Please, never rinse plaster of Paris down the sink. It coats the pipes and then the pipes need replacing!
@myfamiliycreationsjuarez7350
yes I was going to say the same thing. yes common sense told me but I have a plumber husband who set up a whole new sink in my craft room so I dont use my house sinks for anything not even paint water lol or paint brush water n if he sees a spot od paint he reminds me again thrn I say I washed my hands n then he reminds my thats why he bought n installed another sink that dont matter if it gets paint drop stains on it lol. oh but my point even though the drain is like commercial size still can't put plaster of Paris down it lol

Start w very cold water in container you plan to mix the plaster in. I even add ice cubes so it’s extra cold. I mix in a pinch of baking soda to the powder. The cold water and baking powder slows down the hardening so it buys you more time since it sets so quickly. I slowly spoon the plaster into the water and I stir VERY slowly. These are also steps which slow the hardening down. You may not need more time depending on what your project is but because of what I’m using it for I very much need the extra 15-30 it gives me.

Tip: I saw a video, and they mix oil and soap together, then coat molds so the tiny areas don't break. They also do the same thing when using the plaster item to make another mold design to sell. They just coat the plaster with the same mixture and coat with plaster. It showed it didn't stick. Hope that helps. 🤗 I'm gonna try it the way I saw. Yes, please don't put down the sink it will clog your pipes. I had some in a plastic bowl, a tiny bit filled with water, and it still got hard as a rock couldn't get off bowl.

Hi Stacy! The reason it's called plaster of Paris is become it was originally from Montmartre, Paris. It was made from gypsum deposits in Montmartre. :D

Brushing talcum powder lightly in your silicone molds before pouring helps the release process. Have found it really helps prevent breakage on the more delicate pieces when you are taking them out of the molds.

Ive just tried backing a larger plaster mold with great stuff foam. It bonds, fills in the pockets and voids, all the while offering more strength. Now I can set it down and not worry about the plaster because it comes with it's own foam cushion.

To all my different clays I add 1 tsp of hand lotion, depending on how much I'm making. The POP doesn't crack as much, especially if I'm using molds. I never tried adding glue to POP, but have used it with paper mache and corn starch clay.. Thank you for the tip on that

In short: Plaster of Paris. A large gypsum deposit near the hill Montmartre (now part of Paris) Before it became part of Paris it had a village on the hill and was still outside of Paris. The villagers economic motor was selling the plaster. In 1860 it became a part of Paris. The (probably good quality) plaster had become known as plaster of Paris.

Hi. At 21:00 when you found that the paste was already hardening, would it have been a good idea to mix in a few drops of water at that stage? Also .. your releasing method is wrong my friend. You need to invert the mold and gently push from thr back.

@morningflowerB
@morningflowerB 6 лет назад
Maybe dust the mold for the fragile ones with cornstarch before pouring would help stop the cracking and wait longer before bending the mold to remove the other ones.. Or you can use a drop of dish soap in a spray bottle of water and spray your mold. Also, you want really cold water and put the PoP in the water slowly but do not stir while evenly sprinkling it in. When it will not soak up anymore slowly stir it in. It should look like pancake batter This slows down the hardening process. Make sure you let the left over to harden and throw away in the garbage.. It will ruin your pipes. I'm sure you know that but l thought l'd better mention for others who don't know. You can also make texture paste with it .. whoop! But, I'd give it a shot. ~Shrug~ Neat molds btw.. 🌺

Why is it called Plaster of Paris? you asked??? Plaster of Paris, or simply plaster, is a type of building material based on calcium sulfate hemihydrate (gypsum.) A large gypsum deposit at Montmartre in Paris is the source of the name.

HEY there! Loved this video but I have an update for you! I've been experimenting with some molds that are small and very detailed. I've found if you put a thin coat of PVC glue over the entire mold and let it dry then you can easily pull out all of the tiny pieces in one go without them cracking or getting stuck. For larger highly detailed molds I tried putting a thicker coating of glue on the back... Worked like a charm to get the pieces out without cracking!!!

I've been using plaster of paris for years as gesso on my canvases. I actually like it better than gesso, for many reasons. The consistency I use is as thick, or thin, as pancake batter. Or eggnog. It's never dried on me either. But like I said I thin it out.
