On optimal track and weather, 1000 km/621 mi or more should be possible. The car was stock. No modifications done. The only thing was that I increased tire pressure from 2.5 bar to 2.9 bar.

Bjørn Nyland I think you could have gotten much more than 800 if had been drafting behind another car. Although i doubt if aerodynamics are relevant at 40km/h
@bjornnyland

Aerodynamics are still relevant at 40 km/h. But drafting is considered cheating IMO.

I think hypermiling should be done without external help. So no drafting, towing, etc.

I literally live in a small city/town with so much traffic, so much start stop traffic and always wanted to know what’s the actual real life range in town, at town speeds. Hate watching 120kmph, 0-100kmph tests and all that. Who’s actually doing this stuff in real life. Bjørn, you legend. Must have been so hard to do a video like this but it’s really really needed for whom it may concern, we’re niche but we are here. So with my 50km MAX per day WITH ac, I could EASILY get a week without charging. Thank you so much Bjørn, you’re invaluable to the community

Thanks for doing this, Bjørn. Other than the lack of stop signs, this emulates my typical driving quite well. My average daily drive is about 200-250 Kms and my average speed is somewhere around 30 Km/h. Without any DC charging in my area, this makes the Kona EV very attractive - even if I lost 50% of range during the winter.

With a smooth track, no curves, good weather and on autopilot, i agree, 1000km should be possible. For those who don't know, Model 3 is more efficient on "Autopilot", then on manual drive, 1001km Hypermile did show that. I expect the same from Kona.

Our Viking Ninja Turtle ❤️ such a great effort! For everyone watching that missed the stream: we calculated the real distance being 5,15% greater than what the trip meter shows. So he actually drove 872,75km but since there is no actual proof for it to show the camera Bjørn sticks to saying 830km.
@Allride_

Matthias Stumpp I don't think he saved 115 meters a lap. So I guess the truth is somewhere in between
@Allride_
@Allride_ 6 лет назад
Matthias Stumpp as realistic is some error due to an increased tire circumference.
@awo1fman
@awo1fman 6 лет назад
Matthias Stumpp Also not correct. Bjørn drove more of a "racing line" through the corners to minimise friction and was outside the centerline, so that optimised line wasn't necessarily shorter.

Great summary of that 24 h hypermiling race against the battery. :-) Yet I can't go without a little bit of backseating. ;-) At 1:37 it clearly shows that the A/C was turned off (LED not lit, A/C grayed out on screen) while connected to the charger. So it was blasting the car full power with moist air from the rainy outside instead of drying it using the A/C compressor. That moist then fogged the windscreen, when driving cooled it further down. For the driving itself it is most efficient to direct the airflow at the windscreen (by pushing the second button from the left in the bottom row) using the second lowest ventilation setting (right dial), which just lets headwind into the car. If it still fogs, you still don't need A/C. A small amount of heat from the drive train (left dial) is enough to keep it clear. Same goes for getting rid of sun heat: Left dial all the way to left and you only get fresh outside air. It won't cool down the car unless you push the AUTO or A/C button. The additional energy consumption of all these measures is zero. Energy-intensive air-conditioning is only needed if you have to cool down the car to lower temperatures than on the outside. You can get much more range in general (not only for hypermiling) by keeping A/C off and use ventilation/heating only. I don't know if a Tesla can do manual climate, but a conventional EV (like this car) surely can.
@SripalTAD
@SripalTAD 6 лет назад
If there is option to circulate outside air with blower only in Kona then we can do it. It helps a bit
@W0lfenstein3D
@W0lfenstein3D 6 лет назад
There is an app for rooted Android called Battery Charge Limit. You can set the percentage where your phone will stop charging and where it will resume. This way you can leave it plugged it but it will not overheat because it has a cooling period between charges (80 - 20%).

I love this kind of thing, I hope you add these results to your range test spreadsheet even as a different tab. Range tests at 90km/h aren't that useful for drivers who spend most of the time on city roads It also highlights how bad the range estimates are. At 6:50 it estimates 448km left when really it was 780.5km. Even doing a simple calculation of (49.5/6)*94 gives 775.5km remaining which would have been an underestimate of 5km/0.6% which is more than acceptable. I wonder if any manufacturers will use this method for range calculation The record distance in a Kona was 1026km/637.5miles (at speeds of 29-31km/h on a test track) so your prediction was very close

I want to ask you about how do you unplug the car after you attempt to start it while plugged? I had two occurences where I couldn't pull out the charging cable from the car because it was locked. First time I was on a public 22 kW DC charger, and I noticed that I had to keep pressing the the unlock button on my keyfob for 5 seconds, until the car would have a green flash around the charger, but at home on AC, I even unplugged from the wall and it didn't unlocked the car port. Eventually the car let go of the plug, but I want to know how to deal with these situations that aren't very well detailed in the owner's manual. Thank you

I would take it on a straight road at set speed of 100Km/h for a good distance to get a more accurate GPS speed reading and better idea of the variation, because the odo runs off the speedo and If the speedo is reading 10% over, then so is the odo, meaning not 830k but closer to 750.

@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 6 лет назад
Yes, I did. And Eco+ mode is great. It allowed the speed to drop by 4-5 km/h up the hill. And after the hill, it went 2-3 km/h past the set speed limit.

@stefanwagener 6 лет назад
Oh, wow, that's a cool feature. Could you already experience if that works with longer hills as well, let's say 2 or 5m elevation gain over a distance of 100m or so, I mean for normal up and downs on Norwegian roads? Actually the cruise control of the Tesla is rather brutal and inefficient in keeping the set speed when it is hilly.

My guess is that the increased tyre pressures increased your rolling circumference slightly so, if the odometer is accurate at standard pressures, you will have gone further than the indicated 830km. Given that the car is effectively running with taller gearing it would account for your apparently higher consumption because your real speed will have been >40km/hr. I guess this is true of your tests on the S so perhaps it balances out in the comparison. However, the wet track must have an effect. Water is 1000 times denser than air and has a significantly higher viscosity and you have been shifting water with the tyres for some reasonable fraction of the test. Such is the fun of doing field experiments! Of course, there is also the small matter of defining the distance travelled. Given that the front axle travels around all the turns at a larger radius than the rear axle the total distance travelled by the front tyres is greater than that travelled by the rear tyres. Which do you pick 8-)=

As he mentioned that 42km/h shown on display were real 38km/h, the increased pressure didn't even compensate for that. And typically odometers show higher values anyhow. In best case the gap between measured and real got more narrow, but unlikely he drove more than shown. Let's say instead of showing 2% more with normal tire pressure the value with higher tire pressure got reduced to 1% more compared to the real value. But unlikely it was less. As it is a new car the tire wear is probably still very low, otherwise worn tires would increase the difference between measured and shown even more.

Yes, very good points. All this does make comparisons between different cars liable to error. While odometers seem to be fairly accurate speedos as you say can be quite significantly off so perhaps a calibrated "5th wheel" or a DGPS tracking is required to make comparisons fair. As it stands the car with the biggest speedo over-read will be at an advantage. At the very least a check for what the speedo actually reads when doing 40kph on a straight road as determined by a GPS with the tyres at the pressure used on the track would eliminate some of the issues. One point I should have mentioned is the possible effect of the rain drops on the aerodynamics of the car. As you probably know high-performance sailplanes can suffer quite significant loss of performance from rain and perhaps this is a factor here (though obviously minimised by the low speed). Similarly, the aero may well be optimised for straight ahead and be less effective at slight angles to the airflow as in all the corners - shades of the recent Williams F1 problems 8-)=

its electric car we need to focus more on battery. kona has LG battery LG has been making lithium ion battery for long time and has world best technology and now samsung is rising with graphene battery. electric battery is also very quiet. newly made japanese submarine is using samsung lithium ion battery for their engine

I love the way range in electric vehicles is perfectly inversely proportional to the driving speed. He did 800km while driving at 40km/h. That translates to the EPA rating of the car of 400km while driving at 80km/h. Edit -> In ICE vehicles halving your speed doesn't double your efficiency/range.

Bjørn, wouldn't be easier to "rent" a garage with rolling stands and put the car in cruise-control on a rolling stand? that way, it's always stopped and only runs on the rolls ... no turns, no bumps, no anything :) ...just an idea... (rolling stand: those that help us know how much HP we have in our car, and used to test the breaks when we go to inspection, or portable as cheap as 848DKK www.ajengros.dk/shop/wheel-dolly-1394p.html )

+balexandre That would be cheating since we don't have wind resistance.

@@bjornnyland how's that different from a 38Km/h with no wind day?... at least all cars would have the exact same conditions and not change by weather/humidity/road conditions, as you said, here in Denmark the number would be somehow different :)
