you have wasp infestations in your colonies at any time of the year? If so, how do you deal with wasps?

We don't have a problem at this time and generally don't have anything to combat them.

you setting the vap at 229 but I read 315 is optimum and above 370 is poisonous and will kill the bees. do you have any facts on this? I'm working on a tool that uses propane gas no electric and cost about 30 bucks to make. My temperature is running high so I'm trying to redesign the tool to get it in the correct range but there is not much information out there on this subject.

The temperature readings seen in this video are in Celsius. Converted to Fahrenheit it would seem to be to hot but that is the reading for the bowl which heats the oxalic. All I know is that the readings seen here for the bowl seem to work very well.

229 celsius is 440 Fahrenheit...i need to learn more about this. Like I said the tool I'm making needs no battery. It's super fast and easy but need to know what is the right temp. Ill send ya a pick when it's done.

this is what I found online with the pro vap 110: Place the still inverted vaporizer stem (with lid attached) into the drilled hole then turn the vaporizer right side up and tap the lid. The acid will fall into the bowl and start to vaporize. This will cause the temperature to drop to approximately 210-215 then very quickly start to rise. When it again reaches 230, it is finished vaporizing and you can move on to the next hive. This will take approximately 20 seconds! You need to seal any openings during and 10 minutes after vaporization. It is not unusual to see the temperature rise above 230 to 250 during treatments. This is normal and well within tolerances.
