How YouTube has ruined it for real motorcyclists

It's starting to feel like the end for real motorcyclists. I might be the only one feeling this way, but social media (Especially RU-vid) has truly felt like it is beginning to alienate viewers based on the type of content being showed. The whole reason I started this channel was to resonate with the NORMAL people of the world. The grocery getters, the highway cruisers, weekend warriors. And now I feel like all anyone is being shown is over the top glorification of what motorcycling "Should" be. Just my thoughts as of late. What do you think?

I have got sick of the bigger RU-vid content creators just basically advertising for manufacturers. I realize that is how they get paid and get free stuff, but dang. The average person is not constantly upgrading their bikes. Heck, a lot of us can’t even afford one Harley Davidson, let alone multiple bikes. I really appreciate you saying this out loud. The videos you did recently about your mom’s bike was real. The upgrades your husband did were realistic that most of us could actually do. Keep it real and I think people will keep watching. All the best to you.

I could not agree more!! The vast majority of us will never get a chance to buy a brand new Harley or Indian while the bigger channels are buying them just to strip them down and dump another 20k into building them. I'd rather watch someone turn a 10-15 year old Harley into a reliable show stopper with the wildest modification being a cool paint job.

You know Jess.....Us old timers(the ones who have followed you a long while) are still here because you're real. You keep it real. It's relaxing, informative and fun watching your adventures. We understand this isn't the Truman Show nor are we expecting it to be. If you need to take a break, do it. Just let us know please! We love you two, and Midge. I don't do any other social media stuff. Just you tube. It's really nice to find channels that aren't trying to constantly sell me something, show off or tell me only their opinion matters. So, just keep us informed. Be good! And we'll see you later 😉. Wishing you both nothing but the best. Steve

Hey girlfriend! I've asked myself the same question: What did I do before social media? I came across the answer not too long ago, when I went through a box of old At-A-Glance weekly planners I used to keep for work in the late '90s through about 2010. I went through a few of them, and I noticed I was busy every single weekend. I had dinner dates every single weekend with friends. Per the planners, sometimes I'd meet up with friends for lunch and dinner during the week, too!! THAT'S what we did before social media. We had REAL relationships with REAL friends.

Hey Jess. Honestly you were the type of creator I was looking for. Haven’t ridden since I was 13 and wanted to be taken along on rides, which is what you do for us. The encouragement for women riders and being able to go along for the ride is invaluable. The travel and the freedom we can live through you is awesome. Saving for my own first bike and can’t wait. Thank you for what you share with us. Bec from Gold Coast Australia

I was about to give up on my little bike, then you said in one of you videos that one day your husband fixed something about your exhaust and sounded beautiful and you said you grab your bike as if "now or never" and that keept you riding til this day. Well, same thing happened to me when i watched that video and grab my little bike and ride a few kms, you give me so much motivation and i thank you for that, keep up the good work, blessings from Monterrey, Mexico

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this video. When I started watching your channel, it always felt like I was getting to hang out, go along for a ride and get coffee...and talk about whatever. Since my son started riding a year ago, my wife would go two up with me on my Ultra Ltd. and him on his Duece and would just go ride. And, talk via comms. We do that even more now. I CHERISH these times with my family, on a motorcycle. I LOVE this type of content. Well done, Ma'am. And thanks for letting me ride along. Be safe.

Although I am guilty of it myself, nobody seems to be able to wait... just wait... for a bus or at the Doctor's surgery, without getting out the mobile phone and checking social media. Nobody looks through the magazines in waiting rooms anymore. I went to pick up my daughter from school and there was a row of cars with parents sitting inside ...each with a mobile phone in their hands and looking down. I knew the lady in the next car but I couldn't get her attention to say hello. I have deliberately begun to just wait, without my phone, it's very refreshing just to sit and think and daydream a little. Social media and mobile phones are an addiction. We need them but people are forgetting to talk to each other, on the street or in a queue. Riding is a great way to be free and be with your own thoughts or listen to music. You are so right Jess!

When I first starting riding back in 2015 I watched a ton of motovloger youtubers. But, to your point, either the content didn't mature or change, but most youtubers just weren't interesting to watch to me anymore. I skip a lot of your videos, to be honest, because you typically don't ride motorcycles that interest me. But I try to catch the videos you take of you going places, I really enjoy just having other riders share their experiences and rides. I sympathize with your situation and the changing dynamics of youtube/the fickle attention spans of viewers. Don't be bound to this experience if you aren't enjoying it. If the arrow of your life is pointing away from youtube, maybe take a break from that. I enjoy your content when I catch it and you seem like a really great ambassador of the lifestyle, but you won't hurt my feelings if you stopped posting videos or took a turn in a different direction. I think your struggle will resonate far beyond other youtubers so I encourage you to document and post your struggles. Some might give you flake but I would hope enough of your audience would stick around and encourage you on your journey. And you might pick up new friends from that experience. Love your collabs with shadetree, you guys are a lot of fun together. Good luck and I will catch your videos later!

the people i subscribe to i just watch all their stuff in the background while working. if i havent seen a creator for a while ill seek them out incase youtube has pulled some type of shenaniganry which they do sometime. but yeah while im slaving away at a desk it makes the day go much faster when i can live vicariously through other people on motorcycles. i cummute on my bike to work every day of the year where there is no ice on the ground or im not extremely tired which is very rare, but i need more bike time than commuting affords me so watchign you and the others i sub to ride helps me get through the day!

Post what you are passionate about. I like to explore the back dirt roads on my XR150 looking for old farmsteads and public areas, sloughs, creeks and rivers all accessible by a dual sport or 4 wheel drive. Here in Iowa there are many public hunting areas, old cemeteries and buildings to photograph. Even historical markers out in the countryside. I am a retired pro photographer and love finding scenic or interesting places on the bike which is relaxing. Your videos are well done and show how much you love motorcycles, and that is what I find appealing about your content.

This is why you are actually my favorite motovlogger. It's inspired me to want to ride again. I never cared to ride with groups, I never cared to be the fastest, and most of all I just wanted to enjoy the ride. So I very much enjoy watching a kindred spirit when I get online. These days it's all about reckless riding, or building the biggest craziest engine. It may get views but I'd rather see someone hit roads I've only dreamed about, or someone take a high milage bike I could afford and turn it into a reliable, beautiful bike ya know. I scroll through marketplace looking at different types of bikes and sit and draw designs for building the ones that catch my eye. Can I afford to actually do it... Noooo but I enjoy it. Just my thoughts. You're channel is what it's supposed to be and that resonates with us lowly commoners who just love motorcycles.

As someone who also studies youtube growth channels, you do have to be creative in how you present your content because you can have the greatest content in the world but if you want to share those experiences, you do have to find ways to bring people to your content while being true to yourself and true to the audience. It’s a fine line for sure but I live your content and your adventures inspire me and I just subscribed, God bless you and your journey. 😊

Jess, you described me as the person who just wants to escape and go for a ride. I took yesterday off work and rode 2 hours from home just to test ride a Road King I was interested in. I enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

I'm 48 and just learning to ride. Seeing your travels and hearing of my father's travels, make me want to follow my bikes front wheel.

Interesting video Jess! Social media is different for everyone. I watch a lot of RU-vid and actually laugh at some of the “click bait”. I click on your videos because I know what they are like regardless of “Titles”. However, I avoid Facebook! I have to scroll through so much that I am not interested in that it isn’t worth my time. I only get on to look at those that I follow intentionally. Otherwise, I am out! Of course I am old school and figure that my life has enough drama in it that I certainly don’t want to bring more in from social media! I don’t get to ride nearly as much as I would like and I simply enjoy watching you on the seat of two wheels and seeing parts of the country that I might never get to see on my bike! Love what you do! Thanks for sharing!

More and more friends and people I get to talk to are also wanting less time with the phone attached to our hands. It is so time consuming we forget about time for ourselves. So you saying out loud, and wanting to align to what will make you happy is great. I love your content. I also love riding motorcycles. I do like you are not trying to up yourself every time. I do love how you meet random other motorcyclist on you adventures. I say make what ever your heart wants to do. Is it riding, is it painting, drawing, reading, or just chillin with the hubby. Maybe if you start those things up again, you will post a video and not have to think you just do. Letting your viewers ride along with you as you talk to us. I am happy your are finding your way back to you. You Go Girl.

I am back on bikes after 8 years off due to work changes etc. and subscribed, because I wanted real reviews and hints for riding and camping (as I have no friends I do solo...). You are living THE life, but remember to live YOUR version of THE life. Have now followed your FB page. Love your content the way you are. Remember that we all grow over time if you change, we will probably change with you.

Yes Jess ..Ditch the Harley crap .. go back to your roots and get a Quality Engineered Japanese Bike... Ride for the sake of riding... I was really disappointed when you had to do what newbies in the USA do and got a Harley ...

I only watch a few RU-vid channels so I don’t spend a lot of time on it. I don’t look at face book much or really social media in general for all the same reasons you mentioned. I’m all for riding bikes and hanging out with friends. I took today off and just got back from riding on such a beautiful day.

I get what you're saying. When I search around RU-vid, I also sense that some of the content creators I watch are forcing videos on here just to stay on top of mind instead of giving me something interesting. For me, watching a motorcycle video is about the ride, the scenery, and the comradery between the friends who ride together. My wife's and my little video channel is just a place to keep our ride memories within hands reach for us to reminisce about with our friends and family. We've been riding only for 4 years and being in my 50s, this adventure has been enhanced by watching channels like yours to give us ideas on trips to go to, what gear is best, and the do's and don'ts of the riding culture. I'm looking from the outside, but once a channel becomes successful, it tends to have the creator enter into a place where they feel the need to keep posting anything to keep the monetary benefits from fading. Which could lead to water-downed content. Keep it as real as you can and try your best to balance the benefits of a successful channel and your personal happiness.

I personally am on RU-vid more than Facebook and watch alot of your content because you are my top fav female RU-vidr and I like the way you don't hold back on saying things. You ride all bikes, and that is amazing to. I love the way you put you content together and your video style is amazing. I'm glad to here you want to get back into your art 😊 you are an amazing artist from what you have previously showed. Good for you Jess, it's good to focus on one's self and not get to caught up in trying to please others all the time. Thank you for all you do😊 From one female rider to another. Lot's of love and respect to you.

Hey there! Another Central Ohio rider here! Your videos inspired me to start doing some moto vlogging. I loved your comments about reinventing yourself every 5 or so years, and craving returning to old hobbies and interests. It's so true, and I think it's healthy to do that! You've talked about burnout a few times in the past year, too. I've been dealing with that A LOT. I made some videos talking about burnout and my experience with it and recovering from it. They're on my channel if you or any of your viewers want to check them out. It has been a wild ride, and my bike (a 2010 Dyna Super Glide a lot like yours) helped me get through it. Throttle Therapy FTW!!
