My latest test: I just plugged in my 1st Gen iPod into my 2017 iPad thru the Apple USB 3 camera connection kit. Voila! Worked perfectly. Can play the music thru the iPad from the iPod. One caveat; being so old, the iPod uses short cryptic file names so you never know what’s going to play, but plays perfectly and responds promptly to start, stop etc. good fun!

What would be a good idea is to test a few usb keys and make a list of those who do not require too much power from the iphone to work. It would really be helpful for the consumer to know what usb keys will be compatible with the dongle !

I’m trying to find a good flow transferring video files recorded on my iPhone to my pc, this seems like a better solution that plugging my iPhone directly into my pc, well, wait...maybe iOS 13 made it easier to do that....in the past the video files were scattered into multiple folders

Hey there. I actually use WiFi file sharing most often to transfer large files. I find it quicker and more convenient than any other method. I mean…you couldn’t copy and paste text until half way through the life of the third iPhone. The first two never had copy and paste. Or change your wallpaper. Or Bluetooth a photo to a friend. People think apple are innovative but they aren’t. They make a great user experience, but don’t innovate at anything. And I’ve two iPhones and an iPad so I’m not a hater.

I switched to a droid with a better camera long, long ago for this reason. It was such a first world assumption that everyone always has access to the cloud. I bridge the divide with a droid phone and an iOS tablet.

This is great - thanks for the vid!! Just wondering it it works for transferring SD card to an external hard drive? So I would use the cable (in your vid), a USB port which I have my external drive and SD card reader connected. Can I then transfer the items from the SD card to external drive directly (i.e. bypassing the iPhone storage)? I am hoping this would replace the RAVPower file hub.

Hey there. I have used multiple USB drives at once and used this to transfer from an SD card reader to a USB drive (using a powered USB hub). I’ve been looking into buying a iPhone flash drive, but it felt pointless since I have a flash drive already. So I looked into the Lightning cable adapter and it’s functionality, and is surprising to find out that they just recently included the use of Flash drives. I guess Ill be getting a adapter soon. Of course yes on both, I do have a few brain cells! I did also listen to your video. The drive I am really interested in is a Kingston Hyperx Predator 512GB with 300gb of map/images (I think .gif type) contained in files in turn in a folder. Compiled with a PC from download. But 2 other devices picked from my drawer at random (1TB SS memory drive with nothing or almost nothing on it, and another random smaller thumb drive) also generated NOTHING in the Files app.

I guess you could see your battery. Latest iPhones have stronger battery and also there are independent batteries you can connect with your phone if you need more power.

Just buy a Sandisk/PNY iXpand device. Save your self the headaches with the power supply. Especially if on the go. This video would be a alternative option, which is also not bad.

Hey there! Thanks so much for your kind words. I tend to lean towards brand names for things like this. I use a Kingston one, but there are good ones from Sandisk too. This is the one I use. amzn.to/39fiKV7 It’s cheap and solidly built, and always been fast and reliable for me.

very good video, however, I'm still wondering. I was going to buy a 16gb USB and put tv series on it to watch when I'm away without internet. Will I still have to download individual episodes onto my device before being able to watch? I thought it could stream it direct from the USB as it were? If so I likely won't have enough space to download individual episodes before watching.

Hi Pete, I noticed in your Locations list in the Files app you have a folder for a SanDisk iXpand drive. When I plug my iXpand drive into either my iPhone or the iPad I don't either of the folder icons for the iXpand or the About time icon. Is there some other setting changes I need to do to acheive this? Great video BTW, very well explained, pity I can't apply your steps as the iXpand is not recognised for some reason. Hey Ron. Once the Sandisk app is installed it should show up in the list of locations you can add, but you need to go in and add it as it won’t show up by default. Really depends on the file formats and playback device. A lot of music on mobile devices is copy protected or has DRM so can’t be transferred.

Hi Pete. Have you tried using the Lightning to USB 3 adapter with a hard disk drive. will it also power the HDD or do I need a powered USB Hub?

I haven’t personally tried it but have seen others do it. Apparently if your hard drive is externally powered it will work as long as it is FAT formatted. If it is a portable USB powered drive it will not work as will not get enough power. More testing to come!

@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete. I just bought the Lightning to USB3 adaptor. It was able to access some of my HDDs consistently. But I find it inconsistent for WD Wireless Pro HDD, the first time I tried it, it was able to recognize it. Now it doesn't anymore. I just wonder what made it work the first time.

They could’ve improved it more by having a popup saying done for video files 🤔 When I was on Android, I was desperate cuz I wanted to download a lot of mp3 files and when I switched over to iOS, life was easy since I had to pay for most of them despite the fact that some songs are unavailable for iTunes (examples: money by mystery skulls, undercover by dr Dre ft snoop dogg, etc.) Also, are mp3 files compatible with GarageBand, and is there a way to see how much power a USB device or card reader takes up?

Hey there. Thanks for your feedback. To answer your questions. 1. No, there isn’t any way to determine how much power a device uses - it will just say “yep”, or “nope” by working or not. 2. I bought a 2T portable hard drive and formatted it to xFat on my hp laptop, then transferred files onto it. Bought the hub and the lightening connectors, the apple lightening connector does not have a C end to fit into the ipad. Found another connector that did work and plugged everything in and it read the file that I had transferred. Transferred some more files and now the ipad will not bring up the Toshiba hard drive, won’t read and also my lap top won’t read it now. Stumped as to why it first worked and now it doesn’t.

Yes. Pretty much any file types can be transferred using a USB drive.

Can I use this method to take a ton of photos to move off my I phone to make space? I am looking at a 256GB flashdrive. I try to save some money because the lightening apple flash drives are about 3 times the cost. IF I can use that converter from your video it should work, right? It’s not necessary to use a custom method for compression? There’s a built in ability via either a long press contextual menu OR by choosing “more”, though siri shortcuts do allow for extended abilities nonetheless.

Hi, I would have several question on it and I hope I can get the reply..... first is it possible to watch video directly on iPhone when connecting to USB flash drive without copy the video files to my phone ? Second, is it compulsory to have battery supply (charging) on iPhone to connect to usb flash drive? How about if I’m not charging but my phone have 100% battery, is it still works ? Hi there. Some flash drives don’t require extra power to operate, but unfortunately most do in my experience. You can however play back files directly from the USB drive if you wish.

Hey there. Not required with USB drives on iOS. Just make sure any transfers are done and then remove.

Yeah. There’s no “safe removal” or anything similar required on iOS. Kits make sure any active transfers are done and maybe close any apps to be sure.

Is it able to retain the properties of iPhone ‘Live’ photos? In the past I have transferred files from my phone to external hard drives but later when I copied back to my Mac the Live Photos became regular jpg pictures.

Hey there. So, you can now use any USB flash drive and access these in the Files app. I don’t believe you can record photos and videos to the USB drive but you can transfer from the camera roll to the USB drive quite easily. Hi so tonight I downloaded iOS 13 on my iPad Pro 2018, i have a usb hub and I want to move files from one ssd to another ssd. It recognises it but it just doesn’t copy across, the circle just keeps spinning away. Is there a way from to move files from one ssd to another when I have them connected to my iPad (using the hub of course)?

Yeah, so I have done some experimenting and transfers between two devices seems to be possible, but is painfully slow, and without any transfer indicator of time remaining, it seems like transferring large files is not super practical. Maybe try with one or two smaller files to test the functionality and confirm it is actually working?

Surely this device and flash memory transfers megabytes each time and stage of this method ,eating up the total capacity of the phone. Saving into phone files adds same chunk into various chosen places. So soon we have to delete masses or buy a bigger memory phone?

Yes, some apps use their own entire folder instead of a subfolder under “On my iPhone”. But they are indeed still actually on your device’s storage. I think this carries over from when we didn’t have the whole separate iCloud Drive location.

i can’t do this if i don’t have ios13? my phone doesn’t have anymore space available so instead of transferring files Into my phone i want to transfer pictures and videos Out of my phone and into th flash drive. i’ve seen other types of usbs flash drives without all the extra connections where you directly plug in the usb into the phone and transfer your files but i’m not sure about this because i haven’t seen my much youtube videos on them.
