Unfortunate that editable controls are being dropped for good. They seem like such an obvious addition towards the philosophy of controller/boxx parity and make a huge contribution towards making the game more accessible to new players and players coming from other plat-fighters.
@@Melbellee I definitely see the rationale behind not doing perfect wavedashes and tilt stick (even if I think they're good changes), but I personally think tap-jump shoulda made the cut. At least for me, it's the one change that would actually make me consider playing the game more as it's by far the #1 reason I don't play. It has fairly limited competitive advantage (pretty much just easier up-tilts) while having probably the largest accessibility benefit of any possible change.
It's disappointing that you're discontinuing legacy edition. One of the best parts of 1.03 was the ability to disable tap jump individually. Please reconsider.

I would love to see a version that has a mode selector on boot to switch between three modes, one with only UCF style changes, one that the fixes and the box-parity changes, and one with all the casual features like controls and stages. Maybe something like the old multi-mod launcher. There are so many cool features and QoL tweaks in this hack but theyre locked behind one guy's controversial balance tweaks
Not leaving the watermark in when people are stealth adding this to tournament settups is arguably irresponsible Note, these are tournament settups at ucf tournaments Im talking about. If theres actually a 1.03 major sure, that shouldnt use a watermark. But they dont exist.
You'd have to argue stealth UCF is just as unethical, but it seems just to be standard practice to not appear as if the game is modded for streaming purposes.
I assume the idea is that it's a beta release and because there are issues, you should know what you're running on. I imagine if you want to run stealth you will continue to use the old version until this gets a stable release
@@Nawakooo0 Sure but can you name a single major that uses 1.03? Not even the nightclub uses it. Currently almost every major, including recently @ smashcon, some dumbass kid loads up a bunch of gamecubes with 1.03 which isnt chill. Thats the issue, not locals getting smited because they ran the hax mod.
I understand the watermark is temporary but is there a true 'stealth' option? Like if someone just goes back a screen from the character select its clearly modded and that's a turn off for TOs
this is a beta version, some of the fixes aren't functional and it shouldn't be used for tournament matches @poopheadtwenty-seven540 using and especially streaming modded nintendo games has caused issues in the past, Nintendo has straight up c&d tournaments because they were using "hacked" versions of Melee and Brawl (back in the day you couldn't even run ads while streaming Project M on twitch, don't know how it is today)
a stealth option is a terrible idea because 1.03 makes balance changes, dipshits already switch tournament setups to 1.03 and not being able to tell would be a huge issue
I just wish it would be feasible to patch in a fix for getting side-b while standing, when that exact same angle would count as a shine in the air. Silly Melee jank.

I don't know the technical details offhand but I'll try to give you a solid lead if you want to look further. You basically need either a modded Wii or a GC Memory Card to USB adapter. Then you can update the Memory Card data via tools like Dolphin (USB adapter) or GameCube Memory Manager (Wii Homebrew app).

i love all the changes, but does this mean there is no updated version with configurable controls? ive seen many people complain about melees tap jump and how it drives people away from the game.
Yah I don’t think there is any way I wish so badly u could turn off tap jump it makes up tilting really hard there’s a few things like no input buffering really drives me off too, cuz u will hit attacks n sometimes it just feels so bad when playing off console where there is input delay as well it just makes it a mess to play I wish there could be some fixes for these but u just kinda gotta get used to it or go play ult hopefully modders can help this a lil bit
@@twotamatos I swapped to box for 3 reasons: tap jump, ADT shield and dash back out of crouch. I've hated accidental tap jump for over a decade and I couldn't wait to get rid of that shit. When it was obvious that the community was not going to do anything about making it optional for regular controllers, I gave up and moved to box. I've never been happier with a controller in my life.

@@twotamatos if you are able to afford one, it's 100% worth it. Getting a box single handedly brought back my love for the game. I used to get super frustrated at all of the 3 issues above and get tilted almost every session I'd play. Since moving to box and getting past the learning stages of it, I absolutely love it and I've never had more fun with melee in the 14 years I've played. Personally I'd probably recommend a lunchbox or a prism, but the latter is very expensive (like $450). Any box you can get your hands on is good though and I literally built mine with a 3d printed case.
I dont understand why they would ever want to remove custom controls from this, the only problem with them is that they affect balance and the other changes affect balance anyway. If youre fine with that, just go all the way
I switch between slippi and gc and don’t want the gc timing to get erased by 1.03’s changes, would I develop different muscle memory in 1.03 that affects my regular 1.02 timing? Genuine concern I’ll be unlearning real shield drops, etc

Hax you have to undo the smash DI fix and the perfect wavedashes in 1.03, a lot of peaple don't support 1.03 because of these fixes. All the other stuff is perfect, immagine playing on unranked, inputing an up throw up air and your character really do that consistently... even tho it will never happen unfurtunatly
Honestly, it would be great for this to be the new standard. Goomwaves and other cheater controllers are way to expensive for anyone but a top player to even consider.
@Aziz Al Yami, I’m super serious, if you truly care about the future of Smash, please listen. If you (and the smash community) really want Melee to be at its best FOR THE FUTURE, it is ABSOLUTELY 100% NECESSARY to include BASIC CUSTOM CONTROL functionality like a Tap Jump toggle, option to put tilts on c-stick, and allow full hopping/short hopping to be differentiated by separate input methods of analog vs digital presses (I use y and R for example) as well as adding the option to include ZR/ZL so additional techniques unique to lower tier characters (like Yoshi, who could possibly become the best in the game) can utilize B-reversal wave bouncing on ZL, mapping grab to X for smoother inputs, and be able to instantly expand the player-base up to the size of the entire Smash scene, especially since the lower tier characters characters tend to have stronger combo/punish games once their dash up-tilt is more usable/viable and their unique b-moves are more easily able to be integrated into a play style by the very nature of b-reversal wave bouncing integrating itself as another movement and attack option (like Yoshi becoming able to grab opponents from the air while retreating instead of the infamous awful tongue grab that leaves you open for days while Marth grabs you with the Force). Otherwise, your playing a watered down, unbalanced version of a famously rushed game that has set historic precedent with every other game including Smash Remix to customize controls so players can play every character at their best on the best controller which would include the one thing the iconic GameCube controller lacks: ZL (and a slightly bigger d-pad)
But yeah, if Melee players are truly scared of losing to Ultimate players, keep it the way it is and continue to disrespect yourselves and ourselves as a community by trying to limit others rather than empowering everyone to be better. It was the custom controls of the legacy patch that truly gave me hope for the future of Melee after Ultimate
There is no wave bouncing or b reversing in this game, wtf are you talking about. We’ve managed over 2 decades without custom controls… We’ll be here long after Ultimate dies.
Late reply. I partially agree with you. 1.03 was an incredible change to the base game, whatever downsides it might have had were outshined and outnumbered by the upsides, however, human nature resists change even if it's illogical to do so. Custom controls and tap jump toggle were features that are so important for gameplay that every modern platfighter i have played has these options and yet, people refused. Just like how long it took to ban infinite combos due to lame rationalizations and how people rejected automativ L-CANCELLING, people will refuse change. This is also present in other fighting games, simple command inputs are to this day rejected even if it makes games accesible to any kind of controller. Melee will likely stay as it is, for better or worse, it's probably a smarter decision to support other promising platfighters instead of waiting for obsesive fans to change their ways. I don't care about Aziz's drama with the smash community but it's really sad to see a guy put so much effort in a passion project that will benefit most of the community only to be shut down by ignorance and bias, kind of when oil companies remove green technologies from the market.
