Its good the ccp has seemed to at least somewhat admit that for decades, local officials may have overstated gdp growth for promotions. So it helps to fix the data (although i dont envy the mess they have to deal with) and better inform economic policy. For the united states, being open about social issues helps them to build a more peaceful and dynamic nation. That said, neither the us govt nor the prc economy will likely collapse in my opinion, they have their issues and their setbacks, and will learn from past mistakes. At the end of day, as long as countries respect each other, and citizens have stable jobs, finances, and families and friends and good morals...maybe thats best.

As with all news and headlines you read on the internet, I believe you have to dial back the severity and direness of an issue by like 60% of what you read online. Information on the internet is incentivized to be sensationalized and over-dramatic to grab people's attention. Most of the internet operates on advertising revenue which is completely reliant on clicks and "high-value actions" from the users. The more eye-catching a headline, the more clicks/HVAs, and the more revenue for any content creator or publisher. So any news about anything that seems catastrophic is always way less severe in the real world when you actually go outside and look around. In this case with China's economy, obviously their economy isn't in the greatest shape, but it's not going to completely crash and burn and implode China's existence. A severe recession is likely, but that's about it.
@Shadowboost
@Shadowboost Год назад
Severe recession is what the news is referring to. But if you think deeper. Severe recession reduces foreign investment and technology transfer, as well as a shift in labor. US and the west is already moving location of manufacture out of China. That will only increase exponentially with the looming risks in China. The housing market bubble in China could easily by itself destroy the economy, making 2008 look like a blip in the timeline. Now cut the factory workforce (zero COVID has already shut down Foxconn) on top of that and you have a major depression. Unemployment is very high and increasing every day, meanwhile more and more students are going into a low wage market taking on manual labor

China will not collapse and I think a bit of a correction will be good for China clean out some of the mal investment particularly in third tier infrastructure and housing then investment. They can focus on more productive uses which is going to be essential for growing while the population is shrinking, basically China will need to double productivity to stand still.

The main reason is that China’s economy is collapsing all the time for 20 years in western media. When you hear this for 20 years and your life still prosper, you can not take western media seriously. I joined a webinar of fidelity a few weeks ago and China actually had the lowest inflation rate. The world economy is in slow regression and China is definitely affected, however still the fastest growing economy just not as fast as it used to be.

Actually, these people on the street are indoctrinated mostly by their state media. They do not have an accurate assessment of the situation. It's interesting that they stated awareness of the many issues that China is undergoing, but simply have confidence (and blind faith) that it isn't as bad as the west makes it out to be. Like how many stated they were unemployed and or had little income, had to save more, etc. Stating that inflation was felt, but was a global phenomena. Well guess what, yes, it's a global phenomena with which the west acknowledges is a serious recession risk. The housing conundrum that China has put itself in is significantly worse than the rest of the world, especially given how high of a percentage of their economy rides on that. China's GDP is still growing, that man is correct, but he is dead wrong when he said it was growing faster than other countries. It is actually growing slower than the rest of Asia and even slower than the US, which has a much higher GDP and GDP per capita!

As a Chinese I am much more pesimisstic about the economy not only because the pendamic and the closure would interrupt bussiness but also because the flourish of the house market has come to the dead end. Many cities don't have other substainable industry but rely too heavily on the house market. Now the bubble has broken, and the finace has worsened immensively in many cities and most of them, paralysed by easy income from house market, do not have alternatives. That is the most essential danger of chinese economy and even if there were notcovid-19 this mine would still detonate early or later.

actually, people in shanghai are more pessimistic than other parts of China. Life in Shanghai is more stressful and fast paced while other smaller cities are more laid back. Real estate difficulties will pass like all economic related crisis. income of these unsustainable towns and cities will decrease and as it should be. Some of these smaller towns and cities looks ridiculously overbuilt and trying to catch up to first tier cities without first investing on their base industries. Chinese economy will take a hit but not as much or dire as predicted as most of the real estate value are not in the small cities but in large cities with real industries and solid economic foundation. These types of problems always have a solution and if not, what so bad about slower growth or smaller economy? Most of these debts are loaned to state subsidiaries by the state itself. These debt can be eventually written off. China will survive a normal economic downturn and recession like any other major economy. nothing special about it. What really is concerning is social issues such as demographic, family values, etc. The society has become far too westernized and its heading the same direction as the western societies but with poorer population. People refused to get married and procreate even for the rich and well paid middle class just like westernized societies but at a worse rate. Don't worry about expensive housing, at these rate, we should worry about empty and cheap homes. Free education, health care all those social subsidies to help promote birth did not work in the west and is having no effect in China as well. This is something to be pessimistic about, not some temporary bubble bursting by the central gov to support a more sustainable economy.

@@turtlesoup8134 interesting take, but for the most part, misguided. The support for the CCP has been based upon one thing and one thing alone. The increase in standard of living for many Chinese. When that is taken away through the economic downturn and hundreds of thousands lose their homes and life savings, what do you think happens? When the factories in China no longer produce iphones, clothes, shoes, electronics because the west has moved it to Vietnam, Philippines, India, etc? When the worst drought in modern history reduces crop yield, increases energy demands, reduces worker productivity? China is literally one big recession away from never being the same again. Many countries NEVER RECOVERED after their economic downturn. Look at Venezuela. Look at the Soviet Union Zero COVID, which will be forever since COVID is never leaving the human race (endemic like Flu and influenza now), will cap China and already has. As far as "social values", it's a two fold reason. One is economic, it is simply too expensive to raise a child in China with low wages, high tutoring costs, high real estate prices, and high unemployment. Second is related to work/life balance expectations in China and Asia in general. Having children requires a time commitment in direct conflict with the extreme work demands in Chinese culture. It simply isn't compatible, which is why lie flat culture is significantly on the rise

@turtlesoup8134 Год назад
@@Shadowboost No, outsider always assume that CPC's legitimacy solely lies on improving people's live. Its much much more than that or else the CPC would have been overthrown after the cultural revolution or the great leap forward. After the pandemic started, the economic situation also drastically worsen compared to the booming years and yet it is still by far a more stable societies compared to many developing nations. Having said that, improving people's live do play a big part of its legitimacy as should any gov in any country. I can hardly imagine any population in the world would not want their gov to improve their living standard. A drop in living standard is devastating for most gov including those in the developed countries as it should be. Getting rid of colonial powers, reunifying China, strong military, socialist ideology, low corruption rejuvenation of Chinese culture, etc all contributes to its legitimacy. As i have said before when it comes to social values, China is heading towards crisis. its really not about just the money when it comes to child bearing its much more than that. Women's empowerment and ability to choose is one of the main ones. My wife has just gone through hell to give birth to our first child and after witnessing that, why would any women with good career and comfortable life wants to go through that? The social security system is good enough to cover many medical cost in larger cities and their pension is taken care off from savings and gov pension. Why even bother to get married for that matter? Many women live well in major chinese cities without husbands. If money is the only factor then you will see many rich people having 3 child, but that is not the case at all in first tier cities. many of the rich don't even want to marry, they can have all the best partners or companion they want with money. They can change them when ever they see fit. It is in fact the poor that have more children as they have more traditional views and reliance on their children in the future.

No, its very normal and what they described is actually true. The majority of the economic driver is not the mom and pop shops that are closing from the pandemic. The large companies in China is not as effected by the lockdown or able to whether the lockdown better than these small businesses. As a result, the economy took a hit but is not in a severe recession like in the west where the crisis also hit their major industries and small industries alike. The consumption in China has taken a hit but consumption contribution in the economy is still not as high as developed western economy. Manufacturing in China is doing well and barely got slowed down by the pandemic. Another major downside is the gov drive to crack down in the real estate sectors, but this is also temporary and is hitting mostly the smaller cities and towns where the bubble is most unsustainable. Overall, the economy is still healthy but it is definitely not the pre pandemic economy where almost every sector is red hot. many people are used to those good times and now they have to adjust to live a more normal economic growth while the rest of the west is in recession. Inflation is minor and only in certain items like fuel and certain food items, but it no where close to inflation rate in the west.

I believe people should be more worried about China's economy. I feel they say everything is alright while they have to struggle everyday and can't even buy the ultimate security symbol, a house. Their culture is very strong on being patriotic.

guess why they all seem worried but chill at the same time? because majority of the population in Shanghai, or any other big cities, are migrant workers from non-urban areas, and in China, land in non-urban areas belongs to the people, so even if they cant buy a house in city, they could always get a land in their home, building at their own cost ofcoz, but land is free, so they ARE struggle to buy a house in cities, but they have securities at home

Inflation in China is in the top 10 in the world but Turkey easily has highest inflation in the world.. a lot can be traced back to the pandemic However! what China is facing is their housing crisis in big cities which is much more of an issue than the inflation of the yuan
@RayDu
@RayDu Год назад
Inflation in China (between 2% and 3%) is actually among the lowest in the world. And the so-called "housing crisis" is not much more than Western media narrative. Sure, the housing market is not in perfect shape, but where are the "implosions" and 'hard landing" that the media is hyping?

I’m impressed with how much the people understand despite government censorship, however I wonder if the general population in areas outside of Shanghai would be so knowledgeable and thoughtful. I have serious doubts. The people of Shanghai don’t represent most Chinese.

In fact, you know too little about China. Assuming that Chinese young people (in video) lack the ability to think independently, it is impossible for China to continue to develop for 40 years. China’s rapid growth in the past 40 years has not only brought wealth to the Chinese people, but also knowledge and reasoning
