Here's the quick description of how to use saddle soap:
Brush off all dust and dirt from your boots with a rag. Fill the top of your saddle soap tin with warm water.
Wet a dauber brush with the water and create suds in the saddle soap by working the dauber in a circular motion.
Brush your entire boot in a circular motion until the upper is entirely covered in suds. Wipe off excess soap with a microfiber towel.
Let your boots dry and condition.

Also worth mentioning, make sure you brush the dust and loose dirt off your boots so you're not just making mud.

When I was in high school, I showed livestock at fairs. I used saddle soap on my show boots and show halters to prep them and then again afterward to clean the halters for storage. Everything got conditioned, too. That feels like a lifetime ago to me.
@oldspen85
@oldspen85 Год назад
All true. However, that saddle soap also conditions. If you feel your leather after washing it, you will feel the oiliness from the soap. Not to say you don't need to condition them after, you do. But, that particular saddle soap will not completely dry out your boots.

Ideally you don't want much dirt on your boot in the first place, you'd brush dried mud and dust off the boot first so you don't end up making soap, the more dirt you're scrubbing around the more it acts as an abrasive causing more wear on the leather.

U can use dawn. Then wipe off with damp rag. Then condition
@Jodyrides
@Jodyrides 12 дней назад
Dawn, dishwashing liquid is one of the few soaps/shampoos that does not have LYE in it. Any soap or shampoo or dishwashing liquid that burns your eyes, that’s the LYE. That is also the ingredient that makes soap feel so slippery… I don’t know what harmful effects LYE may have on Weather. But I do know that it is the kryptonite for aluminum. Many tire stores and garage is would use dishwashing liquid to lubricate the bead of a tire when installing tires to make the tires slip on easier. That trapped LYE between the tire and the rim would actually corrode the rim causing slow leaks over time, because that LYE was trapped between the tire and the wheel when it was used as a lubricant.. Dawn dishwashing liquid is one of the few that does not have LYE as an ingredient. I remember the commercials for dawn, dishwashing liquid, when it was being used to clean the poor animals that got caught in the sludge from the oil tanker Exxon Valdez accident in Alaska decades ago. I would like to find out if dawn dishwashing liquid could be used to clean leather if used as maybe only 5% in solution with distilled water. I have cleaned a couple motorcycle jacket. Should I have that were pretty covered with mildew from hanging up in my garage with no air gap between the jackets. I tried cleaning that mildew off with water and soap, it would not come off. I went on RU-vid to find a video that told me that 10% lemon juice in distilled water will clean mildew from leather, it worked instantly. I didn’t even have to rub.. I have a very expensive leather motorcycle jacket made in New England, a Vanson leather jacket. About 15 years ago I paid $750 for this jacket… The jacket came with a care tag. They were very simple and specific. The tag said to only use lemon pledge on this jacket, and nothing else.. I am searching RU-vid right now for message to clean leather. I bought a gorgeous chestnut brown leather coat with a removable fur collar.. it is in excellent condition, but it smells funny. I turned the jacket inside out and worked baking soda into the fur collar, and the lining completely down the sleeves, I worked it into the fur, I had the jacket, turned inside out and hanging on a wide plastic hanger for leather jackets.. I put the jacket in a plastic trash bag fitted from the bottom up and I hung the coat up so the baking soda would absorb the odors overnight.. The next day I vacuumed all the baking soda from the lining and the collar.. I believe it worked at removing that funny odor, it’s not body odor and it’s not cigarette smoke or mildew.. The next day, I’ll let the jacket hanging on a hanger in the sunshine 85° turned inside out all day.. The jacket still smells funny, but it’s the leather that has the odor. I don’t want to put leather conditioner on the leather over top of whatever it is that smells funny. I need to know if I can just use distilled water and a sponge to clean the leather, or maybe white vinegar slightly added to distilled water. there are videos about spraying unflavored vodka on smelly things, that’s what they do to costumes of people working on Broadway to keep the smell down between cleanings of those costumes. But you cannot use any type of alcohol on leather or acetone products.. so any suggestions as to how to clean a beautiful, undamaged, dark brown leather coat that smells funny before applying leather conditioner

Castile soap/oil soap is a fine substitute for saddle soap. Just avoid fragrance'd soaps as the fragrances can often dry out the leather unduly. Leather conditioner vs mink oil is a matter of some contention, but I've personally never found a leather conditioner that did any better of a job than mink oil *unless* the boots were absolutely neglected and wrecked.
@isbee56

mink oil is good for boots you're still breaking in but I've found it doesn't lead to as weather resistant a boot as something like a beeswax based conditioner.

@willcresson8776
@willcresson8776 7 месяцев назад
Use a proper soap. You don't need saddle soap specifically, but you do need an oil based soap. I personally use basic hemp oil castile soap. $5 for three bars, and I've been using the same bar for five years. After that, you're going to want to find a leather polish/shine/stain that's as close in color to your original as possible. Also, get a nice leather conditioner or mink oil. Clean the boots. Let them dry. Stain them with the polish. Let dry. Buff. Stain again. Let dry. Buff. Apply conditioner or mink oil. Let dry. Buff. Apply again. Let dry. Buff. That'll get you about as close to back to original as you can get, and it should only cost you $30-ish.

When to use saddle soap if the boots aren't muddy or grimy?
@christhomas5937
@christhomas5937 Год назад
Use Obenauf's boot grease, will help. Remember that leather was apart of a living animal, where it was getting all the natural oils it needed, once it is made into a pair of boots etc, it will need conditioning fairly regularly to keep from drying out and cracking. If you don't plan on wearing them for awhile condition them first.

You can. Castile soap and oil soaps also work very well. I personally recommend mink oil over "leather conditioner," but that is personal preference. I've had the same pair of Ariat ranchers for 15 years, have put them through the ringer, and they still look brand new if you don't look too closely at the scuffs and scrapes. Castile soap, kiwi polish, and mink oil.

How do I clean white soles
@grb1969
@grb1969 6 месяцев назад
Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and Dawn dishwashing detergent (about 1/8 cup only). Apply gently to sole. (No scrubbing, as you don’t want to get any on the leather!) Return every hour and reapply for 3-10 applications…leave overnight and rinse off within 12-24 hours. No bleach, no scrubbing. H2O2 will foam slightly and lift the dirt off the surface of the sole. (The purpose of the soap is ONLY to thicken the H2O2 and hold it to surface while the peroxide does its magic. Also, clean, condition and seal leather near sole BEFOREHAND … beeswax should protect against slight splash -over but wipe leather edge with Q-tip if (by accident) anything other than white rubber is wetted.

Its so you don't lock moisture into the boot, which causes rotting and leeches out the natural oils in the leather. If they're boots you'll wear for a year and bin then yeah doesn't matter but if they're decent boots that you care about and want to keep for a long time, you want to let them fully dry.

If you take care of your footware that you have spent hundreds of dollars on, you won't need saddle soap. Use the boot grease, a stiff horse hair brush regularly, not just when you remember to. Especially after heavy use, which might be daily, or every other day.
