He speaks the truth from my experience before the cool RU-vid Video's: CCNA - Straight to networking for the foot in the door within the NOC (Like Citi) 1. Next, after the NOC; update resume to Network ENG instead of NOC as you are doing the function with Citi 2. As you first start out; jump jobs and give yourself at least a 7k raise at each jump (why? get your hands on more gear and different functional environments very valuable) 3. After the 4 or so job jumps, after your salary is >90k; specialize within SD-WAN, Python or Cloud. The key word is specialize within 1 or 2. You do NOT have to be an expert in the specialization, if you have a strong foundation (Most companies will send you to classes) 4. After you have the above under your belt, move away from operations/sustainment to professional services OR design/architecture 5. Very important... HAVE soft-skills (emotional intelligence). Know that the technical is ONLY 30% at this point with knowing how to leverage or offload for others to learn while coaching would be the remaining 70%. Always, take ownership and play the game well. Understand your plan current, tactical and strategic approaches. Remember in the real world, people pay for problem solving or to deal with hard heads to get a task or project moving. Don;t be a know it all, I can not state how many really smart people I met that are still network engineers or Sr. (lead) network engineers to not move up the ladder due to their EGO. My path I took - NOC -> Network Engineer ->Sr. Engineer -> Principal Network Engineer - 17 years within the space having 13 years as a Principal Learn the talk: Use matter or situation instead of problem or issue. Use key word to talk with seasoned professionals or engineers: self-healing footprint holistic traffic steering next steps/action items to state when ** hits the fan setback road-map The challenge (no excuses)... saturation/capacity maturity (understanding for upgrades of code) stretch scope creep trade-offs assumptions, risks and dependencies etc I do not mind talking some time if helpful.
