Hey Dan, just had a question on how you like the Maxquatro braid. I’ve been trying to pick between that and cortland masterbraid. Just wanted to get your preference on it.
I think for an all around canal setup maxcuatro 50lb (40lb diameter) is awesome if you want to pay the money. It’s 0.32mm in diameter. That or Daiwa Samurai 55lb (0.36mm) are both awesome. The Daiwa is round and maintains its roundness so it doesn’t bite into the spool. Couldn’t go wrong either way.
@@DanEvan I wanted to diawa samurai stuff but it’s so god damn expensive now😂, might have to check out the maxcuatro PP stuff it does seem like some pretty nice braid.
@@JCB517 it’s nice for no other reason than the diameter to lb test ratio. It’s only a 4 carrier braid so it’s a bit louder but 50lb seems like it’s 30 in your hand and you will see the results casting and how easily your jig gets to the bottom
@@DanEvancool I’ll definitely will be going with the maxcuatro then, casting distance was what I was worried about but now that Ik 50 casts like 30lb I will definitely be getting it. Thanks for the help man.
@@DanEvan cool totally understandable, it is a time consuming hobby I want to get into myself someday but for now I’m more focused on catching big fish😂. If you ever plan on making more I would love to buy one off you and I would pay a lot cuz those are some heavy duty lures.
@@JCB517 yeah man I started building plugs about 12 years ago for no other reason than I was tired of inferior lures getting ripped to pieces by canal fish. Even through wired plugs having their cheap swivels torn out, or the tail wrap ripped through the side of the plug. Let me tell you it’s a futile fucking enterprise that very few people make money off of unless it’s your full time gig and without the right mentor it can drive you nuts haha. I’m terrified to even think about how much money I’ve spent testing so many different things from epoxy to paint to terminal tackle but the stuff I’m producing now I’d have no problem throwing at 400lb bluefin tuna. I’ve made lures for guys fishing for giant trevally in Australia and used 2.4mm 316 marine grade stainless wire, 5/0 1180lb Spro swivels, 400lb split rings, and a top coat of about 20 coats of automotive clear and 5-6 coats of epoxy and they’ve held up against the meanest fish on the planet no problem.
The only thing I dislike about this video is, I can’t get your plugs. Each view reminds me I don’t have any but I will keep looking for you till I find you to build some for me.
'This will be my last video of canal fishing for a while...Beyond the fact that I dont feel there is much value to these videos...' It's 2024 and 4:10 am. I created a playlist of your fishing videos and have been watching for almost 5 hours only to read this. This tells me you have no idea how nuch of a blessing and education resource you are to some of us. I blame us because we don't do a good job giving you feedback.
For the canal? Honestly just anything that’s not super high viz….moss green, white, powerpro light blue etc….I fish longer leaders than most so line color isn’t nearly as important as the line itself, and its characteristics.
@@DanEvan I saw your plugs and instantly fell in love with them. I’ve been dreaming about them since and till I have them in my bag, I will know no peace. I fervently and humbly ask you build some for me. I’ll pay.
@@omarsheriffkaptan yeah man so I haven’t done much building lately if you notice my account. And I also have never sold a plug in my life. They’re usually just gifts for friends. I’m working on something big though that I want to be the one they remember me for. When that comes to fruition I’ll let you know but the process of creating new stuff this complex is tedious and takes time
@@DanEvan That’s fair, my friend. Please let’s keep in touch. I will surely buy your plugs if you decide to make the leap into the market. Whatever the case, I MUST have a couple of your plugs in my bag. I will wait patiently and be praying you find the time and energy to unleash that big thing. Take all the time you need to make it a memorable one. You have my support 🙌🏾
It was the fact that the tide was at a transition point and the current had not yet picked up. Those same fish with 4-5 knots of current at their backs, and they’re hyper oxygenated are a completely different animal than slack tide and the heavy setup is not only to stop them from ultimately taking you to the bottom which is a graveyard of crap that will bust you off, but it’s also to make sure I’m not stopping guys downtide from casting for 20 minutes because I’m using an inappropriate setup for the canal. I also don’t want to over exhaust the fish, and because after fishing there for 20 years, and getting my fair share of ass kickings on lighter setups, I decided nobody cares about the fish you almost caught. When I’m in the open surf I use a 10’ ODM evolution rated 3/4-5 oz, moderate action rod, a VS150 with 30lb braid and 40lb leader. The video posted before this one on my channel shows what a 40lb striper with the current at is back can do and that’s an even heavier setup.
Great Job! We see the big fish. Now let's try to keep it alive, please. They say when big fish like that are caught at least 50% die after release. Thank you for taking us along
You should never lift a big bass up like that, too much stress on the organs. Get a quick measure and let her go. LengthxLenghtx length divide by 2200, that's the weight.
Way overpriced on all his lures. Sure he's old & not able to keep up W/demand due to exceptional quality/craftsmanship but unless the lure comes with a 60lb bass attached, it's price dont hold up in weight. Others have set the market and thus he followed suit.. Sure I understand but there's no justifiable reason from a consumer's perspective that I can see. Unless it's just art! Collect'em & put'em on the wall. No thanks. I'm here to catch fish not join the " work more 2 to pay 4 plugs club"
So I assume you’re referring to Mike’s lures…..the first ditch witch I ever bought was $25. When I made this video a ditch witch was priced at $32 and would be in stock for 2 months. The demand went up and the price has gradually gone up with it, and it still doesn’t stop the guy (who is 71) from making his best work to date, and it hasn’t stopped people from cleaning out the store in 2 minutes flat. Just don’t buy them lol. It’s rare I get one these days but I’m happy for Mike getting the credit he deserves. And people don’t realize Mike puts a ton of money back into fishing and conservation.
Has anyone here tried the Century Surf Machine rods? I picked one up a few weeks ago at the last Convention in Rhode Island. It’s the 10’ 3/4-4 oz model. Never used one and don’t even know what the rod is built to do. The only description of the action is Variable according to Century. Thing feels like a surgeons instrument though! Super light!
@@bobbylee3567 they were solid rods, honestly my favorite one was a 9’6 1/2-2 oz. The 12’ 2-8 didn’t like to throw anything under 4 oz, the 11’3 1-6 was a bit soft but the rods themselves are awesome
Yeah it was stock bottom end for this….never experienced a failure because the truck was probably only making a legitimate 550hp, 1100lb ft of torque…..but the difference between a stock trans/converter vs the limitless diesel built trans with tcm tuning in terms of getting the power to the ground with no loss felt like the truck had another 100hp to the wheels….I eventually did a mild build with carillo rods, mahle pistons, socal beehive valve train, 10mm pump, 60% overs, and a Danville 68 and some other odds and ends. I built this truck from the ground up though. The front end would be good for a full blown 2.6 pull truck, grizzly locker rear (massively regretted that)
The problem I’ve found is that I go so god damn past what’s necessary in terms of the build strength, paint used, wire, hardware, terminal tackle, clearcoat etc. that the price would be too high for me to be comfortable
Okay I was watching you other video and have posted this question there but decided to post here too. Don't want to post on every single video of yours I watch lol. So the question is , when do you throw topwater plugs for stripe bass ? And when should you not throw top water plugs ? I guess my question would be same for heavy swimbait jigs. When and when not to throw swimbait jigs ? Thanks !
Thanks man. And it all depends on the lure, but I make longcast pencils with a certain shape and weight that I tested in an open field with 3 of the guys who were testing the lures and with an 11’ jigster, 14k Stella, and 50lb super slick to a 40”60lb fluoro leader, the 4.5 oz pencil cast between 120-135 yards depending on the person. With a 12’ 2-8 black hole striped bass special, 14k Stella, 40lb maxcuatro to 48” of 80lb fluoro leader I was able to cast that same pencil 153 yards.
Thank you Dan, For taking the time to review a new line of rods coming out in the market. I appreciate the time you take to use this equipment before I rip my finger off. See you out there in the Spring.
This is definitely a “how to” guide on severing your fingertip haha. I still watch this though and am amazed at how much sack that bloody rod has. I had a 12’ custom sharking rod made paired with the old 8000 Saltiga expedition and I’ve yet to find the end of its power on sharks up to 250lbs
I think that would make for a great all around setup. I’d personally go for the 14k as it’s the same size as the 10k with a bigger spool and I think it would match better with the 11’ 1328. I had the 1328 before they introduced graphene into the rod blanks and the difference is night and day. The new one with graphene is such a better rod. The rod is kind of a Jack of all trades, master of none. It’s going to throw pencils 3-4 oz, 9” magic swimmers, stick shadds, and if you’re using paddle tail jigs it’s going to be fine with everything up to a 5 oz savage. The SS1329 is more of a dedicated jig stick. Same with the Paiva Century rod. But yeah for a single all around setup the 1328 with either a 14k or 10k saltiga, a high quality 50lb braid and 60lb fluoro leader will be an awesome setup.
The one thing I wouldn’t get if I could have done it all over again would be the grizzly locker. It’s just not necessary for a daily driver street truck and the stock G80 diff is fine unless you have a dedicated work stock puller or drag race. I had to lock down my longhorn fab HD traction bars to eliminate the wheel hop that comes with the locker.
@@DanEvan i fully rebuilt my rear end with New Nitro Gear ring and pinion and I installed there Helical Worm gear locker. Its like the detroit tru track i love it. Performs amazing and i also have the longhorn fab traction bars lol and i wont get rid of it. Go to much time and money into it man lol. I used to have a Brand new 2016 duramax denali i bought off the lot with 5 miles on it. Did all these exact same mods to that. But registration for it in California when i lived there was $1000 a year and i kept having a couple factory electrical issues. So i solf that truck and bought my lbz with 70k original miles and have been buildin it sense
Haha….5k thanks to socal diesel valve train and heads and Danville max effort “fuck it” tune 5 and TCM tuning…..think I spun a stock rod bearing about 2 days after this video 😂
@@DanEvan thats bad ass id love some soCal diesel heads with those beehive valve springs. I also have Danville built trans tunes. My tune 5 gets down but not as much as yours lol i wish i had more money right now to Build my engine lol. Ive revved 4610rpms as per my cts2 monitor records lol but that was just neutral revving it for some people at Rod Run in pigeon forge tn
Insanity wow all trophy stripers on topwater that's unbelievable. I went to the canal last week and I only catched couple little guys even using big jigs and 8" guppy pencil popper. When is usally the best month for fishing the canal
I hate "fishermen" who watch an angler land a fish then demand you give it to them instead of releasing it like hey buddy if you've got a rod and reel you are more than able to feed yourself don't try and feed off me like some parasite piss off - awesome video love your content big love from Australia.
Dan…No knew videos coming out on the ditch.?I was there last week and fished a few mornings and picked up one blue and a schoolie and that’s it.Using the the ODM 3 to 8 oz rod you recommended.Only saw surface action that one morning.
Besides early June the ditch has absolutely sucked. All the Macks stayed out in deep water off Stellwagon, and all the pogies pushed through and the stripers have just been staying with them, oceanic sand eels, and butterfish offshore. Surfcasting from the ditch has been about as bad as I can remember and I’ve fished it and lived 2 minutes away for 15 plus years now.
Those were cows How will you recommend jig the canal ? I watch people doing slow with aggressive pulls, and other people doing fast without being aggressive on the pulls ?
So I’d say it all depends on the type of jig you’re using. Paddle tail, rat tail (straight tail), bucktail (feather dressed or sparse), diamond jig (metals)? I fish them all differently due to their sink rates and characteristics in the current so if you can give me what you’re throwing, I’d be happy to give you my input. Cheers man, and thank you.
@@DanEvan hello man, I usally use algags jigs and savage gear saneeld jigs. I don't fish the canal very often but I would like to get an idea on how to jigs with them
@@l_ogi_l2039 So I would fish those jigs two ways if I were you. One would be like drifting a trout fly and just swinging it just off the bottom in the current. Just know that once it gets past you in the tide that paddle tail is going to make the bait rise so slow your retrieve down. Also don’t always try to make the longest cast. Try a fan pattern of long, medium and short casts. As far as yanking it off the bottom I just don’t think it’s necessary with a paddletail. You can lift the rod or snap it off the bottom quickly but anything more exaggerated than that is just yanking the jig out of the strike zone imo
I’ll always be fishing the ditch brother. And I probably have enough content filmed to make 10 great videos, but once my channel started getting over 100k, I couldn’t help but think I was part of the problem on those days where the place was shoulder. But the canal will always be so special to me. Caught my first keeper there 28 years ago, caught my first fish over 30lbs on a plug I made, got my first landbased 50 there etc.
