Do hydroblox noodles pass water? The owner of Hydroblox states that there are pores in the plastic noodles that pass water. See the referenced video here:
(The applicable section is only about 60 seconds long at 2:51)
• Handy Andy Hydroblox...
I really wanted to use Hydroblox if it worked, but I was skeptical. I bought a board and began testing it. At first glance, the Hydroblox board does let water pass from one side to another... but it did so a little too fast. On closer inspection, I could see Hydroblox let light through, meaning there were simply holes going from one side to another. This wasn't necessarily bad, but I made the assumption that holes will simply fill with dirt over time.
After putting some water on the edge of the Hydroblox, where it was flat, I noticed the water didn't move. This was contrary to what I was led to believe by the previous link. If the noodles themselves didn't let water through, this is just porous plastic.
The test seems to show that no water passes through the noodles, which seem to be solid plastic.

I’ve watched the videos on Hydroblox for many years now. A lot of the demonstrations that were once on RU-vid are no longer easily found which causes some skepticism. But one of the things that they touted was that Hydroblox works off of water head pressure. Simply put, there may not be enough water in that cup to make enough pressure to force the water through the right weaves of the noodles. So if you still have the noodle around, maybe try that. And if you have a 5 gallon bucket you’re not afraid to break, maybe poke the noodle through the bottom of that to see if it works. Appreciate your work on this video either way

I noticed the same. And they updated/changed websites about a year ago.

Nick, you're the ONLY RU-vidr that has done a demonstration. Thanks.

I invested a great deal of money in this system , followed directions and it flat out did not work. It may work for a small amount of water but I really could not tell a difference. I called up the company but they didn't want to warranty any of it. I put in an old school pipe , grave and cloth system and that worked. I could have saved myself $6000.

So glad I found your video. Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together and post. I couldn't find any other practical reviews on this product except yours. I wish to put in 3 lines of 500 feet each to drain a large parcel, and owing to how much simpler these look to install versus a formal french drain - I was seriously considering these Hydroblox. Back to considering other options for me. If anyone has any info on the NDS EZFlow system, that is another alternative I'm considering.

I wouldn't bother with this product. What happens when this gets clogged with dirt? There is a product that ACF Environmental, who I believe is now owned by Ferguson, has called Wick Drain. They have 6", 12", 18", 24" strips of this that are wrapped in a Non-Woven fabric which allows filtration. I suggest you check em out if you are looking for an alternative and easier french drain. Pretty cheap as well. I think I paid $125 for a 6"x150' piece and it took no time at all to install because its super light.

I'll check that out. At this point, I'm digging up the hydroblox and sending them in to be re-recycled.

It takes noodles together not one plastic noodle.

Really great that you made this video. I was thinking the same thing. I'm not saying they are no good but yes, it seems the water has to go AROUND the noodles so why can't mud build up? They are touted as lasting sorta maybe "forever" -- see George Carlin best three minutes video. Why we exist? PLASTIC! heh. But seriously if packed in clay these might work great. Dunno. Thank you. .. would have liked to see you pour water on one end and have it come out the other end . . . instead of just sides...

Thanks for the reply! I've gotten a lot of negative feedback for this video, so it's nice to hear something positive. I've seen people stack these end to end, so I'm pretty sure that is a bad idea based on this. I also don't know how you'd change angles, since not joining them side by side is likely to not let water pass easily. I also don't know what would prevent it from clogging... But I'll leave that to be tested before I make any judgements.

It's real disappointing when people post crap like this and don't know what they're talking about.

So, this was actually confirmed by hydroblox in the comments here. Water doesn't pass through the noodles. I did this because I heard a statement to the opposite, found in the description. I thought it was impossible for water to pass through... So I tested the idea, and it was confirmed by the test and later the company itself. Not sure why you have a problem with this. I even contacted the company to try and give them an opportunity to respond (which they did).

It's really disappointing when people don't appreciate the importance of asking questions before swallowing advertising whole. Hey maybe with those noodles from Christmas mail we can make some of our own! Dig a trench and toss in some packing noodles! Save a heck of a lotta money.

Just a way for someone to make money from recycled plastic.....I figure a good french drain will be cheaper and work better.......

French drain may not be cheaper but it will sure as hell work better. Cost of gravel is outrageous so depending on the size of the drain, it may be 2-3 times more expensive. I would spend the extra money to get a drainage system that works and wont clog with dirt in a few years time.

His demonstration is flawed big time. You can't take one noodle and expect it to work like the board would with open holes running thru. Use you heads people. It is like taking the plug off the end of a cord, plugging it in and expecting the lamp to come on. If you don't know how to set up an unbiased research test, don't.
@nickr7437
@nickr7437 Год назад
The interview in the description has a hydroblox spokesperson say that although the noodles look solid, there are little holes in them that allow them to suck up water like a eyedropper. The whole interview is in the description. The test was to see whether this was true or not. As far as.i could tell, the individual noodles are not capable of passing any appreciable or visible amount of water. A Hydroblox spokesperson came on here and said the person misspoke, and the voids between the noodles are what the water passes through, not the noodles themselves. So, if you read the description, you'll see what the test was about... and see why I tested it the way I did.

What happens when these "Boards" get clogged with dirt? They are meant to go underground where there is plenty of mud and dirt. I get it, water takes the path of least resistance but not if the board is caked with dirt.
