Hyundai Kona Electric EV has the same drivetrain like the KIA e-Soul and e-Niro. This video is a follow-up to my KIA e-Niro road trip. How far can the Hyundai Kona Electric drive keeping up with the traffic?

Marek, you are one of the few folks who can make both an EV test as well as an ICE test interesting. It shows you are intellectually flexible, and anything but a fanboy. I am looking forward to many more useful reviews.

I really liked your video, great work. I‘m from Germany and been driving through Poland twice. Many drivers are absolutely out of their minds (maybe just my opinion, but on a motorcycle I didn’t feel save driving there.) Also this is the first Kona in a YT Video which doesn‘t have full leather seats. Thanks for showing the seats in detail (this is the first time I‘ve seen the Kona without leatherseats). I‘m getting my Kona electric this week and I’m also going with non-leather seats.

Nice video. 👍. So around 18-19kw at 130-140kph and 14-15kw after ~300km of normal drive. That is more like a real test. Thanks for the efort✌. Ps. Maybe next time you will have time and buget to do a 'full tank' only on the highway. 😁

Very interesting video - definitely some food for thought with longer journeys. If the journey is greater than available range, and shortest total time is the goal, then there are interesting calculations to do regarding lower cruising speed plus less recharge time vs higher average speed but longer recharge stop(s)
@extracoolboy
@extracoolboy 4 года назад
Not really that complicated. Most EVs charge fastest between 20-80%. So you drive say 200 kilometers, take 40-45mins brake, perhaps for a lunch and coffe, and then you can drive another 200kms. And most drivers don't do more than couple houndreds kms every day. I only drive like 50km to work and back every day, and somtimes longer trips couple houdred kms, but still totally fine with one or two charging stops.

I'm learning a lot about how these EV vehicles perform. Thanks for the solid review Marek. I think the winter will kill the range of most EVs.

@0hypnotoad0
@0hypnotoad0 4 года назад
I think the Kona EV will lose about 100km of range. Bear in mind that the same thing happens to a petrol or diesel vehicle, most people just tend not to notice it happening. To be honest in both cases, most people just don't do long road trips in the dead of winter.
@Doggepe
@Doggepe 4 года назад
@@0hypnotoad0 A petrol or diesel car does not use 25% more fuel in the winter lol, maybe 5%
@0hypnotoad0
@0hypnotoad0 4 года назад
@@Doggepe The EPA appears to disagree with you, but I mean they are just scientists and engineers, so what do they know. The downlow is that proportional loss in fuel economy based on temperature is pretty similar between electric and combustion. However one difference is the fuelling speed for combustion vehicles obviously doesn't change in the winter, whereas a cold EV battery won't accept as much DC fast charge power in very cold conditions. The reality for a gas vehicle is that you'll just be spending more money on fuel during the winter months, you're unlikely to notice anything unless you're counting beans.
@Doggepe
@Doggepe 4 года назад
@@0hypnotoad0 You don't need to provide a bible as explanation, go drive your car and you can easily compare fuel milage. Yes it's more due to colder, denser air which in turn makes the car produce more power, which requires more fuel to get the chemically correct ratio of combustion which is approx 1:15. But as i said, like 5% in real life from my experience owning several different cars, both diesel and gas everywhere from +35c to -20c

Why all the stress by driving fast on public roads? I love to drive fast on circuits, done it with gokarts and once with a Radical. Radical ended trashed and I walked away in one piece. However when driving to Lidl or ICA to buy food or going home after work I drive slow and relaxing. But what are people trying to achieve by driving fast on public roads?
@extracoolboy
@extracoolboy 4 года назад
Perhaps more fluid flow of traffic. I drive same route to work 20km, and most drivers drive 10-15km above speed limit, which is 70 on this type of B road. And traffic asi really smoth and well paced. But when there is one or more cars that drive at or below speed limit that causes a nuisance for everyone, because now all the other drivers have to overtake you, and some don't like to do so, so they stay behind and, it slows all the traffic down and causes potencialy dangerous situations. I don't mean that you should not respect the speed limit, but there is unwritten rule that you should adapt to the traffic, so if every other car does 10 above, perhaps you should too. Now there are "other" drivers that do 100-150+ on a B roads, but that is completely different level.

@MarekDrives 4 года назад
Outside of large cities expect a charger every 100-150 km along the main routes. There is no other way to verify if it is working/occupied rather than hope for the PlugShare crowd. Your best bet is greenwaypolska.pl/en/ Pricey, but reliable. Most of their DC chargers are 50 kW, some are 30-something. Free chargers are either occupied or out of order. I think there are several 100 kW chargers somewhere in south-western Poland, but that's probably of little interest to you :)

I found all the negatives you mentioned not negatives at all... I have driven the Kona for six months... It is the best car I have ever driven. It doesn't have too many buttons (you've never flown an aircraft). It is far less noisy than than a vehicle with a gasoline engine. I could go on, but I disagree with you on the supposed negatives.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 4 года назад
The best YOU have every driven. And that's fine. You have every right to like this car. However my job is not to like every car, because then my reviews would look like this: "This is the Hyundai Kona. It's a great car. Join me next week for another great car." I have the privilege of driving around a 100 new cars every year, so I may have a somewhat broader spectrum for comparison.

e-Niro and Kona electric share the same motor and battery size, but the battery packs come from two different suppliers, Kia gets them from SK Innovation and Hyundai gets them from LG Chem, which one is better, I don't know but Hyundai seems to be better in terms of economy, or let us say "efficiency"...

Forget about the max speed just do whatever speed you can do. Most reviews are done at night when there's no traffic but you'd hardly drive in non peak traffic, realy you'd want to drive in stop start traffic and see how well it lasts.
