I’m 62. I like to look smart, but I have given up trying to look ‘young’. That is just a totally self defeating course of action. We are the age we are. It’s nice to look the best we can but most of all, looking good is about feeling happy and confident in your skin. And if your clothes are comfortable, it will show on your face. No rules, no unachievable goals, just be yourself and be confident in that.

I agree, we don't need to try to look young. Smart = not frumpy and I think that's what she's trying to say. So much of what is considered proper at our age (I'm almost 76) is totally frump. Personally, I never wear pants. I don't find them particularly comfortable. I don't live in a cold place. I will wear jeans for specific activities and I like shorts in hot weather but trousers as ordinary daily wear, nope. I'm an artist so I do go for slightly artsy looks day to day, but if I go out in the evening, I really go for elegant but with flare. Red is my color.

One of the best things about being almost 60 is that I can wear whatever makes me feel good and is comfortable and not care what anyone thinks. Front tucking looks stupid to me, so I’m not going to do it. I’m 59. I’m not trying to look like fashion plate.

I think we can all wear whatever makes us feel good and comfortable at any age. I'm not sure what almost being 60 has to do with it unless you have somehow become less self-conscious? I think most women tend to feel more confident about their choices as they mature. It's always fun to share tips with each other for those trends that might be more short-lived. I live in a part of the country where capris are a staple to a woman's Spring and Summer wardrobe. Has that particular look ever been fashionable or are you just seeing women over 50 wearing capris that way? I'm not sure age factors in here. It would be unflattering for any age.

I was a personal stylist for five years and found that some women wanted a feeling of comfort and could care less about style rules or what made them look thinner, taller, more on trend, youthful, etc. They wanted to wear what they wanted to wear, no matter what advice I offered. That's okay, but then why would they want a stylist? lol and now, in the same way, I ask why would they watch and comment on this kind of video?

The front tuck is just a "no" from me... A better choice is to choose a top that emphasizes your best features... ie... if you have a nice bustline, then wear a v-neck, or lower cut neck. Empire waist hides tummy bulge. Cold-shoulder helps to disguise flabby upper arms. If the top is dramatic, it will draw the eye away from the bottoms. Long-legged people, or those with nice leg shape can look fine in capris. Petite women should stick with shorter tops, and monochrome looks help to elongate. Your tips are okay, but only for women with your bodytype.

I wear capris in the summer because I don't want to wear shorts, and full length oants would be too hot. Skinny jeans would especially be too hot. Since I have a short torso and long legs, I think they work on me. Although I am sure they are dated.

Great looks but I’m keeping the capris as my legs are my slimmest part and I have very narrow hips BUT a big belly and thick waist!!! So front tucking or any type of tucking feels really alien to me! But a longer top over capris or a shirt over another top might be the way to go?! 😊👍🏻

Totally agree about considering your own preportions. Like you i have thin legs, almost no hips and straight proportions in my torso. Personally i find 7/8 length more flattering for summer pants. I do fine with an empire waist top that hits at about the hip bones. BUT the hem of the top must be straight, if I wear a curved hem, it accentuates a belly. I cannot tuck my top unless I wear an over top of some sort. The tuck looks fine from the front, but from the side- 🥴

We wear capris in warm/hot weather because we no longer wear shorts. Replacing capris with skinny jeans doesn't work because the jeans feel too hot and clingy. Your suggestion about the front tuck and loose hemlines are very hellpful.

Many women (50+ including myself), have stomachs and we want to have them covered. And many of us might be wearing pants that are tight in the gut. So tucking in a shirt, even just in the front, doesn't look great. I don't think that's skinny jeans necessarily look good on everyone. I'm not skinny and I don't look good in them. Many women that wear capri pants wear them because they don't want to wear shorts in the summer. They don't feel like their legs look good for shorts so this is the next best thing.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻for technical side. Firstly I love your energy and enthusiasm and modern approach. I thought great someone addressing the many issues women over 50 face (I turn 60 this year!). You’re blessed with a good figure but unfortunately no so for me. Through medical issues I have gained weight around my middle, and I could take flight with my batwing under arms lol. Truthfully, my issue is actually finding clothing that is aimed for over 50’s that isn’t ‘to me’ frumpy! I may be turning 60 but I’m still young, right! I love fashion and looking well put together. Having had arthritis since the age of 22 my knees are swollen so I can’t wear skinny trousers. Straight leg if I’m lucky. I like modern pull on trousers AND yes, cropped. Pull on gives a smooth wait with no buttons and loops so if a top blows agains you you can’t see that. A good tip I’ve discovered for tops that cling to your backside or just don’t sit well, is wear a slinky camisole underneath. It flows nicely and stops it clinging to your backside 😂. Also, at a certain age, even if you have a good figure, l like tops to come just below the hip. It’s so much more flattering. A half or 3/4 sleeve is a must for me. Everyone knows their own body and problem area’s and how best to dress for you. Tunics are comfortable and stylish in ‘A’ line shapes skimming not clinging. Nothing worse than wearing a top that clings showing every lump and bump ❌. Personally, I think retailers should cater for the older woman too because we still love looking good. It’s all aimed at the younger. At the end of the day it’s about what makes YOU comfortable and how YOU feel. We’re all muddling through it so be kind to each other and have respect. Thank you for taking the time to share with us, you have a lovely smile and upbeat persona which is lovely 🥰

One thing that definitely ages one is showing the knees. You can't fake a young knee, so shorts aren't necessarily the best option. If you are hot, capris are a great alternative. Some of us don't have slim hips even at our thinnest, and dresses emphasize that. There is a reason so many wear capris. I am 60, and refuse to be ashamed of that.

Thank you for sharing tips for us over 50 gals (I'm 56). I'm petite, 5'3", weigh 105. I loathe the front tuck. Even on younger gals it looks ridiculous. I live where we have over 100 degree summers and negative wind chill winters. In colder weather, leggings are good with a long loose top or sweater and a nice scarf if I'm feeling like dressing it up a bit. I also wear slim fit jeans. In warmer weather, longer floaty skirts or dresses are a fave. But I also wear capris with a long short sleeve top. My legs are thin, and honestly I like the way capris look. No shorts or sleeveless tops for me. I have a larger chest, and have never felt comfortable showing too much. All this said, as I tell my young grands, if everyone liked the same things what a dull world this would be.

I wear capris in the tropics. Hint - they work if they are slim fitting and end just exactly below the knee. That way, the hem is not at the widest part of your calf. Similar to your last look but if you shortened the capris by 3 inches. Like bermuda shorts but just covering the knee. In a monochrome color with the top, visually it is 2/3 and 1/3. Works really well with a linen blend in tropical heat, especially nice in white.

Actully, I embrace being 5'2". What can I do about it? I was taught that "good things come in small packages." I never try to elongate my look but people always are surprised when I tell them how little I am. Beautiful posture, carriage and gait are the best ways to "elongate" your look. Think ballet dancers. Oh, and because I have a long waisted hour glass figure, I NEVER wear belts or set in waists. I try to avoid skirts and tops but sometimes I must wear them. Even casual dresses look too dressy sometimes.

Capris are the go to for women who are no longer comfortable wearing shorts, yet want to have some skin open to the air. Skinny jeans do not replace capris in warm climates, though they might in England. There are new cropped pants, which are wide, and are only slightly longer than capris. It's a very modern look, and is even cooler than capris because you not only have the short length, but also more air around the leg. Nancy Caroll wears these pants to great effect in Murder in Provence. And there's no need to shop if you have a pair of light, wide-leg pants in your closet that you can hem.

Yes there are many alternatives. This is just one example for temperate climate . In hot areas o lke maxis skirts, linen shorts, linen trousers, and cropped wide legged pants. Thank you for contributing to the discussion and watching.

I love how thoroughly you explain proportions created by clothing. My body has changed (I used to be extremely thin and not curvy) after two children and what I thought I knew about dressing my body doesn't work anymore. It gets frustrating and some of what you said was stuff I knew, but you took it a step further and I think these concepts are going to help me look good in the clothes I already have. I'm just not putting them together right.

I took a hard look in the mirror at myself in capris, and it was true!!! I have since cut mine off into bermuda shorts since I live in Galveston, Tx. I live that look better on me, and it's a win, win since it's so dang hot here!!!! It still covers my jiggle, looks better, AND is cooler!!! I also have started wearing a lot more lightweight knee length skirts, which I find so much more flattering, fun, and cooler too. It's all about what you like, and changing tastes I guess. I have always like change though!!

It’s interesting that “looking older” is an insult. Remember when we all wanted to look older? It meant you were cooler, more mature, sexier. At what point does it stop being all or any of those things? Is it when we are no longer sexually desirable? So many more important questions to ponder rather than waste my one precious, finite life wondering if my pants are too short.

I've got a fabulous tailor who cuts mine off & hems them right at my knee cap. I also wear lots of skirts because it's hot & skirts at the knee are breezy. REALLY happy you do not require elbow length sleeves…. But I do! My preference would be sleeveless or short sleeves in hot weather, however, my uncovered arms look far worse than “telling my age” by sporting elbow length sleeves! I also like 3/4 length sleeves, but find them hard to locate. I truly dislike roll-up tab sleeves…. ugly, old fashioned, hot and uncomfortable! Wish there was an additional choice for problem arms! Sigh. So far, I have resisted those awful just below the knee length pants! But it is SO hot here during our long, humid and ever so hot spring through very late fall temps! Thanks for your offerings! You give us many helpful hints…. And I try to utilize all that work FOR me!

I'm with you on the sleeves. Elbow-length sleeves have better proportions for me, too; Regular short sleeves stop right at my bustline, which isn't an attractive proportion. It just isn't a good look for me. Cap sleeves are even worse. I have heavy upper arms and I don't need a frame around them as if they were a work of art.
