I was working for Toyota in vehicle testing when we were testing the prototype versions of this vehicle back in 2018 and 2019. We tested them all over Australia in every terrain possible, often with a non mild hybrid hilux as a baseline. There was some teething problems to be expected, but the mild hybrid excelled. I was starting to think we weren’t going to see it in Australia

I've had my 48V Rogue for a few months now and you barely notice the hybrid setup at all. Most new Toyotas come with start/stop tech so if you're used to it already, you won't notice a thing. The only thing missing is brake hold. The Kluger has it and it's great at the lights. Otherwise the Rogue is a great trade between work and play.

I am a fan of the tech as long as it is done right. The idea comes from railway locomotives and those go for millions of miles and have been a fan of those for a while as well. The tech was bulky and heavy up until now and with the advances in super conductors I think it is a matter of time that we see something epic. I typically wait for Mercedes since they usually figure out how to engineer the pieces for longevity.

For the cost of these newer vehicles it's really starting to make more sense to leave them at home for daily driver use and have a specific vehicle built for off road use. That way you can have a basic, trail repair friendly off-roader, and keep the high tech high cost parts ride safe and dry. If you live remote and depend on your vehicle daily no matter what comes your way then these new hybrids are probably not for you...at least not without a lot of rework and relocation of expensive parts like that 48v dc converter.

Are all new hiluxs going to be hybrid or can you still get diesel ones
@148Reaper

Ok, but how about the things that actually matter, what fuel consumption does it actually get. Does it get the 10% better that Toyota mentions, and what is that actually? Is it on par with other brands that overall get better with their non hybrids, or is it still behind, or does it actually beat it now. Liters/100km. Its the number 1 reason someone would consider changing to a hybrid/electric.

What is the cost to implement this technology, financial and environmental? What are the actual benefits/savings? Seems like an expensive bandaid to get that green tick!

Well that’s off roading into the outback done. Great way to tame Australia and keep you in your suburbs, create 4x4s you don’t trust 100Ks from a highly trained electrics mechanic.

When I hear “reduces emissions” I hear, “introducing shīt”… “Look mate, my Hilux is like an army Swiss knife now, I have 365 different options and gadgets for any scenario.” “Yeh mate, but now you have 365 ways it can break down on you.”

Yeah, I agree, we shouldn't innovate or try new things at all in this industry. In fact, I preferred when it was just the Ford Mode T days. I could have any colour as long as it was black.

Even though the battery is likely waterproof rated they could have installed it behind the seat higher up on the rear bulkhead rather than under the seat. Not only would it have given further peace of mind in a flooded cab situation, but also aided in natural cooling. Is it Lithium-ion or LiFePo4?

if you want you can move the 48v battery its not that hard plus the cables are much smaller too. they have tested those things.
