just a quick vid of melting down some pennies and casting Zinc $1 coins. The 2 coins came out different as I used cement dust with 1 and not the other while casting. I did have it mentioned in video but I accidentally deleted that bit while editing 🙄.

I started pouring my own custom copper bars. They weigh about 2.5 pounds each. I will definitely make a video to show you. They come out awesome! Pouring into petrobond sand is so much better than graphite molds.

+Jeff Geo Man yeah I would love to get some petrobond sand it is soooo good i would love to do coins & certain belt buckles and personalised things . I've seen it in a few modelling magazines the details on pieces are absolutely awesome . I can't find any in Australia at all although I can get some from overseas at about $38 for 0.5 kg😳😮. Bit bloody pricey for half a kilo☹️. Definitely let me know when you upload the vid I would love to check it out 👍🏻

bigstackD i buy in ebay $28 usd for 10 pounds. Then i had another guy make me a wood model that has "Copper" written on the front and then i made the mold with the petrobond and pour with an open back. The detail on the fine lettering comes out nearly perfect. This makes these copper bars unique and one of a kind like you suggested.

Totally illegal to destroy us coins but my local museum has a machine that will smash a penny flat and imprint a different design on it for the mere cost of 50 cents. I think its hilarious that a city building encourages you to commit a federal crime for such a low cost.

Common misconception. You can destroy currency all you wish. You however can not melt them down to sell them for the intrinsic value of the metal.

They changed the law so now when you put your penny in the machine has to substitute a separate piece of copper to stamp. If they have been swapped out or upgraded the machines they are illegal.

Hey brother, hoping you could help me out. I just built my own furnace today in hopes to melt some scrap cartridge brass (that isn't reloadable any more), but it didn't turn out good at all. Not a single brass casing melted....but I'm not sure why. Well, obviously it didn't get hot enough, but I cant understand why. What I did is took plaster of paris and sand and filled up a 5 gallon bucket for the outside perimeter of the foundry. Not a traditional 5 gallon, this one was shorter and wider. Then, I used a typical cylindrical bathroom waste basket to shape the inside of the furnace. It had a good thick wall around the inner and outer portions, and also had good depth. I made the lid out of a standard 5 gallon bucket (the mouth end) again using the plaster of paris and sand. The lid was about 3-4" thick, and I used a soda can for the ventilation hole. I used a 1"x24" steel pipe with a coupling, then a 24" PVC pipe, and hooked up an air compressor out of an air mattress. I loaded It up with charcoal and turned on the air and it seemed like the heat was screamin hot. Put the brass in, and it didn't melt. I tried for over an hour...adding in new charcoal, plugging up the ventilation hole thinking it was too big...everything. I don't know how to fix it at this point.
@bigstackD
@bigstackD 6 лет назад
+Rodney Greenway hey buddy the furnace it's self sounds fine obviously it's the heat problem. Brass is extremely hard to melt with charcoal furnaces and I very rarely see it as the heat needed is tremendous. I have my propane burner pretty much flat out for an hour of continued heat to melt brass and that is bloody hammering out the heat. Have you tried aluminium melting with it yet that's always 10 times easier. My mate has a cool channel and he melts brass and even copper in I believe a charcoal furnace so he would be better to ask as I personally never used charcoal and only ever used electric or gas . He should be able to help you a lot more than I can mate . His Channel is Dural Metalurg and here's a link to his channel aswell 👍🏻 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j4wlE1dv6y8.html

Thanks for the quick reply. I am going to build a forced air torch tomorrow but run 2 of them with a t fitting. I am wondering if I put a coating of furnace cement and ITC100 HT ceramic coating on the lid and furnace portion if it would hold up for longer. I don't currently have a furnace shell around the outside. I would like to put one on for looks, but don't know of any purpose it fills besides looks. I had a plastic bucket that was perfect...but now have to find a metal bucket that the furnace would fit in snuggly lol. I've already spent too much on it to scrap it, so I want to reinforce it to lengthen the life span. I don't really have an interest in melting aluminum because I never have it or get it, but ive got hundreds of pounds of brass so I want to get that melted down. My plan is mostly to make ingots, but may do some casting once I figure out the furnace and how to regulate and control the temp.
@bigstackD
@bigstackD 6 лет назад
+Rodney Greenway the only furnace cement I can get hold of where I am is only rated to 1000 degrees Celsius and I regularly go way above that so it always breaks down , I'm not sure about the stuff you mentioned. On the lid of my furnace once the cement finally breaks down ( its bloody close now) I'm gonna try source some kaowool as I've heard that's pretty good and it'll make the lid a shitload lighter . Yeah people carry on about the fibers that come off it but I have a good facemask with a filter so I don't care and alot of people don't realise it's the shit you can't see that does the real damage not the stuff your eyes can see floating around. Oh well time will tell . Are you thinking about uploading any of your vids or is it just a personal thing? If you are let me know I'll definitely sub and watch them all 😁👍🏻. Also what about a big flat piece of steel or sheeting you could wrap around the furnace and cut to length and drill it together wear it joins? Unless your moving it around I wouldn't think you would need a base as that would get very minimal wear well mine has no wear and I've done 100 melts in it I recon (I do have a base on my furnace but would think it would work exactly the same if I didn't) .

@SwiftCreationStudio
@SwiftCreationStudio 4 года назад
Separating copper from zinc is pretty easy. If you have ever melted pennies or anything you'd know Zinc melts at 787.2F (forgive my 'murica) copper on the other hand melts at 1984F The separation at least in large part would happen on its own if you don't allow the copper to reach it's melting point... If you're into having basically copper foil you can dissolve zinc in muriatic acid which doesn't harm the copper and there are supposedly ways to reclaim the zinc from the acid too but I wouldn't care to try. Simple answer is use a lower heat.

These are all US pennies, and doing this in the US would be illegal because it's destroying government property. I would assume Australia would have a similar law prohibiting people from doing this with Australian currency. I can't really find anything about laws prohibiting you from doing this to another country's currency if you live somewhere else. Probably not the best idea just to be safe, but it seems technically ok to do as long as it isn't your own country's currency while you live in the same country lol

No wonder they say there's no monetary worth in melting pennies for their copper, they're mostly zinc!
@Dan-vz7xu
@Dan-vz7xu 4 года назад
There is actually, it's just illegal. U.S pennies from 1864-1982 were 95% and weighed 3.11 grams or one 1/10th of a Troy Oz. Exceptions include the 1943 cent which was made of steel. And about 25% of 1982 cents are the current zinc pennies. 75% of 1982 are copper, so you'll have to weigh 1982 cents to actually tell if they are zinc (2.5g vs 3.11g) You can buy a U.S penny sorter, which separates zinc and copper cents quickly. People have warehouses with pallets of copper cents ready to be melted once it's legal. You can essential double your money if you have the right set up.

+Killer Memestar thanx bro I definitely do something. Probably do something interesting foe 5000 so that'll give me plenty of time to think about it. I'll probably do a 2 or 3 metal plaque. Maybe copper brass and aluminium but poured separately but to all make 1 plaque. I'll have plenty of time to think of something 🤔😉👍🏻

your zinc was too hot :) It is hard to melt zinc in a blast furnace without getting a bunch of dross and fuming. I have heard of people melting it on a hot plate, I use a natural draft smelter which heats it up much more slowly. Having seen your video I now want to cast a coin!
@bigstackD
@bigstackD 6 лет назад
Yeah coin casting can be really rewarding. I obviously can’t do it very well but in other videos I’ve seen on RU-vid they can be almost flawless if you know what your doing👍🏻

You could have probably just melted it with a torch to avoid over heating it

Isn't it a federal crime to make coins
@bigstackD

Riley B -Many people think that it is illegal to incorporate coins into jewelry making or other items. This is not true. It is illegal to deface US currency if the intent is continue to use it as legal tender after it has been altered. As I won’t be trying to spend the coins I made it should be ok , also there’s no way they could be mistaken for actual currency as it’s such a bad copy I made. 👍🏻. From what I’ve read That’s my understanding. 😁

@bigstackD 6 лет назад
Yeah I’ve heard heaps of stories but ide say your probably 100% right. I’m in Australia and here they say it’s against the law to deface legal currency but I have never heard of anyone getting into trouble. 🤷🏻‍♂️😁. Bit of a grey area I recon my friend 👍🏻

Well half of the one's minted in 1982 were Zinc, they switched halfway in to the year so you need to test the one minted in 82.

_Not in Australia._ It's also allowed in America if you're melting for educational or jewelry purposes. Pretty much the only way it's not allowed is what he is implying, scrapping.
@SwiftCreationStudio
@SwiftCreationStudio 4 года назад
Making the coin might be iffy but that... is another issue on its own Australia probably doesn't care because it's not accepted even if it was real. US gov can only prosecute counterfeiting cases in their borders... If he never touches US soil with those coins there's nothing to be done even if they knew he was doing it.
