Thanks for this. I stopped DJing 20 years ago and just recently pulled my 1210s and Vestax mixer out of the garage for my daughters to enjoy. I've been acutely aware how DJing has progressed but never thought I'd be able to afford new equipment, let alone understand how it all works. Now I can move into 2022 with my 1989 1210s 👍

I think this has just been the answer to soon to be problem. I have Traktor Kontrol S4. Im in the process of getting some 1210 Mk2. I am looking to switch over to Rekordbox. Purely from a Bedroom DJ poirt I aiming to combine both decks and a controller as my digital collection is increasing, but I want to relive my old bedroom DJ days and play vinyl. Plus there are some tracks I cannot get hold of. So thank you for shedding a great deal of light of what I can achieve.

I currently have my mkii on the market, but holy smokes, I might take it off! I only have one, so I'll get the appropriate audio interface. I've got loads of mp3s and my 100 year old mixer - can't wait!!!
Hi Phil! Great video as usual. One question though.. Do you need to have the DVS expansion pack for serato in order for the set up to work, or you can just plug everything as it is? Thank you.
@@digitaldjtips from what I gather the Denon DVS interface is no longer available (discontinued?) and the other ones available don't work with Serato (which is my preferred software). Was looking at the Numark Scratch mixer that comes with DVS integrated, Serato software, and Control Vinyl. That's about £400 and then a laptop too which would cost another £300 I assume (I have a crappy one that just wouldn't be suitable). It's all a bit pricey. Any suggestions on how to do this cheaper and/or on suitable budget laptops? I'm not too fussed either about having all the bells and whistles that come with the Numark Scratch mixer. I just wanna mix, not press buttons. Lol. That's half the reason I gave everything up in the first place. Ps. My old setup is 2 x 1210s and a SoundLab Mixer. TIA.
Hi, I was wondering if this channel ever did an episode about new DJs starting our own weekly radio shows or weekly podcasts and the software, streaming or licenses available to make it happen ... also how to reach people once we create these DJ shows. How do we go about it? If there's a show already please link me, if not, would be a great future idea!
Not enough mentions of CD DVS. Lots of Pioneer CDJs out there gathering dust. And they’re way cheaper to maintain, more portable and don’t need overpriced stylus and cartridges.
This is the wrong video for that, it's about turning the gear you've already got into a DVS setup (hence the title) :) What's your budget? Cheap and DVS don't really go together (imo) if you don't already have the gear
This may be a silly questions, but what about listening to your cues tracks when you have a setup with an older mixer and technics hooked up via DVS? I am trying to wrap my head around this. Thanks in advance!
I was going to get a Denon or Rane Serato box. But while I was saving for it my dad took the families laptop to be fixed & for some reason he told the guy to delete everything from the hard drive! I had thousands of songs downloaded from iTunes, now they’re gone down the Swanee! And since I’m not very technically minded I didn’t have any of them backed up (still don’t even know how to do that). Now I’m saving for a laptop of my own so I can start from scratch. This all happened months ago & I’m still fuming about it 😠
What about micro pitch movements with vinyl, when doing long mixes in house music and you need it perfect. Sometimes on my Technics I just have to move the pitch half a millimetre to get it perfectly matched for a long mix. Does Serato pick up those small micro movements on the pitch? Every tutorial I see they just make large movements on the pitch up and down just to show Seraao tracking the pitch
I'm kind of getting the feeling here that I'm still better off getting a second hand CDJ with USB support and adding that to my traditional setup :) Also translates a little better experience-wise when you're playing something where there are both decks (becoming a rarity) and CDJs or just CDJs. You can't just bring that stuff and rig it up on the spot, depending on where you play, plus, you might not want it. So I'm sort of leaning towards get a decent second hand CDJ and ram it into the line in of one of the channels of your 2 channel (if you have a 2 channel HAK 360 for ex. like I do).
hi phil i have a denon dj mc7000 i have addadided to extra decks to the the controler the two decks are called newmarks tt1650. but i cant get any sound out of them thay do have two small amperfires conected to them but still cant get any sound out of them. whats the best thing to do to get the sound to come out of them. many thanks john.

I have old technics 1200s and an old numark mixer. I want to do this with my set up. Great video. This is everything I wanted to know thank you. One question , are there recommended needles to use that are good for both records and the control vinyl. It’s 2021 now is it still good to use this set up. I only DJ as a hobby in my basement.

Let's say that apart from the 2 turntables , I want to add in my set up 2 Pioneer CDJs devices (models that belong to the Serato Official Accesory category). Will these 2 extra CDjs be displayed in Serato DJ Pro or do I need : a) Rane SL4 and b) 4-channel mixer (like Pioneer DJM-600) in order to succeed that? Obviously you need a four-channel mixer if you want two turntable and two DVS decks. and yes it'll work fine, you plug the CDJs into the computer via USB and the audio into the mixer as normal.
One thing to keep in mind is compatibility. Some gear is no longer supported by Serato and you have to use older versions of the software. Also, that older software may not be compatible for your laptop's OS. I am currently using an older MacBook Pro but the USB bus is too slow and sometimes causes the audio to skip. I want to use my new laptop but the only versions of Serato I can use on that laptop do not support the Serato Scratch Live that I have. Any advice?
I have both 1200 mk2 Technic turntables I also have pioneers cdjs question I have my Serato DSI with Interface my computer stop working what happens to my Files if I by another computer how can I get my old folder back . I didn't back up my music so can I get my hardrive transferred and how can you please I feel useless without my music I hate to go back to analog and start using MP3s if I get a different computer do I have to start downloading the music all over yes or no can you help me thank you so much

Yes, you can do that. you need to select "THRU" mode - here's how to do it in Serato: support.serato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004125475-Virtual-Deck-Play-Modes
Evening Phil, I have 3 vinyl turntables and a Pioneer DJM-900NXS mixer that I want to hook up to the Serato software. My questions are: 1. Does the Serato software support 3no. turntables (the images of the software I have seen seem to only show 2no. turntables)? 2. Is my only option the Rane SL3 (the Denon DJ DS1 is made for 2no. turntables only)? Thanks!
I believe it is only possible to use two turntables with dvs, although you could use say four CDJs with HID. You don’t need a separate audio interface though, your mixer has one built in that will work with Serato and its Club Kit ExpansionPack.
I purchased a Numark M6 usb. Would I need an audio interface to go in between the mixer and my laptop to run Serato, or should I be able to just plug into the usb?
JubileeGiggles hey giggles. Yeah the vinyl keeps playing the tone over and over. I guess this is a fail safe, but you’ll likely never go past 15 minutes the control vinyl gives you.
It's a never ending vinyl. I've seen scratch records where a tone lasts forever. The grooves just connect back with each other like a train track joining back onto a line.

I don't have turntables anymore and I don't want to spend too much on ddj800 simultaneously ddj 400 is tad to small for my needs secondly I really like the design language of ddj line so other brands just don't interest me tbh . @@digitaldjtips yeah, I think there is still place there for another one in 400- 500€ mark (preferably 400 ;) Im waiting for it since April ,I may be pulling the trigger on 400 I just don't want wait any longer but knowing my luck 600 will come out shortly after my purchase 🤣 I have had my t440 thinkpad tested with recordbox and it works like a charm very happy about that ,tbh I just can't believe how industry moved forward since first dvs systems came out and now such a portable controllers with many great features coming from many sources ,I wish to have ddj with moving platters that would be the dream for me but that would be too good to be true ;) Tnx for answering!
@@digitaldjtips kinda yeah ;) I have found used 400 for price a tad bigger than new 200 In really good condition (with recordbox) can't wait to get it ,I may be switching layer on if that will be to small for hopefully 600 in near future.
@@digitaldjtips Mixxx is the first program of this type I've ever used (been spinning vinyl since the 90's) and I must say I'm really impressed. Quantized looping is fun :)
You can buy a serato sp1 second hand for about £70 or a reloop neon £40 second hand or the pioneer Reckordbox ddj xp1 second hand for about £130.. all cheaper depending on wants & needs
@@digitaldjtips but I cant use the vinyl to do it with serato dj, scratchlive lets you do it. I am using a normal mixer the same as in your video that has no controller in it, it needs to be in serato dj so when you place the needle at the end of the record groove it loads the next track.
@@digitaldjtips I find vinyl scroll faster then using a midi mixer to load the next track still, even though i don't have a midi mixer tried my friends midi mixer and it's slower by time you turn the knob and then press it, I want speed when mashing up tracks playing only 1 bar then dropping the next track when doing a mash up mix
@@digitaldjtips I figured it out on Serato, you leave everything as us but on Serato you go from selecting ‘absolute to through’ then your original 80s/90s vinyl plays through digital line not phono.
It's RCA cables, simply running from the channel outputs to the inputs on the soundcard you have - if you check the manual for it there is probably a diagram
*Niels de Wit* apparently there was a ‘hidden’ feature on that mixer. If you turned the low eq down, the high acted like a high & low pass filter, the likes of which are found on today’s’ mixers!
Hi Phil, Doug my SL2 box out recently and decided to use it again after 5 year hiatus or so. Thing is I'm trying to run it with (of course 2 turntables and a Mac pro Big unfortunately I cannot make it work due to GOD knows mistake i'm making. I think it might be a clash between SL2 and Mac OS pro but my knowledge is limited. Can you help ? Please tell if downgrading system is required or whateva. All the best. Thanks Sergio

I am super confused. I subscribe to this channel because of future music and gear, and yet your new tip is telling people the very first version of digital DJ that there ever was? Those boxes have been around longer than your channel.
