Replacing a battery system is equivalent to replacing the engine in a combustion engine. Not a normal expense
@metroid74
@metroid74 8 месяцев назад
Right because you should not expect to replace a petrol engine in a car in until it is over 300k miles these days. Youd replace the batteries in an electric 1.5 to 3 times in the same distance traveled. And batteries are getting more expensive not less as time goes on.

Imagine we lived in a world where all cars were EVs, and then along comes a new invention, the "Internal Combustion Engine"! Think how well they would sell: A vehicle half the weight, half the price that will almost quarter the damage done to the road. A vehicle that can be refuelled in 1/10th of the time and has a range of up to 4 times the distance in all weather conditions. It does not rely on the environmentally damaging use of non-renewable rare earth elements to power it, and use far less steel and other materials. Just think how excited people would be for such technology, it would sell like hot cakes!

If the cost of owning is the most concern when purchasing a vehicle, then buying the cheapest car is the most important factor in the cost calculations. Model 3 is $28000+tax more expensive than 2024 corolla L cvt (cheapest trim). In order to give model 3 or any EVs the advantage of cost-saving aspects, the msrp prices should come way down. If you simply like EVs , the features of EVs, and have a garage to charge every night, and don't really care about the costs, sure go for it but if frugality is the one and only equation you use for buying a car, just buy a used honda civic or corolla or prius.

If you can live with a slightly lower range get a lfp battery last longer than the car itself and can be charged to 100% before a drive without any issue
@suvann540i

also, no cobalt or nickel. no thermal runaway. I support this recommendation. also, 99% of the time you own a car you are not likely traveling over 150 miles a day. so a car with say 220-280 mile range with lfp would be pretty optimal.

Oh and let's not forget, if you want to be comfortable, it's going to cost you a ton of your range... Personally, when it's brutally hot or bitterly cold... I want to be comfortable... Using my air conditioning in my vehicle usually drops my potential range by 5 to 10 mi... Using the heater, no measurable amount... In your Tesla or any other electric car, not only is the heat capacity of your air conditioning greatly reduced from that of a mechanically driven system, but it reduces your range by over 20%... In the winter time, it has to use a resistive heater to heat the interior... That's 2,000 to 8000 Watts... 1500 watts is about 5,100 BTU, equivalent to a small space heater.. cars don't have near the amount of insulation that a home would... You lose up to 50% of your range using your heat in certain cases..

What about the vast EV depreciation and now higher insurance costs? Charging costs are hugely variable depending on whether you use solar at home, electricity grid at home or public charging.
@dolamyte
@dolamyte 19 дней назад
Depreciation kills any EV “benefits”. My 10 year old Lexus LX with over 100k miles barely gets 20mpg on the highway with a tailwind, has only needed oil, tires and brakes, will last my lifetime and has only lost about 10% of its value in the last several years. My father bought a new ‘22 MYP in December of that year for over $70k, only has 6k miles and has lost 50% of its value. $35k is a lot of gas to make up for, and the quality and comfort are night and day

Interesting thought. Since battery operated cars don't have the range of many gasoline cars that means 1 and/or 2 things. Battery operated cars cannot store as much potential energy as gasoline cars. If battery operated cars can store as much potential energy as gasoline cars, since battery operated cars have less range gasoline cars then battery operated cars are less efficient that gasoline cars.

I don’t have $50k on splurge on a car. Electric cars are still a gimmick,I’d buy one if they cost $6k as my 2015 Kia Optima, less than $500 to maintain and fuel up and i drive it cross country, no stop to charge up 😂 245k miles and still drives awesome, transmission has been changed once.

Look, you can drive whatever you want, but the truth is you do have $50k to "splurge" on a car. By your own admission, 245000 miles driven means around 10000 gallons of gas, which is right about $45k (maybe less, depending on your local price), plus I'm adding 50 oil changes at $50, that's about $2500, and also some transmission work done, around $4000. Now, I realize that driving an EV means you need to still spend some money on electricity, but the cost will be significantly less than what you pay for gas + oil changes. As a comparison, at the current rate of electricity that I'm paying, 245k miles would cost me around $4k. Plus no oil changes or transmission replacement. Now, the battery change is not a normal or frequent occurence, as is the case for the engine rebuilt on a petrol car, it must be a factor on the style of driving, but if you think about it, changing the battery vs replacing the engine is still a better deal on an EV, because a new battery adds 8 yr warranty to your car, as opposed to maybe 3 yrs on an ICE.

Here's the thing about EVs. It would be very difficult to find someone that has just one EV. Whether multiple EVs to a household, or the more common an EV and one or more ICE vehicles. That goes to our current state of confidence in an EV versus an ICE vehicle which we would have considerably more confidence i, as the only vehicle.
@suvann540i
@suvann540i 8 месяцев назад
this will change over time though. my wife has a hybrid. i got an EV. by the time she replaces her car, we're confident we'll be able to get another EV, and become a two EV household. day to day, after we're done with work, we haul our kid around in my Polestar instead of her volvo because we want to avoid wear and tear on her car. not to mention the cost of gas. Hell, some mornings she just takes my car in the morning cause she doesn't have time to fill up her volvo at the gas station. It's just way more convenient and less of a headache in regards to maintenance having to go get gas somewhere. next year supercharges will be available to damn near everyone. essentially eliminating the range anxiety. so yeah, our confidence in EVs is quite high.

So the difference isn't that huge because you faced a battery replacement... Effectively around $5-6k difference. How much is the difference in price between the vehicles? Moreover, I feel like a Lexus RX350 isn't necessarily a proxy for the entirety of ICE cars. Sure, if you're in the market for a Model Y, a Lexus is in your price range, but the fact that things like a Nissan Versa even exists at all in the spectrum of ICE vehicle choices is far more meaningful for the mass market.

How the hell did the lexus cost 27k? Wtf. We need a breakdown of that. 100k miles in how many years? I swear all these ppl cant calculate correctly. If only maintence n gas. I spend 480$ a year on gas and over 100$ oil change per 5k miles which is $2000 for 100k miles. Add on tires $1000, add on brakes n rotors $1500. Add on new batt 300$. Lets say u change tires n brakes n rotors n batt twice in 100k. Over 10 years of gas thats still only a total of 12400$ over 10 years n 100k miles. Lmao where r u getting 27k?
