It’s a little worse again because after you carry out the repair yourself, you still have to call apple for them to pair the component to your device, and if this fails once then they tell you to go to the apple store anyways. Which completely defeats the whole process of shipping tools. It is clear that apple is building a case to make right to repair look pointless in the eyes of certain law makers

Yeah this is literally just embrace-extend-exterminate applied to user's rights (AKA property rights). They are doing it on purpose to force people who want to repair their devices to rely on them only without the possibility of just using a third party, and to force them to pay exorbitant prices for the purpose of discouraging the repair in the first place. It reminds of the old washing machine paradox - you can get it repaired, but the repair tech always tells you it's going to cost more than just buying a new one.

It's basically malicious compliance with any proposed right to repair. Yeah, you can buy what you need from Apple, but it won't be any cheaper or more convenient than bring the device to the Apple Store and letting them do it. Then, when nobody uses this "service", they will go back to governments with data "proving" that there isn't actually any demand for right to repair.

As a former Genius Bar member I can tell you that those 5 components available for the Self Repair Program are the same components that the Apple Store can replace, anything outside of that is a Whole Unit Replacement.

It's so that _when_ right to repair regulation gets passed they can say "Well we already let our customers repair their own shit, see?" Though I will say I'm impressed by the quality of the tools in the kits. They're probably the exact same tools being used by their own techs and it's obvious that they (or their contractors) put serious design effort into them.

Apple only did this as a “okay if we do it, will you shut up about it,” move. Pretty much the bare minimum possible, to get government entities off their back and not brand them anti right-to-repair. There isn’t any reason then, to go this route compared to going to the Apple store and getting it fixed there. Yet by making the whole process as unappealing as possible, Apple can deflect criticisms, while at the same time increasing their margins.

Yes and they have HUGE margins! with every part they probably make 400% profit, those Oled panels are probably $3 from the factory but they charge you massive amounts! Rather get the Samsung repair program, it is super cheap and they don’t worry about making any margin on their products, basically selling at cost!

Yeah. Apple does things their way. What I thought about this program when I first seen it and heard the details was that NOBODY REPAIRS THEIR PHONE AT HOME BY THEMSELVES. I am a tech guy who builds computes and I don't repair my own phones when I break them. People want to go to 3rd party repair shops and get them repaired, but Apple has hand over fist fought 3rd party repair shops to keep that income flowing towards Apple. They sue anyone who wants to purchase parts themselves from the factory, they have contracts to not allow anyone to buy their components from the factory, and they partnered with Amazon to remove all 3rd party refurbishing companies off Amazon, so you have no choice but to buy from Apple even refurbished. And now this program is just them trying to disarm 3rd party repair shops by having an alibi when they get brought before congress and various consumer protection agencies. NOBODY REPAIRS AT HOME, THEY AREN"T AFRAID OF LOSING MONEY TO PEOPLE REPAIRING AT HOME, THEY ARE AFRAID OF LOSING MONEY TO 3RD PARTY REPAIR SHOPS. FUCK APPLE.

Having done Apples self repair I know the pain. After replacing the part you have to call Apple and get approval for your completed repair by letting them run system configuration, this removes the warning messages and artificial issues that arise after repair. This propriety software allows the parts to function correctly, In-turn making all 3rd party repair look bad and Apples offical repair be the only one that leaves you with a fully working phone.

@@reydgukthewjw8349 Including a completely custom ROM if you're willing to take the steps necessary to unlock the bootloader, add in a hacked kernel, and root your phone. In most instances there's software that'll do it all for you, and some of them can even be undone so you can officially update your phone to the newest OS, or restore it to factory. The only thing you really have to worry about is the phone's primary interface software like Samsung, or Motorola.

you dot have-to call them but if you do not call them then the phone cant download the calibration info for the new screen. This program is very minimal effort they did not bother to build a consumer facing tool to do this so when you call them the person on the other end types in the numbers you give them that assigns a new colour profile to your device (based on the screens calibration that happened in the factory) and your device downloads that from the web.

Having formerly worked at an AASP, seeing everyone on RU-vid explore these tools that I'd suffered with for several months of my life takes me back. iPhone 11 and older, you literally toss it into a little apparatus with suction cups on either side and rip it apart with no heat. The iPhones before the 12 were so much easier to take apart. The Heated Display Press is awful, and if a screen is too damaged it often is impossible to use the "correct" method to remove the panel. They have what are basically screen protectors with really strong adhesive to put over the cracked glass for the suction cup to grab onto, but the heat melts the adhesive on those, and you end up just pulling the cover off and the panel would just stay in place. I could change the display on an iPhone 11 in as fast as like 5 minutes, iPhone 12 always took at least like 30-60, with most of it spent trying to get the display off.

Honestly this should be seen as a middle finger to the EU. The wording of the law was something along the lines of "reasonable avenues for the consumer to repair their own device." I'd say charging more for parts than a phone is worth and requiring all kinds of specially made tooling that was only developed to make repairs difficult to begin with is nowhere near "reasonable". It's time to levy REAL fines against these companies. Forget these $5-7 million fines Apple just ignores. They need to get backhanded with a $50 BILLION fine before they even think of changing anything. I'm tired of companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft being allowed to just ignore laws.

I used to replace broken screens all the time for my friends. 9/10 times, a "broken screen" meant the LCD display was totally fine, it was just the digitizer that was smashed. The fact is this is not really Malicious Compliance its minimal effort Compliance. The company apple is using for this is the same company that sources parts for apple stores and authorised repair stores. And the prices are identical to what that company charge authorised repair stores. And if you were to take apple to court on this they could easily show that a screen costs this much when you consider R&D, licensing, factory time, yields etc. And apple have said that in-store repairs are a loss leader for apple retail so they will have legal documents proving that it costs them more to do a repair than they make from the repair. (I expect what is happening here is apple retail is also paying the exact same price for these parts and that does not even take into account rental of the shops that apple is retail is paying). proving in court that this is Malicious would be very hard since it really is not it is just 0 effort. It looks like apple sent an email to the company that already supplies them and told them to start selling parts to the public and that is it.

Honestly, as much as I am anti-Apple, I have to give them some credit where it's due. That screen remover thing will make screen removal SO much easier, especially in situations where the screen is significantly cracked, which is most screen replacements. The pricing is still bullshit, but it's so much more convenient than pry tools and heat guns.

@@hishnash I don't doubt that a surface level litmus test of their compliance efforts would fly above the legal definitions for malicious compliance. However, it would seem to be that "minimal effort" would have been Apple either doing nothing or allowing the parts manufacturers to sell parts on the open market. This is definitely more than doing nothing. Two massive flight cases, complicated methodologies, user examinations, and implementation of additional systems of control sort of more. I don't think these choices were "minimal effort" at all. Not to mention that Apple continues to develop and produce, via their extensive R&D budget, devices that are nearly impossible to repair and concurrent systems to prevent "non-authorized" repairs.

I do totally agree with your point "tech support would never give us an estimate, and we had the feeli g it was mostly done so apple store can suggest alternative options". I worked for Apple Italy tech support over the phone (1 year ago, things changed a bit for sure but the concept remains the same). Although we had estimates of prices for repairs, we were encouraged not disclosing them with customers. You also have to consider, over the phone tech support is mostly handled by bpo services, ie you are not directly employed by Apple, rather by a company that is employed by Apple. We wouldn't get many explanations on why, just a simple "that's the procedure". Long story short, an apple store and tech support have completely different scope of supports, and that's one reason why we were strongly suggested not to disclose prices (but we could have without failing, if we also mentioned they were pure estimates and prices may vary) . Another one is quite simple: AVOID ANY TYPE OF CONTRAST. customer do get quite aggressive and overall feel entitled (especially with apple, amazon...) at the phone. We had no way of proving anything without looking at a device, especially considering warranty and other legal issues. Then why put yourself in a position where arguments might arise?! Let our "colleagues" at the store handle it (same way we were handling apple Id, pwds, backups and those bullshit for them).

When you think about it...the Apple Store IS the "small repair hustler" now, since they're the only ones with access to unlimited "original" parts to perform repairs. The whole point of this IMO is to make the Apple Store repair SEEM a lot better in comparison, convincing people to opt for it. There's a whole psychological study behind this too I think, that when you present a pointless much worse option, something else looks much better or smth along those lines.

Except there is extensive evidence that the "geniuses" at the "genius bar" give completely wrong diagnostics and will over-charge you for the simplest of repairs. There was a CBC news segment featuring Louis Rossmann where they had a macbook whose display connector had a single bent pin. The "expensive" fix: replace the connector (75-150$), the cheap fix: unbend the pin with a pair of tweezers (0$). The Apple Store's diagnostic: you need to replace the entire display unit, case and motherboard (1200+$). There is obviously a tremendous conflict of interest when the company selling you the product and the company repairing the product are the same entity... they don't have to be dishonest but they consistently are and WILL push you through devious designs towards buying a new product rather than fixing your broken one. That is not something we had with small repair hustlers.

coming from an Apple authorized service provider. The customer has the option to wait over night for the part (if supplies are good, and of course GSX doesnt tell you stock) Or us as the provider can order the part as a "stocking part" which actually cost us more then what Apple charges for the repair! which in turn makes our prices higher to cover labor cost and part cost (Apple will pay you but its not even enough to cover their "minimum wage thing of $17.36) Now there is an option called Apple consignment part inventory which does! give you about 3 parts on hand at all time and when used Apple will send you a replacement part however, the cost associated with this is not much better then just stocking the part. Or in many cases is way more hassle on the techs end that will ultimately result in the shop losing money on the overall repair. There is a way to be very efficient about it to where we do come out $4.55 ahead but its slim pickens. Working for Apple for 5+ years has drained me quite significantly

Very good video on the program, however a quick note is that the iPhone 5s was the first phone with a paired touch ID sensor, although you could swap it over. The iPhone 8 was the first with a paired display and changing it would remove the true tone function from the phone. Batteries came a year later with a replacement not having the battery health. iPads don't seem to have paired displays though, so replacing them would not remove true tone.

On all the occasions I have returned an iPhone to Apple for repair (even under warranty) there has always been a service charge of $100 plus and we've never actually gotten the iPhone we entered the store with returned. It's always ended up being a replacement which is why they recommend you do a full backup of your iPhone before bringing it in. The only repairs we've had done are screen repair and battery replacement. And if it's a laptop they will almost always say that it's a liquid issue in order to void the warranty even if water (liquid) has never been spilled on the unit. But of course there is no way you can prove this if anything inside the computer has turned green which can be caused by operational humidity within the laptop which is actually more related to design flaws in the cooling and venting within the laptop than user mishandling. And then there is the proximity of higher voltage to low voltage within the laptop which is often less than a millimeter apart. Again due to design flaws that have been reported to Apple but which they do not correct from one model to the next.

I work as a Samsung technician and it shocks me what apple thinks is necessary to fix a screen or replace a battery. All I need to do a whole phone refurbishment (replace the screen, battery and some of the internal components) is a torqued screwdriver a hot plate a small plastic prying tool and a suction cup. It takes me 30 minutes with paperwork included to do the whole phone from first placing my hands on it to giving it back to the customer. Ofc we have tools that make it much easier like an automatic opener where you just place the phone in it and after 5 min of heating up pops out an open phone. But you don't need a press for the battery, elbow grease works just fine. Their glue is already REALLY STRONG!

The glue is literally there to make repairs impossible. And even Huawei and Xiaomi have a sort of pulltab. Just Samsung spitting in everyone's soup.

@@LermaBean I'm an independent repair tech and you're right that the batteries can be really annoying. I usually just let it soak in isopropyl alcohol for 5 minutes, leave it on a heating pad and come back to it, most of the time it will just fall right out at that point. I've had one Samsung battery blow up on me as I was being careless and rushing prying it up, lets just say I don't rush batteries anymore lol. (In case you're curious I've never had the isopropyl or the heat damage OLED displays, although the the iso can get between the layers on Apple's LCDs and create bubbles).

So here is how I could see this working for smaller repair shops (as I worked for a "unauthorized" chain)... Because my old repair shop relied on ifixit kits and Chinese screens... It would make the workflow on the repair end much more streamlined having official tools on hand. Not to mention that trade in or resale devices could be repaird using official parts instead of 3rd party on hand components (as no customer turn around time) ..

I am thankful I live in Australia where we have pretty good consumer rights laws. Everytime I have walked into an Apple store here even if the device is out of warranty, ever single time Apple has repaired or replaced the device free of charge. I have also never been upsold or tried to be persuaded to purchase a new device.

Etc etc. My point is that if the corner store messes up your phone, well yeah that's a bummer but it's not really a big deal. If that sketchy mechanic you took your Tesla to because he was "half price" messes up your car. Well, it's not even remotely the same thing. It's like when a person hires someone "cheaper" to work on the electrical in their house then it catches fire. My point is having people who are not certified to be working on cutting edge vehicles trying to fix your car is incredibly stupid. This is not a Toyota Corolla. I work in a manufacturing company that makes wire harnesses and there, ordering parts is as easy as going online and finding the part number the customer wanted. Yes, wire contacts and terminals require compatible tooling from the part manufacturer, but never have I needed to call someone to “activate a battery” or make sure my part serial number matches the one I ordered. The fight for right to repair will not be over until there is a parts catalog on Apple’s website which I can peruse.

@@PvtAnonymous As a devil's advocate who worked on repairing phones for at least a year before these tools came out, there is 1 that might seem useful. The heated screen press is a joke, and the battery roller is honestly an insult to anyone with functioning appendages, but the adhesive/display press might actually be useful. I've had to do several repairs where another shop didn't apply sufficient force to the adhesive/display, and had it come apart a few weeks later. As for the rest of it, absolutely worthless. Cracked screens and bent frames make the heater useless, and the concept of needing an entire jig to press down a battery is just insulting. (but you honestly don't need any of those tools, the one just makes it easier for inexperienced people to not make that mistake).

If it were to be the case, we'd already have spare parts sold at cheaper prices from China, but Apple has them on choke-hold contracts forbidding them from selling parts to anyone other than them. There's a reason why tech youtubers like Louis Rossman have to use spare parts from other defective units rather than brand new ones. He literally tried to call a manufacturer and offered to pay them directly for replacement parts and they straight up categorically refused. I expect it'll be the same with the tool kits.

The problem is, though, price of components compare to price apple charge in total in their own shops.

Made it to the end of the video. Here's my take. As an ex-Applecare phone supprot tech, they most definitely can offer you a quote on the phone. If you opt for a mail-in repair (which is annoying anywhere outside the US), you tell them what the damage is, and they tell you what it costs to replace it. If it shows up at the repair depot and there's more damage than you described, they call you back with a re-quote. If you get a re-quote, it will 100% of the time be more than the price of a new phone. Honestly, electronic waste practises at Apple's scale should be considered eco-terrorism.

Apple SOP is to take a device with blown out SM cap that probably costs $0.02, shred the $500 of working parts on the board, and call it 'green'. They conveniently miss the first 2 R's: reduce (make repairable) and reuse (post schematics) so they can flout 'recycling'. You might be able to get 20% yields on reclaimed metals/elements. 5 broken laptops into 4 working units is 80%. If its a common part your replacing 1 of say 500 surface mount parts. Thats 99.8% yields. Even if its a one off IC, your looking at 1 of lets say 100. Thats 99% yields.

Apple's devices aren't easy to repair so I was confused how their geniuses could repair them (assuming that recruiting repair techs is harder than other retail staff), given that Apple doesn't design for repair. Doing a one off repair yourself if you include your time is always going to cost more than paying someone you is doing 10 of these at the same time and has years of experience doing them. Someone with experience doing these repairs can likely replace a screen in 5 minutes per screen. The only way this would be cheaper to do yourself if you include your time in the cost is if apple payed to do the repair and gave you the parts for free. For most people effete if the parts are free it would still be cheaper to go to someone doing lots of repairs.

Anyone with (but not limited to) technician or mechanic in their job title needs to get paid if I’m not mistaken. I can’t even think of a possible way repair work provided by the OEM could work without not only a revenue stream but one that included profit as well. Even in your utopia where we used unpaid slave labor there is still equipment and material cost. Probably best to compare self repair programs like Apples to others like Samsung and Google. What are they doing that is better? Maybe I’m missing something but I can’t find any sort of program at all. I can’t even find OEM parts you can buy direct at any price. They don’t offer repair tools either. It’s strange you feel not having a right to repair at all is better than one you feel is overpriced. To each their own I guess. Good luck with the bias though.

I work at a Geek Squad as an Apple Pro and my gosh let me tell you, Apple is VERY specific when it comes to things. For instance I saw you wrote the name of the part on their box. When we ship them back they have to be inside of the new parts box going back. If there is any writing on the box at all or any marks, they charge us a $50 administration fee, its wicked stupid. I can't tell you the amount of escalations I have created fighting Apple to get money back that they wrongly charged us. I am hoping Apple wont do the same stupid stuff for this personal repair program. Imagine you don't get any of that returned part credit back and instead get charged more because you wrote on the box.

Maybe one thing for the apple store that refused to tell prices over the phone: Yes it is company policy and not the best. I worked at an apple store a few years back. Our apple store decided to tell customers prices via the phone. After 3 months the amount of calls we got just to check again for pricing or argue with the telephone guy that other services are cheaper got so high, that we needed an additional person there for a while just to handle more calls. People got angry when the price was actually higher when they came, because there was more repair to do then it could be diagnosed via the telephone. My colleagues got stressed by it. everybody got stressed. The store decided that we stop doing that collectively and told people to call apple care. They usually give out prices via phone and are especially trained to handle phone support requests. Apple store people usually are not. And I can confirm the tools shown in the video are the same as they are used in the genius bar repair rooms. There is just one more thing. Of course. And yes, I too would love apple to open up and give all the party to everybody. I am a big fan of self repairs.

Since I've read several "as a former..." comments I'll add mine. As a former Apple systems engineer for a Apple Specialist, Apple did once "toy" with devices that were entirely user repairable. The first couple models of the iMac G5 were designed to be entirely "consumer replaceable". However they did it to start to funnel owners to their New (for the time) Apple Stores. See if a part was considered consumer replaceable by Apple, than the Apple Specialist chain didn't receive any compensation for doing the repairs (in or out of warranty). But the Apple store didn't make money that way (most of the Apple store's budgets came from corporate marketing money, at least at that time) so it's not a loss to them to do 10 repairs with no "compensation". The concept failed, it's believed, due to push back from bother the Specialist chain, and end users, not everyone had a conveniently located Apple store, if they didn't feel comfortable replacing the logic board in their new iMac G5. Which were a LOT of folks since that same model line was known for bad capacitors blowing up in the PSU and on the logic board, eventually leading to REP for those parts. So the next redesign began the slow slide into super hard to take apart devices. I guess if Apple Specialists (or Value added resellers) wanted to be compensated for the repairs they did, Apple was going to make sure they really work for it. But I've slipped into story time lol. Sorry.🤷‍♂

It is kinda funny because Apple clearly never wanted to do it but because they were forced to do it by government pressure from the US and EU ,they had to do it,and they decided to find the best way to make it as hard as possible so customers would not do self repair , it was kinda a middle finger to the governments .

The iFix it microwave bag is genious hahahha. I have a Gel bag to put in the microwave or in the freezer, but it’s for personal use. I once used it to remove the screen of a Xiaomi Mi9 and it worked like a charm. I put the bag inside the microwave for 3m and then placed the bag on top of the xiaomi for 2m. I felt proud of myself for that idea hahahaha

I really wish companies would have better after-service offerings that lets people bring in their devices to the store, fix it within a short period of time the same day, and not charge a ridiculous amount of money. More people would use such service. I know in South Korea they have stuff like that for Samsung product owners (phones, computers, home appliances, etc).

Well, I mean... The answer lies in your comment, then :) The companies that you are looking for is, indeed, Samsung. I would not be surprised if they have great aftersales service in their home country. Even here in Indonesia, they have good aftersales service. Even some Chinese companies like Lenovo, Xiaomi, and ASUS had great aftersales service...... I mean, at this point... Apple is just being a jerk. These anti-consumer practices are something that I observe prevalent in US companies. Not only Apple, but also Dell and HP. I would like to be proven wrong tho, because I'm all in for great aftersales service and consumer rights. Cheers from Indonesia, m8! :D

That is the whole point though they do not want you to fix stuff at all, they very much would prefer you buy a new unit immediately but they can't come out and say it like that so they make repairs needlessly expensive to begin with and obstruct third party repair shops from competing with hostile design features and software locks. Corporations operate on the principle of endless greed so they need to be regulated after they reach a certain size or they will invariably create AND abuse their monopoly power over the products or services they offer.

I worked in a small phone repair shop back in the iphone 5(s) days. Most shops around here advertised same day, or even same hour repairs (for iphones and the popular samsungs, otherwise you'll have to be very lucky for them to have parts on hand). We definitely need to demand better from companies, or at least push them so that repair shops like this can work as well as they did

@@rakaalcuzaadnankadar6719 well, in my country it's the opposite. Samsung aftersales services are terrible because it is operated by third party companies. Meanwhile Apple is operated by apple themselves, so they ironically provide better aftersales service compared to most companies out there. For example, my S10+ had small dust underneath the screen (literally from the factory). So they suggested to repair the device instead of replacing it 1 to 1, the issue I had is 1. My water resistance would be compromised 2. Who knows what other issues it would have occurred in the future because of a botched repair And that's exactly what happened, after repairing the device, the screen bezels were scratched under the glass, and only then they were willing to replace it. Overall it took 3 - 4 weeks to get everything settled. Meanwhile, my iPad Pro had a tiny display bleed after 10 months of use. I went to the apple store and they immediately replaced the device without asking much. Your experience may vary from country to country tho, Apple services might be good in my area but it could be terrible in other countries. Same with Samsung

9:40 they are allowed to give the estimates over the phone from that page as long as they let you know it's an estimate. They just can't tell you turnaround time. If someone on the phone doesn't give you an estimate, that's because they weren't doing their job. That being said, the estimates are crap. It's basically a screen repair estimate, a battery estimate, and "other" which is basically replace the whole phone estimate. Computers, on the other hand, they don't give estimates over the phone.

Apple Customer Support is a joke honestly. Linus' story is actually believable after having to deal with them a few times. The first 3 guys you talk to have no actual understanding of the device or how any of it works and once you reach someone who knows, they'll just hang up on you because they don't see it being a problem at all.

I did want to go ahead and add a little bit more information, especially as one of those repair techs in the back, The sad thing about even fixing your screen with that repair program, You still will encounter things like face ID not working and if you're using a fingerprint reader touch ID not working either, for an experienced technician, a standard iPhone repair can take up to 30 minutes. It gets pushed to an hour because of all the additional paperwork and calibration software that's needed to just get those basic features working. That aren't even crucial to the phone security because you can literally move the fingerprint reader from one phone to the other and it'll still work like nothing happened, face ID will always be locked unless you go through Apple internally. Unfortunately if you want to unavoid this nightmare just get insurance on your phone, regardless of how technical savvy you are or how much experience you have. If you don't have the Apple clearance and don't want to pay a grip for tools that we don't even use that much, Just get the insurance.

That's exactly what I expected. Apple doesn't want you to disgrace the sanctity of their iPhones by letting you put your grubby mitts on any of the internal parts. It's always been that way, and it's always going to be that way. I just wish Android would step up their game and start having reasonable incremental updates and higher standards for developers.

I was wondering why Apple seemed to suddenly go all-in on this. It's all just a ruze. Putting themselves in a better position if right to repair gains more traction. Governments will be ignorant enough to fall for it too. I can't blame them for that, cause you can't know everything, but I can blame them for not listening to experts. I'm not surprised Apple wants to make money off this. But I am surprised they seem to have done it. They've figured out how. I will never in my life buy, own or recommend anything Apple. Yes, other companies have problems too and of course they're also after your money, but Apple really seems like the worst offender, especially with all their brain-washing.

Apple is like Sauron, but Samsung & Co. are really just a bunch of Sarumans. They follow Apple on all these shitty margin-increasing decisions down to the T. It is now impossible to own a high-tech product that doesn't bone you in one way or another as a consumer. The only somewhat more sensible options with respect to rights to repair are unfortunately significantly inferior in terms of design and features. Ideally, what we would need to do as a consumer force is boycott them and send our money to the shittier products/smaller companies in the hope that they improve and do not evolve to become tech-dictators like Apple... but that'll never happen because most people simply do not know or care enough about this issue to commit to such a sacrifice. Our wallets are our voting rights, and we consistently vote for entities which do not care about consumer rights, just like we consistently vote for politicians who do not care about citizen's rights. Oh well...

Now that you mention it, I genuinely don't know who I'd want to buy from if I need a new phone. Currently have a Galaxy A50 and sure enough, if anything on that breaks I'm boned. And it's a decent mid-range phone, right? Not that old, not exactly cheap. But it can't play 2 720p YT videos without overheating (at least I think that's what causes the buffering, not entirely sure). So downgrading would hurt. I actually might end up not getting a smartphone. Texts, calls and music. Wonder if there are still phones that just have that. And a physical bloody keyboard... But nobody else is gonna do that, you're right. Hell, I say it now, but might just end up following the herd anyway. Companies have figured out that we're *all* easy targets. I think we're just fucked...

This is not all of a sudden there are key changes to iPhone 12 that made this possible to do so it will have been in them works for at least 4 years. Pre iPhone 12 to load configuration info (like colour calibration of a screen/Camara) you needed to physically connect the phone to a Mac running some debug tools but from iPhone 12 onwards these devices can now do this over wifi pulling the info from apples servers. I don't think apple is really making any big money from this program at all, screen prices are high charing $30 more than a knock off eBay screen is not exactly making the $$$ profit margins you might expect.

I remember every phone had a wrist strap and I never dropped one of those. I think I’ve seen one Sony smartphone with one in the last 10 yrs. my solution. If a phone company cannot mitigate against dropping with a simple strap then all repairs for the life of the phone should be free.
