Lived here my entire life and had my best season in years in 2018. Cape Cod Canal striped bass fishing is the best. Locals use to avoid the canal because of the rocks and losing gear. I live on stripers for months now. Caught at least a dozen 40 pounders in 2018. Lost count after July. Just Crazy

AWESOME Vid. If you guys don't stay in front of your fish, you guys risk loosing fish to tangles and rocks because you let your fish go downstream from you. If you move with the fish, everybody else can keep fishing instead of waiting for the guy that let's his line go away from him instead of keeping the fish in front of him

Very nice fish. I picked up the Daiwa BG 6500 reel last week and used at the canal. I loved it, very fast and smooth. It's supposed to be similar to the Saltist. How do you like yours?
@elvinb74

newenglandartiste I caught 41 stripers from 15-27lbs .. TFO with 5000 Saltist great combo.
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
newenglandartiste the BG is one of, if not the best value for your money. The saltest, while a very solid mid range reel, is not worth double the BG. If you've got a BG I'd stick with that
@DanEvan

Dread Vin Yup great setup. I honestly don't see the need to go to a 6500. I've never once come close to even half the spool on a 6500. The extra drag is negligible considering most rods or line are going to break before you run out of drag

@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
Donald Touma I mean ideally you want a little breeze just so the fish don’t get a great look at the lure and are striking more of a profile with a certain action, but I’ve caught fish with them when it’s glassed out calm or blowing 30mph

Hey Dan I am planing a trip to the canal, and i would love to know how to select a date in 2018 to up the odds of catching some of theses chunks? Loves your vids and your sincerity in the sport
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
Jason Martin Jason, first off, thank you for the kind words. So some determining factors for your upcoming trip. 1) Striper Migration - around the beginning of May start following On the Water’s migration chart. 2) The beginning of the season is usually going to be small fish but you also have the chance to hook into a monster that shies away from regular patterns (for example the 64 pounder caught last spring). So if you did an early season trip just know that you’re going for lots of schoolies with the small chance of catching a freak 3) Where are you coming from? If it were me the longer my trip out here, the more certain I’d want to be about the conditions and how the bite was. I’d personally rather wait a little longer and catch multiple 20-40 pound fish than water skiing schoolies in with the hopes of a 50+ happening. Moon Phase: The breaking tides at the canal are probably one of the best topwater bites you’ll ever see, and there’s quite a bit of information about how they effect the canal. Check out My Fishing Cape Cod, a website and forum created by Ryan Collins who is an outstanding angler, super nice guy, and you can join for a month for free and have access to things like his audio classes (ie “Jigging the Canal” is my favorite or “Canal Tackle Recommendations”). Join about 2-3 weeks before your trip, take in all that information that Ryan disclosed, and then while you’re actually down here, use the Canal forum to keep a near real-time pulse on what’s going on at the ditch. 4) Gear: I don’t know your level of equipment or knowledge so let me know what you’re working with and I’ll make some recommendations based on your answers. Hope this helps make the best of your trip and def let me know about your gear so I can (if at all necessary) make some suggestions. I’ll be making a series of tackle talk over the next couple months so stay tuned! And most of all, thank you for your support Jason.
@jasonmartin2311

Hey Dan Thanks for the tips i will definitely use them, As far my trip it will be about 8 hours from central PA where i can only catch land locked hybrid stripers, it sucks. I was planing on going up there around the august new moon or later, some where in late august! As for gear i'm thinking tsunami airwave 10 or 11 foot extra heavy and reel bg 6500 spooled with 40 or 50 power pro. I do way to much fishing the way it is but i think this trip is one i would like to get under my belt.
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
Jason Martin Jason so if you’re only going to bring one rod with you, I’d say that the Tsunami TSAWESS-1142XH 4-8oz would be an excellent choice. I say that because if you stay for a few days and fish, the plugging topwater bite compared to the amount of jigging you’ll end up doing is very small. If you already have the BG6500 I think that’s an awesome reel, probably best value for the money, and should balance that rod nicely. You could even get away with a 5000 easily and cut down on weight, but I think the 5000 would pair better with the 3-6oz model. As far as line, you can’t beat original power pro for the price, and for the toughness. I run maxcuatro on my reels but for the price increase, the extra line capacity and casting distance isn’t wrorth it. Stock up on your 190/228 Magic Swimmers in both sinking and fast sinking (white/mack etc) and Stick Shadds (size 155, 182, 210) order some Guppy pencils, and most importantly, load up on jig heads 2oz-5oz with very strong hooks and rubber/paddle tails and/or buck tails (Al Gags, Bill Hurley, Joe Baggs, Savages are what I like). Also, Tsunami just release a 6” and a 9” mackerel patterned Shad FINALLY. That 9” Shad has a monstrous single hook and will be one of my go-to fo when the big fish are around. Cast that out right in front of you at your 12 o’clock and do a nice slow retrieve back up the ledge as it goes down tide!

Hi Dan. I was wondering if you had any advice for a beginner? I haven’t been fishing in about 15 years and it was mostly fresh water. I’ve always been intimidated by the canal and the last thing I want to do is be in the way of experienced anglers, and being that stupid amateur chick. Any gear you would recommend for starting out would greatly be appreciated. I was thinking maybe starting out on the Main Street side until I can be confident enough to be along side everyone else. Thanks for your time. Loving your videos, keep up the good work!
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
CapeCodGirl77 hey there. So first of all, it’s all about how you approach people. If anything a lot of these guys probably haven’t seen a woman in as long as they can remember and wouldn’t mind the company lol. If you approach them, try and see what they’re doing (jigging, throwing plugs etc) and ask if they mind if you setup downtide from them. Let them know you’ll hold your casts if they hook up etc. I was never turned down a spot to fish if I went that route. In terms of gear, get yourself something like a 10’ Tsunami Trophy II Medium Heavy rated 1-5 oz with a Daiwa BG 5000. The rod is like $100, the reel is like $130 and you’ll have a setup that you can throw anything but the heaviest jigs with. If you want something a little heavier you can try the 10’ Heavy version rated 4-6 but it’s much more limited on lighter lures.

@TriniTrav
@TriniTrav 6 лет назад
What you got on your casting finger?
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
TriniTrav it's an Aquaskins Kevlar finger guard. When you're casting heavy plugs with wet braided line, if you don't have some protection (hell I use electrical tape most of the time) you will slice your index finger pretty good....even more so as your skin gets wet. There's multiple options, from full gloves to just the finger guard you see here. When choosing a glove or guard you just really want to look for something that's got the Kevlar over the finger and quality stitching. Even the gloves and guards get chewed through eventually so when you see it start to wear, either replace it, or use a piece of electrical tape or medical tape (or both) as a back up measure

As much as I love fishing the canal the people are the reason I skip it during the hot streaks. Way too many amateurs, weekend warriors, bros, and discourteous people. I like to relax and enjoy myself out there without the chaos.
@Distantttt
@Distantttt 6 лет назад
hey dan do you think a 10’ is too small for the canal. if it is i was thinking of picking up a rod rated 2-6 oz, somewhere in the 10’6 range, thank man
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
Absolutely not, in fact 10’6” is going to be a very versatile length. Not so long that you’re constantly worrying about what’s behind you, but plenty long to reach out when you need to. I have an ODM Frontier X 2-6oz 11’6” and my buddy has the 10’6” and I like his better. I’ve tried just about every surf rod known to man, and worked at Redtop Sporting goods when I was younger so if you have any questions, or have a certain price point, I’d be happy to give you my input bud.
@Distantttt
@Distantttt 6 лет назад
Dan Evan thank you for a great response. i use a 9’6 ODM Frontier for the beach and was planning on making a trip. I know the canal is a completely different environment and i just don’t want to be tangling or crossing other anglers because of my rod. thanks, i’ll bring that and i’ll look into some 10’

@johnuga9225 6 лет назад
No i never fished there before and I'm just looking for good tips it looks like I'm going to make slack tide around 8 am and ill be there at around 4:30-5
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
John Uga don't worry about slack tide as much unless you're chunking bait. Get there just before sunrise, double check all your gear because even small fish will exploit weaknesses in it in that current. You'll want at least a 10ft rod rated for at least 2-5 or 6 oz, 40lb braid with around 3 feet of fluorocarbon leader etc. check out my fishing cape cod, Ryan Collins. He's put out so much information about the canal for free! Good luck man!

@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
That's just it though, those guys who set up right on top of us chose to do so because we had fish on. We were so close together there was no avoiding noticing that. I'm not condoning acting like a dick, but when you understand the context of it (had a friend drive 3-4 hours to make it there at 3 am just so we could get a good spot for sunrise, and we double up which presents its own challenges) so for them to blatantly cast over our lines with zero regard or respect for us, nor the other anglers around them, well it just wasn't right. I thought the gentleman to their left was going to go to blows with them because they were just so oblivious as to the disaster they were causing. For the most part, I've had nothing but great experiences and interactions with other Canal fisherman, and as long as that level of respect, and proper communication is maintained, there's no reason we can't all catch fish and have fun doing so!

JDsSportsRoom yeah because they just have kids sitting around on the rocks of the canal waiting for random acts of kindness....you also need to understand that the plug used is an 8.5” 3.5 oz pencil and skews the scaling. I kept that fish in simply to show an unedited back to back hookup. Don’t let the door hit you on your way out googan 😘
