This week Steve Genson talks about how to work the Hell Hound a popular musky fishing lure from Drifter Tackle. The Hell Hound is a great glide bait option that really shines all season long. I picked up a 9" squirrely hellhound from TRO in the Genson perch pattern. It was the hot lure for me this year. The fish in my profile pic was caught on it. In total I caught 9 of the 13 fish I caught this season on it. The one modification I made to it was adding a screw to the back for the tail. I drilled a small pilot hole then screwed in a screw and cut off the head. So now I don't lose the tail from hook rash and no glue to add a new one. Just twist it on.

Excellent info. The smaller version works great in spring. Cast it right up to shore, give one pop and a long pause, then start the retrieve. Caught 3 last year on Moose Lake with that technique. Fishing it next to downed trees.

Hellhounds are definitely one of the easiest working glide baits. I would recommend them to people just starting out because theyre so easy to work, all you have to do is reel and it will go side to side.

How long would you recommend when fishing for musky before you change up baits and location ?

Well since I've been on the water lots and lots I kinda have an idea what to throw where and when so I don't change a ton. I would find a confidence bait and fish it for awhile assuming it's appropriate for the depth of water you're fishing and where the bait is setup. If you have multiple anglers fishing try different approaches until someone has action. I know its kinda vague but hopefully that helps. Good luck

What is that reel? Ive been considering just getting a piscifun alijoz 300 to replace my calcutta 400b only for some outings, just for glidebaits :)

That is an Abu Garcia Beast. The ratio doesn't seem to matter a ton. You'd just want to make sure the bait has some erratic action with the pause.

Brendan Spencer I prefer a higher pickup for rubber. I don’t make large movements with the rod where I have lots of slack line.

@@TeamRhinoOutdoors i been trying to catch a tiger for the longest time, and im fishing shallow rivers. Overall i need suggestions. Im thinking a st croix premier musky mh, and a tranx 300 for small lures since i already have a rod for big stuff.

No wrong way to work a hellhound. I've burnt it back on a straight retrieve in 38° water and had them cream it. actually had a 5 fish day in cold water like that.

If you could only purchase 4 Muskie lures to fish the entire year, what would they be? (Limited fishing budget 😂)

+Patrick Fahie if I had to pick 4 lures I’d get a glide bait (Hell Hound or Phantom Lure), a dive and rise jerkbait (Suick or Bobbie), a bucktail (Musky Mayhem Jack Rabbit or Double Showgirl), and a Rubber Bait ( Bulldawg or Medussa). If I had to pick a 5th I’d get a crankbait. I’m sure if you ask many people you’d get a variety of answers. These baits are assuming you’re casting for musky. I would suspect many would put a topwater on the list also but year in and year out I catch most of my fish on the following baits. I hope that helps.

As someone who does fish on a budget. My main 4 lures are a #8 double bucktail, spinnerbait for thick weed cover, jointed crankbait (my favorite is a believer), glide bait (hellhound or manta),

Team Rhino Outdoors thanks so much. I just acquired a hybrid Muskie/bass setup with my rod rated up to 2 ounces. I realize that’s smafor most Muskie fishing but luckily at least three of those baits you mentioned have a small version under the 2 ounce limit. I don’t get out enough to exclusively fish Muskie so any fish is a good one. The smaller musky baits will probably be decent for large bass also (2-5 lbs). Love the videos, especially talking about gear. Thanks
