Regarding the Y-train junctions, split one brach of the Y in to two one way tracks, and the one which would normally cross over, make it go over or under the "main" line.

Yes! This! If I had the skills I'd create a thing on the workshop that has a 2 track railway split into a central regular 2 track connection and single track oneway connections on the sides, and one version each that also has one of those side tracks do a nicely sloped flyover ending in a re-merged 2 track connection.

i think train traffic is best managed by separating your inter-city trains from your city trains. like a hub where passengers and cargo come into the city and then transfer to the local train or public transport. essentially one just keeps the inter-city trains on different tracks. lemme know what u think
@MrKholishUmar
@MrKholishUmar 2 года назад
Also when your city line is blockaded by traffic, your supply line is broken and the game things you need more imports, thus pumping more unwanted traffic into your city
@teddynielsen

That’s what I do with my city. There’s only a short section where freight trains share the tracks with my city trains.
@TheWoblinGoblin
@TheWoblinGoblin 2 года назад
Even that solution pushes limits when the city gets large enough. Essentially when you have 4-5 used cargo stations you would need more capacity at the stations themselves to serve all the traffic, at least that is my experience.

Fixing trains is such a fun part of this game, although a bit aggravating. One of the techniques I use is make sure every segment can hold at least a full train, or is divisible by a full segment. It's a greatest common denominator problem.
@whynotagain3639
@whynotagain3639 2 года назад
When you say segment what do you mean?
@cf453
@cf453 2 года назад
Same issue as OpenTTD or Factorio. We also build "stackers" in front of stations, whether parallel or serial, to take more incoming traffic off the main line.
@whynotagain3639
@whynotagain3639 2 года назад
@@cf453 stackers? What does stackers mean? I've been playing this game for years and today I learn of trains fitting one segment, but what's a segment and what's it's length? And stacker's what the f are they?
@MrKholishUmar
@MrKholishUmar 2 года назад
@@whynotagain3639 From what I understand, they might mean that in a train junction, the train should be able to stop without blocking the intersection for another train to pass to the other way, so any "section", i.e. parts, of the Y junction (or any other place where lines met) should be long enough to accommodate one train in full stop. And it is advisable to make another line for the train to pass through without going into a station if your station is in the main line, so you should make a line besides/parallel to the station's line for the trains that doesn't need to get into the station (for me, in my game I just usually make the station off my main line, thus avoiding any unwanted traffic).
@whynotagain3639
@whynotagain3639 2 года назад
@@MrKholishUmar thanks, so stacking just means bypassing the station, I do that anyway and try to keep my cities looking realistic so I've got no single track anywhere, in real life most tracks are at least 4-6 wide, so keep mine that wide too. I'm confused at making sure it can fit in the station though, all trains are different lengths so how do ascertain the correct length for the segment? The issues I have are the very long freight trains causing the traffic, might need to completely separate it, but again that's not realistic at least not in the UK anyway.
@ulisseviezzoli7939
@ulisseviezzoli7939 2 года назад
An advice for your next city: railway slopes shouldn't be over 1% (freght trains can't climb and brake on steeper slopes) I love your content, please don't take that as a criticism, it is just a suggestion to make it a bit more realistic
@SirJack5885theFirst
@SirJack5885theFirst 2 года назад
To be fair, the vertical scaling in Cities skylines isn't scaled the same way as the horizontal scaling. So having a slope greater than 1% is kind of necessary.
@toddcrone7803
@toddcrone7803 2 года назад
We run on grades of well over 1% every day with 150 car and larger freight trains with no issues.
@hellsop
@hellsop 2 года назад
Yes, which makes the planning of rail and road very ... interesting. To meet a 1% slope over a road takes a 500m run (1/4 of a tile side) to get up and and the same back down to clear the 5m over a road, and twice that to clear another railway at 10m. The only way to manage that in practice is to resign oneself to either a whole lot of at-grade crossings (with heavy consequence in traffic flow) or run rails either in cuts or on embankments for most of the through-city operations and putting cargo terminals and train stations on the tops of hills or in pits. Which is exactly how it's managed most places where the community is older than the rails. If the railway were there first, there's just a lot of road flyovers (or at-grade crossings when traffic is light enough), and duplication of resources and services from one side of the rail to the other.
@MajorHickE
@MajorHickE 2 года назад
Counterpoint: commuting by rail would be wayyy more entertaining if the route was designed like a roller coaster
@ulisseviezzoli7939
@ulisseviezzoli7939 2 года назад
@@toddcrone7803 well for that reason I wrote that "railway slopes *shouldn't* be over 1%" Freight trains performance dramatically drops over that, and that's the same for high speed trains (which barely go over 0.35%). In general the maximum limit is something like 4%, but of course there are exceptions considering different types of trains
@peperoni3140
@peperoni3140 2 года назад
The problem will always be the intersections where trains need to cross over the track going the opposite direction. Splitting the tracks into one way tracks that join into the correct side solves the problem, but take up a lot more time and space
@lukasmax6984
@lukasmax6984 2 года назад
No necessarily. We already have places that have 3 pairs of straight train tracks side by side for no obvious reason. Multi level interchanges will eliminate the need of having several pairs of train tracks side by side. Edit: Also the need of having each track segment to be long enough to fit an entire train, will not be a problem any more.

@danielwilson6323 2 года назад
The nuclear option would be to use one way train tracks and basically create an interchange at ever major intersection. I've found that the problems always stem from trains crossing over multiple tracks to turn off to a new route. Downside: it takes more space if you want it to look realistic (without 45 degree sloped tracks lol)
2 года назад
Would probably be enough to do it at the major junctions though
@stevieinselby
@stevieinselby 2 года назад
I've said it before and I'll say it again ... use one-way railway tracks to create flyovers so that tracks aren't crossing over each other, this reduces conflict points and massively reduces the risk of train gridlock. Also when you remove the level crossing, it would be much more realistic to leave the railway where it was and put the road on a bridge.

Another solution to the trains bunching at the edge of the map is simply to use lane connectors at the last node. One track is exit only, the other is entrance only, and no more problems with two trains both trying to come in. Figured this one out when I had four inbound trains -- two at each end!

You can get more control over the "intercity" trains by drawing train lines from stations to the spawn points at the edges of the map. This functions as an internal train line but is actually bringing tourists in. That way you can control the number of trains on the line as normal. Then switch off the intercity trains option at all stations.

I think that another switch closer to the main station for the orange trains might help. They could keep going straight after the tunnel and then take their left turn. And congrats again on the Redbull Challenge Biffa.

Cable cars generally go high over rivers. Biffa: put them as low as possible.

Biffa even I had this same issue in this map, the way I fixed it by making some extra room for train in the end, I even didn't know that you can change the spawn track :)

Great vid, a thought about the Entertainment island maybe put a Quay wall around it. One with the walking path on it.

I love how you put the train on a very jerky bridge with steep slopes instead of simply lowering the road

Hey Biffa, What fixed the train issue for me on a stock map was to give the first node inside of the map (the one you were fixing with additional tracks) by simply giving the retriction that switching is not allowed. (With TMPE). Also working with one way tracks at busy junctions enhances train flow drastically as you can prevent tracks crossing each other.

Train problems are a real mess in Cities Skylines. Thanks for the trains leaving and entering the map. I had trouble with this in every single game and I had not found a good solutions. However, I found two fixes for inside the map: (a) Connect freight terminals with a single line in and a singe line out (at the other end). This avoids blocks in the terminal, as trains try to cross over. (b) Never connect a busy line with dual tracks. Have a point/switch on each side. One for incoming and one for outgoing trains. Also on a side note: The one train with the bigger gap, was a shorter train. The distance between trains seems (sometimes?) be governed by the maximal length of a train. As passenger trains are shorter, the gap becomes bigger.

Congrats on the victory. You have to make a memorial ceremony in Alien Rock Park for the rocks that fell on the way to victory. And make a park with the trophy. Or is there a maker, that can recreate the trophy as a building in New Tealand??? I think that it was a competition like ‘The Great British Bake Off’ where you great builders competed under pressure. It was thrilling for us knowing spectors to watch it as a adrenaline pumped event where you had to use your skills to beat the others.

one think to consider is, that you should treat (busy) rail lines like (busy) highways: don't have left turns crossing oncoming traffic. Split them to the right and have them pass under or over the uncoming track. Doesn't fix all problems but helps a lot.

you should use the lane connectors in traffic manager on the last node before the outside connections. This means that trains coming in can only use one line and the trains leaving use the other side. Hope this makes sense, but fixes train outside connections.

Good job biffa! May I suggest 3 things: 1) Why don't you extend the cable cars even further to the other small islands? 2) You can add a rail zip line from the factory cargo over the Road in the other way! 3) Why don't you do an episode where you split the railway, cargo from passenger? The last one you did was so much fun!
