Ramsey Dewey and TJ discuss the recent UFC match between the champion Zhang Weili and former UFC champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk. How is this Chinese female fighting champion viewed in her own country right now? How did PPTV win an enormous multi million dollar gamble of an investment when suddenly millions of Chinese citizens who had never even seen the UFC before subscribed to their UFC viewing service after hearing of Zhang Weili’s success. What actually happened in the fight? And how could Zhang Weili improve to ensure she has staying power in the sport?
This is a segment from the Ramsey Dewey Podcast recorded at the UFL gym in Shanghai, China。

Zhang is a breath of fresh air in the UFC. Her personality is genuine, no "act" or artificial persona. She's completely smashing it out of the park with her English and I'm so happy for her to have won that fight. She's shown nothing but respect and maturity along the way, and it's a great role model for women to emulate in the sport. She's seems very happy so far and I wish her more success on her journey.

It's sad that trash talk has become foundational in fight promotion; to the point where it's pushing the limits to draw people in (Connor vs bus for example). And exceptional fighters like Demetrious Johnson are traded because they are "unmarketable", meaning he wouldn't engage in the trash talking. For me it's refreshing, and I hope Zhang Weili goes far.

I wouldn't say "has become" so much as, "has always been" a part of prize fighting. Mendoza talked mad shit about Humphreys and it's kind of what put boxing on the map in the Americas. It was the first time major papers talked about an overseas fighting event(afaik). It would read tepid nowadays but for the time it was really inflammatory to publicly call someone out in the papers and say they're scared. Especially because boxing in the 1700s was way more like MMA now, and essentially bare knuckle a lot of the time. So there's no way Humphreys was legitimately scared of *anybody*.

"All of your trash talk is useless because I can't understand you, but I know enough of your language to fire back at you, which you can't effectively defend because if you stop talking then i win the verbal encounter, if you keep talking you just look stupid for trash talking someone who doesn't even speak the language".

If you win by a mile then that might be true, but if were talking about a skills comparison then there's plenty of comparison. To say that because Amanda won close fights that means there's no comparison is ridiculous. Especially considering that Valentina has a strong case for having won 3 rounds in their second fight. I guess because Valentina & Rhonda both lost to Amanda they must be on the same level. Doesn't matter if you lose by an inch or a mile right

There is no reason to be an asshole to a stranger. Noone benefits from that. The UFC is a poor representation of "fighters". They adopt larger than life asshole personalities to stand out, be the loudest, and have their name heard. They are not the average person by any means.

@Sapreme
@Sapreme 4 года назад
No where close in terms of skill. GSP cleared out 3 generations of champions, was an elite worldclass striker, and an elite worldclass wrestler. Weili has only had one elite opponent, and it was a very hard fight with a lot of adversity for her. Her striking is elite, but her wrestling is not. She's one of the best womens MMA fighters right now, but she does not stand heads and shoulders above her competition like Nunes or Valentina. Yet. Her legacy has just begun, and she has plenty of time and resources to bring herself to that level. She's going to need to defend her title a few more times before she can enter the conversations of being the best like GSP was.

The "shut up" heard around the MMA world was super effective because it's essentially a double whammy with a cherry on top: 1. You can talk all you want, but it's not effective because I can't understand what you're saying, so you're basically wasting your time on empty bluster. 2. I know enough of your language to come back at you, though! Cherry: u mad? keep talking all you like because I still don't know what you're saying so you're still wasting your breath and looking like a fool! Overall it's a little disappointing that trash talking has more or less become ingrained in MMA, it really was something in the early days back when it was trying to shake off the image as "babaric human cockfighting deathmatches where they lock people in cages", and everyone was trying to be an ambassador for the sport, and we had like Randy Couture and Rich Franklin just being nice and polite in defiance of stereotype. The palm over fist, as I learned it, is it is meant to be symbolic of imposing control over our aggression so as to signify that the ensuing violence is about us testing our skills against each other, not personal, so no hard feelings when the fight's over.

@MasterZhang
@MasterZhang 4 года назад
Likely because JJ tends to spend her pre-fight engaging in MacGregor-esque trash talking antics. The thing about doing that kind of stuff is that you either have to actually win your fight, or you need to actually be funny enough that people will remember your antics. As is, it just seems like she talked a big game about being the queen and the boogeywoman who will dethrone the little girl and then got her face rearranged by said "little girl". Guarantee you that there wouldn't nearly be as much meming about the Weili plastic surgery special if JJ was handling the pre-fight leadup like Randy Couture.

@@MasterZhang I disagree. People can be cruel no matter what. I dislike Joanna, but I think she deserves the respect due an athlete of her calibre. I think it's a bigger overall issue since the reaction would have been very similar if not the same if it was someone like Rose Namajunas. It would happen if it was a Male fighter too. Frankly, I hardly know UFC before Weili's big fight. But I am drawn to this sport by watching her fight with JJ. The fight looks so real but still in a controlled rule-based manner, but I can still feel the beauty and power of physical strength, mental determination and unfiltered violence. I got say, it got my heart pumping. I have heard of Weili to some point before her recent big fight. She was reported many times on life-sytle magazines and TV programmings that promotes gender equality. I lover her personality very much. Under the hood, she holds immense raw power and raw violence under her masterly control. So, on the surface she is rational, reasonable, likable, and sometimes even cute. That reminds me of those Kung Fu grand masters in the old-school Kung Fu movies. Great role model with cool style, armed with impeccable fighting skills and power. Actually, John Cena is somehow in a similar catalogue for my taste. JJ is fine, she is a great warrior, a bit shallow minded if you don't mind me being too blunt. But you just cannot asking too much from people. At the end of the day, JJ is a devoted fighter with great talent and endeavors. That-self is respectable. Any ordinary folk can relate to her, you are not perfect but you can be great if you work very hard. The UFC business need Heroines like Weili to inspire people and bring classiness and sophistication in to this rather young sport, it also need great fighters like JJ to make the sport more relatable and approachable.

Zhang Weili and khabib, what do we learn for this 2 world champ? they both humble in nature

Come now, the business of UFC is spectacle. Weili is the face, Joanna is the heel. The video and the comments sound like they could have been said about Khabib vs Connor. People would do well to remember that UFC bears a close resemblance to WWE (world wrestling entertainment) from that point of view.

tbh.. all of the fighters I have met are really nice. Stephen is abnormally nice though lol.. For real, me and Wonderboy have had like hour long discussions about amazing anime series on IG. TJ Dillashaw is really cool and nice surprisingly.. I met him about 2 months before he lost to Henry Cejudo and had a good conversation with him after he popped for EPO. TJ was really down when I talked to him, so I told TJ the story of Miyamoto Musashi.. a legendary samurai and writer of the 'book of five rings' , who ran from the Battle of Sekigahara in shame.. he went into the mountains and found a Buddhist Monk, who he began learning from. Musashi disappears off of all records for 10 years.. and one day.. he walks into the capital of Japan at the time (Kyoto) and proceeded to whoop the ass of every master in the city with a wooden practice sword.. while his opponents used real sharpened swords. When Musashi fought an opponent with true skill, he would dual wield a short sword and long sword together, being one of the only people to ever truly 'dual wield' swords effectively... long story short.. I won't be surprised at all if TJ comes back in a year and starts whooping some ass.

I agree with a lot of what you guys said, but I actually think that her Shuaijiao works to her advantage because the sweeps and movements for their takedowns are unorthodox to a lot of fighters and the few MMA fighters that implement Shuaijiao style throws and sweeps into their fighting seem to do really well with them. So maybe Zhang needs more Western style wrestling but I hope she doesn't abandoned Shuaijiao because it's a nifty secret weapon for takedowns that most Western fighters aren't used to.

You have to realize that Joanna's talk before fight was just a game. That's not how she rally is. Unfortunately UFC and other MMA organizations promote such behavior to sell more tickets. Joanna just tried to fulfill her promotional part of the contract. She showed her respect to the opponent after the fight, even the fight was very even and some expert says Joanna won.

I feel there is room for all personalities. We can always use more personalities like Zhang..BUT...There is also room for a Joanna..etc..etc Personally imo….If everyone waa like Zhang the Ufc simply wouldn't be as big as it is....And on the opposite side of things if everyone was like Joanna to much chaos and everyone being the same just drowning each other out. I like Zhang (I did think she lost the fight though) and she is so well rounded...Hopefully she continues to have lots of success for many years to come. PS...As far as damage is concerned...I don't think it is weighed by looks?? If Zhang threw ONE punch that caused the Hematoma and then for theory sake didn't land anything at all after....While Joanna did what she did....Did Zhang still do more damage in the way they intend it to be judged??? I would hope not. Although Im sure it plays a part, even if subconsciously. Listening to a few MMa podcasts today (at work secretely 😁) an actual fair amount had it for Joanna...More then I actually suspected. STill, imo, the judging couldn't be wrong no matter what way it went cause it was so close. The most impressive thing shown by Zhang to me was her going the full 5 and never giving an inch whether she was getting caught or doing that to Joanna....Huge part of a great fighter...She obviously has that dog in her.

That hematoma was caused by quite a few shots to different places on jj's forehead, but I've heard so many people implying that's it's just one shot especially Valentina Shevchenko.. at the end of the day, it's the more dominant fighter won the fight.. jj got up from the take downs, but she was taken down a few time.. Zhang fought jj's fight and still was able to do damage. Also Zhang was able to catch jj's kicks and in turn thowing jj down for takedowns. That's dominant.. jj wasn't able to do the same.. i like both fighters, but i really don't like to see this much damage on JJ..

I think TJ is absolutely correct in his analysis and recommendations for Wei Li to bring her fight skills to the next level. I would like to add that she spend more time sparring in Muay Thai fighting and grappling and less time on strength drills. Khabib spends a lot of time on grappling with 5-7 wrestlers non-stop with the partners changing every 3-5 minutes and that is one of the key factor to his success.

Hi Ramsay. You are almost like ”over the net” coach to me. I need example of good training routine for entire week(what should i do Monday, Tuesday etc.). I understand that there must be at least one day without training. What kind of training program you would build if you consider that i am not professional, but i have lot of time to use to train? Now i have no fixed training program, but i train something like this: Gym 3 times at week(deadlift, squat, bench press, different routines with medicine ball and kettlebell, situps), running about 5 km or more or swimming, training with heavybag, double end bag and speedpag. Sometimes i jump with rope. As soon as i find training partner, i will add training mitt sessions to my training routine. Saturday is the day i rest. My gym days are usually: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have trained Taekwondo, Han Moo Do and Boxing with live trainer. Now i train alone. I use RU-vid videos as training resource. I am 41 years old male. I am from Finland, so English is not my native tongue, so i am sorry, if something is unclear in my message to you. Later i would like to train BJJ and wrestling so i would be better allaround fighter. I know that is vital to sleep enough and eat healthy. I have added vegetables and berries to my dinners, and now i eat less candies and soda. Why i train? Because i love to train. It just feels right and good. And i like to stretch my physical and mind boundaries. To achieve something that is not easy to accomplish. Like running a marathon. And i want to gather physical and mental resources to defend myself in everyday life situation, if it is necessary. Thanks your your time & effort, and have a nice day.

Both 抱拳礼 baoquan li and 作揖 zuo yi variations of the palm fist salute have nothing to do with the hands symbolizing weapons, except perhaps to show pragmatically that you don’t have any weapons in your hands. There are tons of interpretations from Chinese scholars about the origins of this hand sign- most of which point to the idea of a willingness to serve (the fist being the servant and the palm covering it being the master). In modern China, it’s a symbol of equality, respect, an expressing of gratitude, or an apology. But, apparently, a lot of people have been taught this sword shield thing at their kungfu schools outside of China. And that’s fine. It sure does sound cool.

I live in China, I came across Zhang before she got into the UFC, I'm a fan and I desperately wanted her to beat Joanna. However I think she got a bit of a reality check in this fight, and she needs to reflect on her performance. Joanna outlanded her in total significant strikes: head 96-96; legs 58-58; body 32-11 to Joanna. Before the fight, Wei Li was a little dismissive of Joanna, saying she would have preferred to fight Rose or Valentina. She said that Joanna was past her best, and that we should not blink as she would knock out Joanna early. In the one takedown she was awarded, she wasn't able to make anything of it as Joanna got straight back up to her feet. It was a split decision and it could have gone the other way. She needs to improve before she can think of taking on Valentina. I hope she can improve and have a long reign, and I believe her team will learn from this fight and work on improving her game.

Even though winning the fight Zhang needs to rethink her strategy in the ring. Trading punches and kicks with Joanna all through 5 rounds was a bad idea. Joanna worked best in Muay Thai situation so Zhang should have avoided that at all cost and concentrated in taking Joanna down to choke or ground pound her into submission. Without a better strategy I afraid Zhang won't be able to keep her belt against opponent like Valentina Shevchenko who is far more dangerous than Joanna.

Here is my take, Weili should realize how lucky she was to escape that fight with the W, I do not think she wins without that disgusting hematoma on Joanna's forehead. I pray she and her coaches work on her grappling, as she was unable to use those knees that put Andrade down, on Joanna, and also realize going tit for tat with another striker is NOT a winning formula, but just a very good way to have a short career.

@@marcelolage1395 Romero is also an idiot of the highest degree so I wouldn't put too much stock in that, but to your point, The end goal of Weili's career is to defeat Shevchenko, and if she's going to do that, she's going to need to learn to dirty box, out grapple, a larger woman with a longer reach. Generally agree and I think she was fully aware. Joanna seems prone to that swelling, whereas for other fighters taking a shot on the dome is usually considered way better than anywhere else on the face. Joanna controlled the fight and kept surprisingly cool even as the damage accumulated. Absolute Hall of Fame performance, the low payout for them is utterly criminal. They both deserve *HUGE* bonuses because the night could have ended there and it would have been a legendary card. Personally I wish Joanna had gotten the win and retired. I scored it for her, I really don't think it gets better than a performance like that, and she's long in the tooth. Really don't want to see her start taking a bunch of losses.
