One of the interesting things about it was that he used the cane incorrectly. As a doctor you would think that he would know this but it wasn't something that the script writers were aware of during the early episodes. They eventually tried to write it into the story line but character chose to revert to the "old way".
When you're using a cane, the proper way is to use it in the opposite hand of your bad/weak leg.
If your right leg is bad, then you would use your cane in the left hand. This gives your bad leg more support as you're walking.
