Growing up, plus-size model Olivia Campbell was bullied at school and sexually assaulted due to her body. With the same raw strength that she used to face her mom and step-mom's battles with cancer, Olivia is turning fat into a term of empowerment.

Isabella Arden She's a breathe of sunshine. Not just her personality. Her soul is beautiful. The body she has is just the physical vehicle to be in. Doesn't really matter what that looks like. It is the soul of the being. Not the body.
@nicolee2154
@nicolee2154 7 лет назад
Kathryn Martinez I agree, outer beauty is nowhere as important as inner beauty. But in this context, I feel a bit confused as to why you guys would keep saying this over and over. Because there is a girl who is truly beautiful in mind AND body and who has suffered a great deal with body shaming.... and yet noone can bring themselves to say that she looks gorgeous? (a statement that would probably be very affirming and uplifting to someone with her story) I feel as though a lot of times, bigger people (and especially women) get compliments on practically everything EXCEPT their bodies, as if peole were afraid to make a comment on them at all.... things like "You have such a beautiful smile" or "Your face is so sweet" or "I really like your style." And those are lovely compliments, but I really feel as though people tell skinny girls "You're beautiful." and tell chubby or fat girls "Your face is beautiful." Guess what though? The rest of us is beautiful as well.

One time I was talking to this chick and, in the course of our conversation, I referred to myself as "fat." She said, "oh, honey, don't say that, you're beautiful!" to which I replied, "I didn't say I was ugly, I said I was fat." I've never seen a more explicit revelation of the hidden prejudices we have about size. I mean, talk about connotation, amiright? Hear "fat," think "ugly." Interesting, no?

to other two comments: buuuulllssshhhiiiiitttttt. you just don't want to face the truth. the truth that there is, as op said, hidden prejudice of size. there are still many people who think fat = ugly. bish no. and y'all comments are only perpetuating the idea whilst hiding behind "nice" excuses.

The fact that these random strangers had the audacity to tell a twelve year old girl that she was a "fat, ugly, b%*^h" is not only uncalled for but sickening! Then the racism that she had to internalize and deal with at the tender age of six until even now, makes my heart sorrowful. I read a lot of the reviews that people wrote but unfortunately they completely lacked substance. Also, I applaud any woman who realizes the detrimental backlash that could occur by exposing a child to numerous personal adult relationships. My aunt exposed every man she had ever dated to her 3 young daughters. Consequently, one of them ended up raping my cousins and since he was a cop no charges were filed. I am not saying cops are rapists, I am simply saying that as women we cannot expose every man that comes into our lives to our children.

I hate how everybody calls fat people curvy. There are fat curvy people and thin curvy people, is has to do with your breast/waist/hips/booty ratio, not with the amount of body mass. It is also bad, when fat people say, they are better than thin ones, because the thin people have no curves. Its bad to take other people down, ony that you feel better, no matter in which way.

+anqilala I totally agree with you, you took the words right out of my mouth! I never understood the idea of "dressing up" the word fat by replacing it with "curvy". Like, really? I'm stick-skinny but my hips are notably wider than my waist, so I would call myself somewhat curvy as well. It really isn't about body mass, the problem is that people always make the word fat synonymous with ugly... it really is just a descriptive word, and if people truly think others are beautiful regardless of size, they wouldn't view the word fat as a negative one. Anyway idk why I'm rambling for so long but yeah, I agree with you completely!

I would love for that to be true, but it simply isn't. Science proves that there are certain features that we men find attractive in women, and being slim or at healthy weight ranks high on the list. She clearly doesn't satisfy that criteria, and you can bet that most men will not find her particularly attractive in present condition.

I've always thought that childhood trauma causes one of two results; the victim either becomes abusive, angry, and toxic themselves, or they become extra empathetic, compassionate and perceptive. Ms. Campbell inhabits the second result beautifully. This was truly a pleasure to watch, and I myself consider the word "fat" to be completely judgement-neutral as well. It's just a descriptor; if it makes you gasp or cringe when I use it to describe myself, you are the one who holds a negative view of people who are larger. Thanks, Olivia. You are amazing.

You know what. I lived my later childhood and teen years (9-17), I thought, "I'll get down to this size, I'll look like all the other girls" however, it wasn't until I was like 18 or 19 that I realized... I'm 5'11'', broad shouldered/hips, as some people have said, "She's built like a tank." There ARE different bone structures. But that doesn't mean you can't be healthy or maintain a healthy weight for YOUR body type. I gain muscle super easily, so I lost 80 pounds and did that (not like...weird buff lady hahaha) and I still wasn't fully happy...........I lost 80 pounds, had great muscle definition, I could walk into any typical fashion store and wear anything I wanted--and I was still 30 pounds heavier than the average size woman. I was pretty much an athlete. 36 km bike rides a day, hours and hours of trail walking a week, hiking, sports, I had stamina people would kill for......but it wasn't until I accepted my body type that I stopped beating on myself for not looking exactly like the women in magazines. I can't tell you how often people would stop me in the street or at the mall and say, "Are you a model?" or ask to take a picture of me........but I wasn't happy with that--because I still picked on myself the way everyone picked on me when I was over weight. I'm not a small girl--but I can choose to be HEALTHY for my stature. Losing weight won't make me shorter, or my shoulders smaller. But, it will keep me healthy to be a healthy weight, and that's what I've learned to care about. If I need to run, I can. If I do a workout, I can, easily... This woman in this video is beautiful. But most importantly, it's her life. If she chooses to live her life any certain way--fuck off and don't judge her.
