This was a great video for me learning all of the terms, cylinder pressure, block, head gaskets,JD pro seals, the dyno itself. I really get a good appreciation for all of you mechanics and subie Nation people out there. We have a great car community and im 3 years in. Im excited about the new FA motors coming in the next WRX and STI. Stay safe brother 🙏..
Makes me regret selling my STi for an EVO. Granted my wife bought a blob eye last June so I still get the rumble. Awesome car man, can't wait till i can start building to this degree. Ordering an 18K for my EVO tomorrow. 3 snapped bolts on the downpipe mating flange. Gonna replace my cracked manifold too.
This car looks and sounds epic. When going for big power with subarus is there always going to be issues with head gaskets. Is it just really limited to subarus or do alot of other cars suffer with it aswell
Are you gonna end up ditching the 6466 for something like a 6870? That will be well in its efficiency for your 800 power goal I think. Either way, sweet freaking car man
Everybody’s a critic haha, but from what I’ve seen most MLS gaskets perform the same. How bout some larger head studs and/or more torque on them? Not sure if you’re running 1/2” or 14mm, might worry about ripping the treads right out the block though
Everyone has an opinion lol, I usually dont post these things and now im trying to be more transparent which helps others, although in return it will gain some hate unfortunately. With it being outfront we use 1/2" headstuds and a custom torque spec, tbh its just too much cylinder pressure for that MLS gasket to hold without some sort of a combustion fire ring.
Awesome video Josh! Been following you when we started our Subie shop in Canada. Ive made 700whp on ~31lbs & 850whp on 38lbs on stock MLS gaskets and ca625s and a borg S369SXE, being the builder and tuner myself I had control of everything. My timing was around 22-23* at RL car runs M1 with out issue for 2 seasons. Do you think the combo or extremely high boost and being out of the efficancy of that turbo may have lead to detonation? And which gasket were you using when it lifted? I just switched to the Athena fire ring for my 2.5 and the Athena fire loc on my sleeved 2.35LR and havent flexed em yet just curious
I trusted my tuner and they said to use the je mls and they also told me the outfront v3 is plenty and now they’re telling me to use a 340 fuel pump when I wanted to use a 450 and at this point I’m super upset to have taken any of their advice. Sadly I won’t be making over 700whp any time soon because of that.
The header has absolutely zero effect on headgaskets. High boost is what causes them to fail, especially on a motor built for this kind of power. Closed deck block/iron sleeves + stronger head studs with a better gasket are what you need to prevent lifting a head.
Like mentioned it has a perrin v1 equal length header on it, i could see where your thought might be on that since having a standard UEL header would cause un equal pressure in the cylinder, thus possibly causing more cylinder pressure. You may be correct if we were trying to get this greedy with boost and had a OEM header / UEL header on the car im sure we would see some loss in the power / power band and have back pressure issues. Being its a 6466 it obviously has some built up back pressure at this boost level where we are pushing it out of its efficiency level. The block is closed deck / 1/2" Headstuds with a custom torque spec. The issue was just surpassing the expectation of a part. The Athena gasket that was swapped into the car is much stronger and will help address the issue we are having. Although the downfall to them is if anything were to happen such as a misfire or lean occurrence it will cause severe damage to the block or head because your (fuse) the head gasket isnt gonna let go. So its gonna force that pressure to release somewhere if needed. Hopefully this response helps cover it and understand it more.
_BaderBuilt that makes a lot of since, but I do gotta say the build is sick. Keep it going man. I wish I could get a series gray I seen it at the Detroit auto show.
Do you recommend je pro seal? I thought I found the right one for an fa20dit and I got it from outfront. I plan on being between 500whp and 600hp with port injection. Any help with head gaskets would be awesome
@@BaderBuiltRacing ok thank you so you so much for the Information! I will definitely never make 800 or 40 pounds of boost. Well not till I build an sti. Love the cars bro I hope to get there someday
Thank you sir, Its always been known as a low reading dyno. Hyper blue has made the same 713whp on this dyno and trapped 840whp. In the end just a tool to help tune the car and the track trap speeds will tell all for power.
Keeping my wrx close to stock, let you guys the misfortune of exploding your cars. I cannot afford to build and blow motors just to find out what works.
@Cornfed Scarecrow have fa20, and not building it. Stage 1 or 2 cobb and exhaust basically. I can't afford to get 500 hp from this. Plus I only hsve 1500 hundred miles on it.
@@remissiveslave I have a full bolt on fa20, 82,905 on the motor, been modded like that since 10k. Daily drive it. Motor just popped. If it's a subaru, itll go at some point.
I tell customers 700whp / 36lbs (dynojet) is end of reliability in a subaru, after that this is considered maintenance. I am working closely with outfront to come up with a better solution though. If i had the athena gaskets on in first place it would of held, but i wasnt planning on going this far so i figured we would be just fine with the standard JE's
No i mean 52lbs is what the car is on, im saying that a 6466 makes 800whp on 40lbs and to better off explain low reading dyno. At this same power i trapped 880whp in hyperblue.
@@FROSTXCLIPS That's clearly not what he was saying. He didn't say buy a 15 STI, he said buy a 15+ STI. I just want to know why he recommends buying a 15+ over the older years.
Your whole issue for flow is that baby ass turbo go up to 7076 make way more with half the boost your gonna blow it up with that’s small ass turbo it can’t breath that’s why numbers won’t gain like it should bet u run it at 35psi makes the same power on the turbo u have now 7076 or go home😂
I’m at 448 whp on a baseline break in tune from a built titanium bottom end, full bolt on, bigger injectors and fuel pump. Stock turbo too. Blew my first motor with just bolt ons and my build now is the result of that. Will be going bigger turbo after I put about 2500 miles on the new motor.
Not a Subaru guy at all....one thing I have noticed is all of them that are modified make that "flutter" sound under load. Why is that? No other four cylinder turbo cars do that, let alone any other type of build in general....
@@antondyatlenko5547 strange. I've certainly heard them before in person. Must be something with the way the recording devices pick it up on Subaru's in specific. It makes sense why but you can even hear it in the exhaust when he's showing the dyno video from behind the car, which if the wastegate is dumping to atmosphere in front of the car, even that's a bit strange. Anyway, thanks for the explanation.
@@MeltingRubberZ28 it's an external wastegate in conjunction with an electronic boost controller. As the ebcs is fluctuating the valve to modulate the boost it makes the wastegate flutter so that's what you're hearing is the ewg valve fluttering
@@MeltingRubberZ28 on the graph you'll usually see the boost have a wave look to it around a .5psi difference either direction but usually it holds it stabler than that
1/2” headstuds lol, gasket was the issue because it can’t handle the cylinder pressure. I gave the proper information while you’re giving the wrong information.
@@BaderBuiltRacing so why have a video asking what headgasket to use ? Which U do ...LoL. measure ya bolts/holes depth and undercutsru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x5FRusEY87k.html
I’m not asking which headgasket should I run, I’m telling which one should be run. I one a car that makes more power than 99.99999% of Subaru owners. Car doesn’t have a headgasket issue, think I’ll go with what I’ve tried and true method, vs science of what should work lol.
I mean i had a good time, dont matter to me. Car was fixed with part it should of had in first place if i wanted to go that far with boost level. One of those deals where once i get on the dyno i just max shit out lol
Fair enough brother. I just can't phathom doing this to my own car. But you clearly enjoy all parts of this game, kudos for having the will to pull heads for content
