Services between Hunts Cross and Southport operate as part of the Northern line on the Merseyrail network. At the time this journey was filmed services across the Merseyrail network were operating at a reduced 20 minute frequency however the normal service pattern is a 15 minute frequency on most Merseyrail routes which means on this route there are 12 trains an hour on the core section from Liverpool Central to Sandhills with the Kirkby and Ormskirk services also on the Northern line. The Southport to Hunts Cross route is the longest single journey that can be made on a Merseyrail train (not including loop services on the Wirral line).
The rolling stock used on this route has been class 507 and 508 EMU 3 carriage trains which often operate as 6 carriage services. These units will soon be replaced by 4 carriage Stadler 777 Metro trains which will take over operations of all Merseyrail services on the Northern and Wirral lines. As the Merseyrail network is mostly self contained the only other rolling stock used on any section of this route is those of services on the CLC line between Manchester and Liverpool via Warrington Central as this route shares a short section of track west of Hunts Cross and at Southport station where Northern operates services to Manchester although Merseyrail have their own platforms.
This route is double track throughout with 1 track and platform for Merseyrail at Hunts Cross. This route is electrified throughout using 3rd rail DC electrification, the only National Rail use of this equipment outside of London and the South. The section through central Liverpool is in tunnels with Liverpool Central and Moorfields being completely underground.
Connections with other Merseyrail Northern line services can be made at Liverpool Central, Moorfields and Sandhills to destinations including Ormskirk and Kirkby. Wirral line connections to Liverpool Lime Street must be made at Moorfields and from Lime Street at Central due to the 1 way Wirral line loop but all other Wirral line stations can be reached by changing at either Moorfields or Central which include services to New Brighton, West Kirby, Ellesmere Port and Chester. Other National rail connections are possible on this route at Southport an Hunts Cross for Northern services and at Liverpool South Parkway for Northern, East Midlands Railway, Transport for Wales and London Northwestern Railway. Although Liverpool Central is the busier of the 2 main Liverpool stations no other National rail operators serve the station with a separate journey to Lime Street required for Northern, East Midlands Railway, Transport for Wales, London Northwestern Railway, TransPennine Express and Avanti West Coast services.
Journey sections:
Hunts Cross to Liverpool South Parkway: 0:00:00
Liverpool South Parkway to Liverpool Central: 0:04:28

Moorfields to Sandhills: 0:21:37
Sandhills to Hall Road: 0:25:39
Hall Road to Ainsdale: 0:41:21

The Merseyrail Class 507 and Class 508 are expected to be replaced by the Class 777 sometime later this year. That Merseyrail should do a farewell tour of the Class 507 and Class 508.

I wish more cities in the UK had systems like Merseyrail and it should be fairly easy to do as it could mostly use existing infrastructure, cities like Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Glasgow which have poor frequency's on some routes could be upgraded to operate like Mersyrail at least every 15 minutes on all routes at all stations.

Nice journey. I would like to see Southport get a faster service to Liverpool skipping the smaller stations although this would not really fit with the Merseyrail operations where every train stops at every station on the network (except Capenhurst).
