I tried to propagate Pothos using a trick found in Deep Water Culture hydroponics. I wanted to see if it aided in propagation and helped get more consistent results.

Hmmm, intereating. This certainly has me thinking. Even inconclusive results can still be results that tell us a lot...

yeah what i desperately want to figure out is how to get root rot so i can find ways to prevent it. people ask me how to stop it but ive never experienced it so its gotta be the water some people have available

@@TechplantChannel I think most people are experiencing rot on propagation from cuttings they got online. They're slightly older and have gone through the mail, while yours are fresh.

I do basically the same thing and I get much better results than with just water. The difference is I only add air for an hour a day. Once I did this, existing roots quickly began developing what you call rootlets or sub-roots. This is a good experiment!

Same! Would love to see something on this. I hear in other videos people saying to just use the method that works for you, which doesn't say which is the better method -- that suggestion only really means that some people tend to over/underwater making the soil/moss methods generate rot. It would be nice to know which actually works best for faster propagation of the plant.

Love these videos where you do experiments - have you done one on cloning paste? I've seen a few videos on it, but it would be cool to see which different types would be most effective i.e. keiki vs. cheaper generic amazon brand. Also would be interesting to see which genus of plants it works best on. EDIT: Also to add, if you do an experiment with rooting hormone try a control where you use the hormone but don't change the water. I've found this to be the most effective way to use rooting hormone but I also worry about the skanky water.
@TechplantChannel

thats been my experience with rooting hormone. it creates a film on the surface of the water choking out the plants. I will do some experiments tho!

@lovableasshole
@lovableasshole 3 года назад
The plants already have everything they need to start new growth already. Otherwise we couldn't propagate them from cuttings at all. How well they grow is going to be determined by the health of the vine more than anything. It's like spring bulbs; the leaves and flowers produced by a tulip are created from energy stored from last year's growth. How you treat them now doesn't effect their current blooms. A stone isn't going to matter unless you're doing long term hydroponics, since short term propagation is just about preventing the roots from rotting.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 3 года назад
ive got some theories on why people experience root rot and one of them is a lack of oxygen in the water. I was hoping an increased amount would show a difference in root growth but sadly it didnt
@diavalus
@diavalus 3 года назад
@@TechplantChannel I think in your experiment there was enough oxygen in water for your plants. But if bacteria develops and exceeds a threshold, I expect it will start feeding on the roots, thus damaging them. I was doing a similar "experiment" this summer, I had two pots, one where the plants roots were submerged in water and second where they were planted only in compost from the nursery store. The plants in compost died of root rot after 1 month even though I was watering only when the soil was almost completely dry and the plants were wilting. The other ones which are only in water are still growing today (it's been already 6 months since I started). So, I tend to believe oxygen plays an important role but also bacteria population does. In a sterile environment, I don't think it's possible to get root rot. The compost we buy from stores is not yet 100% broken down and is still using oxygen to do so, which means the roots have less available oxygen and the (unwanted) bacteria population is much higher. Found out your channel recently and really enjoying your experiments! Wish you a great day!

Really cool experiments for pothos! I have about 12 jars right now that I’m trying to root. I’m on day 4! My window sill faces East and gets great lighting. And the rest are sitting on another window sill but facing West. Looking good so far. Do you think tap or distilled water is better than the other? And do you think changing out the water every few days helps any? I’ll be browsing your other videos! So glad I found you.

What if it's flowing water? if the water doesn't sit and it's constantly being refreshed like in a stream would it make a difference? it would be expensive to have a constantly refreshed water source, but maybe if the water was flowing and replaced daily to keep bacteria growth at a minimum?
