Full written tutorial on how to use Torch Paste on wood (and the full supply list) : www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2021/09/how-to-use-torch-paste-gel-wood-burning.html
Just came across your video. I am trying torch paste for the first time to create a custom chopping board. Thank you for your tutorial. I am confident that I can do it now!
This is absolutely AWESOME!!! ❤ I had no idea you could do this. The heat gun doesn't do very good and can burn the sides. Thank you for all your trials.
Hi, Sorry if this is alreqdy covered elsewhere. Can you pet me know what type of material is used for the reusable stencils? They appeqr to be vinyl, with an adhesive quality to them that looks helpful in preventing slippage while applying the gel. If they are a particular brand, or if there isna range of manufacturers, would you please share that as well? Also, any idea of how many times they can be reused. Thanks!
HI there - you can find all of the information on the resuable stencils here: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2021/07/how-to-make-reusable-stencils-with.html
I got the little sample kit and this process didn't work on that little piece of wood. After 3 hits of my heat-press, it wasn't changed in color at all so I decided to just hit it with my heat gun in case I had somehow put down the paste wrong. That worked (although I scorched my sample - lol!). I wonder if the number of hits will vary by the wood itself? I've got another little wood project that looks like it is made out of the same type of wood as your ornaments so I'll give that a try. I have several of them to do at a time so I'm hoping I can figure out how to get the gel to activate with my press. Thank you for sharing this and for stressing to use increments. I likely would have gotten over-anxious and scorched my real projects or given up - but now I know to just give it a short hit each time. If it doesn't work with the next wood pieces I'll just stick with my heat gun but I really like this little paste. It has lots of fun potential!
For $40 you can you can buy ammonium chloride and thick it. 1 tbsp of ammonium and 8 tsp of thick it and 1/2 cup of water. Stir let rest for 7 mins and you have enough to fill you torch jar and be able to refill it 100Times with the left overs.
@@SilhouetteSchool awesomeness!!! Like I can't compare the quality differences.. but quantity definitely helps keep cost down for the ones that are alittle more than a hobbyist. For the amount of cutting boards I'm going through I only makes sense to but I'll definitely have to try my heat press or iron out as well!
@@cluteorious it's same exact results, 40 dollars is high for those materials, you can spend much much less for them I think I payed around 20$ and have enough to last years. I've also found that once mixed it lasts at least over a year so far and still works as good as it did the day I mixed it. Just use a airtight jar because it will mold over if not
@@HVACRTECH-83 100% I was over exaggerating the cost that would be almost a life time supply lol I was just trying to state it’s cheaper in the long run for the quantity you can make.
@@karen1nicola yes I’d have to say any food grade thickener that’s a powder like a cornstarch would work. I know there’s other brands than thick it.. just the only name I know
Hello, thank you so much for this video. My question is how do used an easy press from cricket to do this? Because that’s what I have an a wondered if it would be the same? Thank you so much again for this video. I really really need to know how to do this for Christmas gifts I wanted to do.
Hello love your video, watched it last week and was looking for it today and was getting upset cause i couldn't find it. Thank you God I did, you are the greatest. Oh, almost forgot can you do the same thing with the pen (put it in the press to burn the wood do you think it would work the same with good print?
@@SilhouetteSchool thank you for your reply and you sure are correct that pen is worthless, I wish i could show you the one wood I did It bleeds and I don't like it, also I used the heat gun instead of my heat press cause i forgot to use the heat press 😒😮💨
Hi, I tried this with a heat gun and messed up lol, I have a press and going to try that but was wondering if a teflon sheet will work or does it have to be butcher paper? I also have a roll of the brown shipping wrapping paper but not sure if thats ok, sorry I messed up all my blanks thats why I'm asking lol. Thank You :)
No, you can stain the wood after you burn in your design just don't stain the wood first as it won't work properly. I've been doing actual wood burning for over 20 years w wood burning tools and I've tried this method although not with the product she is using. I made my own paste. It's very cheap and easy to make your own and lasts along time even after it's all mixed. I really only use it if it's a complicated design and don't have time. It really does work great but I do prefer wood burning tools because with this method you don't get any depth to your design whatsoever. But I've stained the wood afterwords and sealed with poly and I've also used lacquer and the results are fantastic for fake wood burning for lack of a better term
Would this work for handwritten recipes on a cutting board? I'm just wondering how small is too small to be legible, since most people's handwriting is thin.
So I bought torch paste and tried it on a wood tree slice from a branch from my backyard. I made a vinyl stencil, and I applied the torch paste. I let it sit for a few minutes. Then I removed the stencil and placed it under my Cricut Easy Press for 15 seconds at 400 degrees. I didn't touch the Easy Press to the wood. I let it hover above it like in the video. Then I did four rounds of the Easy Press at 400 degrees on the wood slice. However, I didn't have butcher paper. I was worried the paste would leave stains on my teflon sheets, so I just used a the backing sheet from a piece of contact paper, and I put that over my wood slice as a barrier between the Easy Press and the wood. But no matter how many times I hit it with the Easy Press, the wording is still orange- like I'm talking Orange soda orange. It definitely doesn't look like the wood burn effect. Is it because I'm not using butcher paper? Even before I put it under the Easy Press, the color of the torch paste after I removed the vinyl stencil was a much brighter orange than what it looks like in your video. Any tips??? What am I doing wrong? Is the lack of butcher paper the secret here that is causing my orange effect to happen?
I had the same issue. Heat press at 400 increased pressure, still orange. not enough paste? my 2 samples turned out good, the one for a gift not so much. will keep trying
So do you recommend not using a Teflon sheet here as the sheet will absorb the torch paste so you can’t reuse the Teflon sheet (at least in that spot)?
Yes you can make tons at home ! 1 teaspoon of ammonium chloride, 2 1/2 teaspoon thick-it and 4 teaspoons of water. You can make bigger batches. That’s just a days worth for me
Yes you can ,just never stain the wood beforehand as it won't come out great at all play around on scrap wood first with the tones you want to make sure the stain isn't too dark to see your design, that's all
Yes you can use a paint brush for sure and honestly I think it's the best way to apply it as you can literally make wood grain effects in whatever pattern you want by the way you do your brush strokes. You can see the pattern you're making as you're brushing it, and it looks much better in my opinion as well as everyone I've showed it to
@@HVACRTECH-83 Because I just watched a video titled How to Use Torch Paste Gel for Wood Burning with a Heat Press! If someone is going to make an instructional video, then it should include all of the instructions. And I'm not your pal.
