How to use a GPS receiver for hiking part 1

An overview of using a hand held GPS receiver for hiking, trekking, hunting, fishing, or any other wilderness travel. We mark the position of our vehicle at the trail head, set the GPS receiver to auto-track out route, mark points of interest along the way, and then finally save our route as a track for future use. This is not a tutorial on how to use the menu, just an overview of how it can be used in a few different situations.

Great video, very helpful, thanks! I have an old etrex vista cox that I want to test. I’ve tried some smart phone apps, but they use up about 75% of my phone charge. I put it on airplane mode when there’s no cell service so it won’t use my data. I feel the Garmin GPS (or Magellan) is more dependable - just always carry 2 extra AA batts! LOL!

Thank-you! very nice indications, effective and practical !.. Count you'll add something more detailed for advanced functions, like managing maps, plannong routes on pc and then transfering to gps, ... Bye for now.

@Z3Carpentry Most of the newer GPS receivers allow for downloads of custom topo maps. I am not sure about that trail specifically, but I am sure there should be something out there. With the Magellan Triton 400 I have some custom maps of my area that actually show satellite image. Storage space on the unit will be the main concern with larger maps. Hope that helps, and thanks a lot for watching the vid :-)

Just an idea I've purchased a portable charger for my I phone and carry extra batteries for my GPS. Oh, also take a map and compass and rain poncho. Coast Guard moto Semper Peradus (always ready). Good hiking, for me there is nothing as great hike on a wilderness trail..

So I was at school today and I have this teacher where you can do anything in her class, while I was grinding fortnite mobile on my phone the assistant principal came in and saw me on my phone. So I said I was researching math but he saw through my bull crap and gave me detention. So I am in detention right now, thanks for the vid I guess.

Excellent real World intro to gps video for beginners! That's pretty much exactly how i play with -- er umm i mean: test my navigation equipment. ;D Although Bethlehem doesn't have such awesome falls! Is the breadcrumbs term from your gps or manual? i've actually thought thought of the trail track feature as the digital version of leaving breadcrumbs behind you. XD Also; very cool using Gordon Lightfoot! Hey, know of any FREE dowloadable gps maps sources? i've had no luck on that.

At the end, you said you were about to lose your battery. Why was that? The battery indicator was showing green/almost full.

Folks, handheld GPS units like this will soon be vanishing. Smart phones will take over almost all applications. Smart phone GPS apps have free maps, much better screen resolution, easier interface, and are much much less expensive. Search RU-vid for "Gaia GPS" to learn about one of the best ones.

okay if both your cell phone battery is not dead, and as long as you have cell coverage. if you're actually lost, i dont want to rely on my iphone, the battery would be dead by 2pm if i used the mapping app. this unit saves my battery phone and will run all day without cell coverage.
@johngo6283
@johngo6283 7 лет назад
Steve, you bring up a common misconception. You do NOT need cell coverage to use a smartphone GPS app like Gaia. the GPS chip works fine all on it's own. Carrying an aux battery and a tiny charging cable is cheap and light (about $20 and 4 ounces). Sure, if you are using your GPS constantly in tricky terrain, than a dedicated GPS may be a good choice. But if you are using a GPS more as an occasional check to ensure your map and compass are keeping you on course, then a phone is prolly better for most users. Try the phone app and see if it suits your needs.

you're totally right. and yes, iphone gps is very accurate, maybe even more than this. everyone has a different use case. in my case, i want a dedicated device to track where i'm going on vacation so i can geo tag my photos from my DSLR later (and other cameras) so for the price, its only a few $ more for this than a GPS logger and i think way more reliable. with a pair of lithium e3 batteries, you can get a few days of continuous run time and not worry about making sure the app on your cell phone is actually working correctly. for me, its worth $150 for a dedicated logger that does more and i can clip it to my bag and forget about it for the day.
@johngo6283
@johngo6283 7 лет назад
Steve, good point. For your use, a dedicated GPS is prolly the best choice.
